John Amato noted that the DREAM Act will knock over a billion off of the deficit, and he urges his readers to get on the phone and make it happen. Good on him.
Here are some Senators who need to hear from you:
AK-Murkowski
KS-Brownback
LA-Landrieu
MA-Brown
ME-Collins
ME-Snowe
MO-McCaskill
NV-Ensign
NC-Hagan
ND-Conrad
ND-Dorgan
OH-VoinovichThe following senators have indicated that they will not vote for the DREAM Act, but are still being targeted:
AR-Pryor
FL-LeMieux
IL-Kirk
NH-Gregg
TX-Hutchison
Those of you whose Senators did not make the list should still pick up the phone and urge him or her to pass the tax cut plan as passed by the House.

Oops, after 5 on the East Coast. Pick up the phone and yell at someone first thing tomorrow. I’ll repost this as an open thread then.

Who does a person who lives in our Nation’s Capital call? We don’t have any Senators. I think this country would be better off if we had 2 for the record.
As an alternative approach, we have a higher population thay Wyoming, so maybe we could turn Wyoming back into a territory, because they’re just not big enough to be a State if we’re not, and take theirs away.

@MarkJ:
Since you don’t have any, perhaps you get to call any of them you like, since you’re their captive constituency.
Maude
@MarkJ:
I was thinking Kentucky would be a good trade.
DC in and Kentucky out.
Zifnab
@Maude: Kentucky at least has its moments. Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia… take your freak’n pick. Oh! Oh! Consider South Dakota. Maybe we can give it away to Canada. That would send those silly bastards into fits.
Bulworth
That can’t be right. The only thing that knocks anything off the deficit is more and more tax cuts and more defense spending.
Maude
@Zifnab:
Oops, forgot about Jack Daniels.
How ’bout Tennesee?
Can we shove AZ up to Canada?
Omnes Omnibus
@Maude: I enjoyed Memphis and Nashville when I was there. I preferred Memphis; my wife preferred Nashville

New Jersey is getting close with Christie playing Ronnie the Second.
We could push Texas into the Gulf.

This smacks of voter disenfranchisement.
Tune in next week when the Tea Party Nation says we should go back to only counting 3/5ths of all non-white people too.

@freelancer:
Well, that’s one word you could use.
On a semi-related note, why is it always “property owners” who are supposed to have such a vested interest in their communities? I could drive that yahoo by some pretty run-down houses in my community where it’s pretty obvious the owner isn’t “invested” in a damned thing.

@Zifnab:
The Dakotas are crawling with nukes; gotta keep ’em.
I call Utah.
Also, who gives a shit about the deficit when we’re talking:
a) Brown people
b) Gays
c) Gay brown people
d) War with Iran (filled with brown people)

@arguingwithsignposts:
Since “no taxation without representation” is a founding tenet, I’m down for only landowners pay taxes if they’re the only ones that vote.
sherifffruitfly
It helps brown folks. It therefore has exactly zero chance of getting passed.
I agree it’s fun to pretend otherwise, to make ourselves feel better, though. But I know what happened last election, and how white folks overwhelmingly voted.

Nobody answers the phone at Hutchison’s office. I have been trying to get through for several weeks. Just a PSA for Texans.

This may be off topic but I’ve got a quick question that I’m not sure where else to post. I thought there was a BJ post where John or DougJ or someone recounted a sort of “theory” of elections that they heard from a dude, that 90% of people had their minds made up and that it was the 10% of undecided voters, to busy to follow politics, who chose how to vote based on what candidate commercial they last saw, or which candidate’s face they liked, basically that those 10% of swing voters decided all elections. Can anyone remember where that post is or direct me to it? Thanks!

Immigration reform is so woefully needed, it’s absurd. The Dream Act is just a baby step, but still one that’s needed. One area I give kudos to Dubya was that he seemed genuinely in favor of immigration reform. Unfortunately, his party was only cynically pro immigration at best, and that cynical sentiment has been jettisoned by the populist redneck faction currently calling the shots, which never liked furriners, legal or not. Ironically, any GOP opposition to the Dream Act may be more than just dumb obstructionism. They genuinely feel The Mexican should get no breaks, no means for legal entry, no way, period. Don’t care if it would save eleventy trillion dollars. Or ameros, depending on the exchange rate.

@Maude:
I think we have the makings of a deal.
Winston Smith
Tomorrow is Saturday. I assume I should call Monday morning?
Tim F.
@Winston Smith: The Senate’s working on Saturday, so I assume that their offices are answering the phone. I guess that we’ll find out.
J.W. Hamner
Sigh, I liked it better when I could say “Of course my Senators are voting for it: I live in Massachusetts! ”
Should I call this weekend, or wait until Monday (if so you might want to post a reminder)?
EDIT: Whoops! I see that question has been asked!
tkogrumpy
The country is falling apart and I’m supposed to work for another tax giveaway to brown people.

@The Dangerman:
Make it so.
I live in Utah with a very sick GF and we can’t afford the treatment. So health care is a small price to pay for learning to use the word “eh” as punctuation. I also promise to also start watching hockey religiously if they’ll take us in.
