Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

They were going to turn on one another at some point. It was inevitable.

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

Marge, god is saying you’re stupid.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. keep building.

Republicans: slavery is when you own me. freedom is when I own you.

Lick the third rail, it tastes like chocolate!

Dear legacy media: you are not here to influence outcomes and policies you find desirable.

An almost top 10,000 blog!

The snowflake in chief appeared visibly frustrated when questioned by a reporter about egg prices.

“In this country American means white. everybody else has to hyphenate.”

Hi god, it’s us. Thanks a heap, you’re having a great week and it’s only Thursday!

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

There are no moderate republicans – only extremists and cowards.

Well, whatever it is, it’s better than being a Republican.

Oh FFS you might as well trust a 6-year-old with a flamethrower.

Finding joy where we can, and muddling through where we can’t.

I swear, each month of 2025 will have its own history degree.

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

Many life forms that would benefit from greater intelligence, sadly, do not have it.

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

Come on, man.

Giving in to doom is how authoritarians win.

Marvin Gaye, “What Do You Want With Him” (1962)
Here’s an early Marvin Gaye that really wowed me this week. Sometimes I think Motown is kind of overrated by us Boomer types but then a song like this comes along that I never really knew and I can see how good they were all the way back. Does anybody know the documentary Standing in the Shadows of Motown? Great stuff about the session players, like James Jamerson, that had so much to do with creating the label’s signature sound. There’s a Joan Osborne cover of “What Becomes of the Brokenhearted” that spooks me how good it is. I always liked Osborne, even “One of Us,” and that’s kind of a hard thing to admit. But then I feel vindicated when I see something like this (video since yanked, sorry about that, documentary definitely worth seeing!).

What’s been sounding good to you?

Meant to get to this a couple days ago but life has been intruding. Did I miss anything around here? This is a cover of the big Van Halen hit, but torqued in a different direction. What have you all been listening to this week? Also too, R.I.P. Dick Clark and Levon Helm.

Aztec Camera, “Jump” (1985)

P.S. Oh, DougJ is doing songs about rain. I’m going to check to see if anyone has mentioned the Neil Sedaka song, “Laughter in the Rain.”
