Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Republicans cannot even be trusted with their own money.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires.

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

Petty moves from a petty man.

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

Not loving this new fraud based economy.

After dobbs, women are no longer free.

Republicans don’t lie to be believed, they lie to be repeated.

Not all heroes wear capes.

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

Finding joy where we can, and muddling through where we can’t.

Celebrate the fucking wins.

If you thought you’d already seen people saying the stupidest things possible on the internet, prepare yourselves.

Sadly, media malpractice has become standard practice.

Do we throw up our hands or do we roll up our sleeves? (hint, door #2)

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

We will not go quietly into the night; we will not vanish without a fight.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

Those who are easily outraged are easily manipulated.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

Someone should tell Republicans that violence is the last refuge of the incompetent, or possibly the first.

Don’t know but Greece’s defense sucks.

Greece is going to get destroyed.

Let’s give a prize to the person who guesses correctly on the timing of Greece’s first red card. I say the 36th minute.

    1-0 Nigeria

Someone needs to tell the Greek goalie his job is to get in the way of the ball.

Stupid card for Kaita. Stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid.

Let’s see if having a man advantage for roughly 55 minutes of the match allows Greece to look slightly competent for a change.

Wow, I was right about the Red Card and just 3 minutes off (33rd min) – but I got the wrong team.

If Greece can’t score now, can Nigeria get a Red in the box, next?

Good Lord. But I’ll be impressed if Greece can score even with a man-up advantage.

Nigeria going for the degree of difficulty win.

It’s been awhile since I’ve seen someone do something that stupid with his team up and in control of the game.

This game is a contest between ineptitude (Greece) and stupidity (Nigeria). Right now, stupidity is winning, but not content with a clear advantage over ineptitude the first 30 minutes, stupidity handicapped itself with a red card for the sort of behavior you more typically see in a Boy’s U15 competitive game, not a World Cup side.

Neither team has a ghost’s chance to get past the first knockout round if either gets so blind lucky to get there.

@Randinho: Ouch, yes it was; probably would’ve been fine if he’d just kept his foot down. Nigeria really needs to hunker down here at the end of the half.

Watched this match in my neighborhood cafe in Astoria, Queens, so with its predominant Greek population you can imagine the pandemonium when the home team scored (!??!) and won the game. (As I write this, the car horns are blaring around the streets.)

Before the start of the World Cup, my knowledgeable Greek football friends had hoped simply for one goal in any of the group stage matches. They ruefully dismissed the possibility of an actual victory as beyond the skills of their aged squad. Ah, now the ouzo will be spilling well into the night.

For this neutral observer, Greece’s play after they took the lead was maddeningly incomprehensible. (Of course, one might claim that even before they led.) With a man advantage, a Nigeria squad likely exhausted and perhaps demoralized, and the need for a third goal to match So. Korea’s total, there was a complete lack of urgency. Happy to pass the ball between defenders, then back to the keeper who lumped it upfield to the midfielders who would wait there until the frappes were served. Samaras’ selfish touchline strike into the side netting from an impossible angle in stoppage time epitomized the Greek effort.

One may need to turn to the classical Greek tragedians (“The Eumenides,” say) to find a adequate representation of what awaits this team against Argentina.

    @NobodySpecial:

    Not really.

Argentina is through unless they lose by three goals to Greece AND South Korea beats Nigeria.

South Korea is through in most scenarios as long as they don’t lose to Nigeria and Argentina doesn’t lose to Greece.

@handsmile: I’m a former Astoria resident (28th Street between 23rd and 24th Avenues) and can only imagine what it must have been like.

While I doubt if it would happen, could you imagine your neighborhood in a game between Brazil and Greece, given the significant Brazilian population there now?

@Calouste: Right now South Korea and Greece have minus 1 goal differentials. Nigeria has minus 2. If Nigeria beats South Korea by 2 to 0 and Argentina beats Greece by any score, Nigeria goes through. If Nigeria beats South Korea by 1 and Argentina beats Greece by 2, then Nigeria goes through. In the first scenario Nigeria goes through purely on goal differential and in the second on goal differential v Greece and on head-to-head competition against South Korea. Still lots of possibilities.
