Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Petty moves from a petty man.

The fundamental promise of conservatism all over the world is a return to an idealized past that never existed.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

Oppose, oppose, oppose. do not congratulate. this is not business as usual.

One lie, alone, tears the fabric of reality.

Marge, god is saying you’re stupid.

We know you aren’t a Democrat but since you seem confused let me help you.

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

After dobbs, women are no longer free.

Compromise? There is no middle ground between a firefighter and an arsonist.

Not loving this new fraud based economy.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

“Until such time as the world ends, we will act as though it intends to spin on.”

There is no right way to do the wrong thing.

Bad people in a position to do bad things will do bad things because they are bad people. End of story.

He seems like a smart guy, but JFC, what a dick!

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

Find someone who loves you the way trump and maga love traitors.

Humiliatingly small and eclipsed by the derision of millions.

Celebrate the fucking wins.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

You cannot shame the shameless.

I mentioned how old Steve has gotten, but boy does he just love it out here:

Late Night Open Thread 30

He spent a couple hours in the chair like that, and basically lives out here now. He spends the night in the shed, spends the day out here and in the indoor/outdoor room, and pitches a fit if we try to bring him inside for the night. He spiritually has always been a barn cat- just the easiest cat I have ever owned.

Let’s get right into it, business like. If you have not already heard, Donald Trump just ask for 1.5 trillion with a fucking t and an r for the defense department in the new budget:

With the United States at war with Iran and embroiled in conflicts around the world, the White House said on Friday it would ask Congress to approve roughly $1.5 trillion for defense in the 2027 fiscal year. If enacted, that amount would set military spending at its highest level in modern history.

The request, which arrived on Friday as part of President Trump’s new budget, would amount to a roughly 40 percent bump from what the U.S. spent on the Pentagon this fiscal year. The administration said it would couple the proposed boost with a call for $73 billion in cuts across many domestic agencies, including the elimination of some climate, housing and education programs.

The White House released a summary of its budget request, with fuller details expected later. Together, the ideas may sum to a fiscal blueprint that could still add trillions of dollars to the brimming federal debt over the next decade, if lawmakers translate the president’s vision into law.

This is, of course, INFUCKINGSANE, and I would give it a 50/50 chance it will happen. Fetterman would vote for it. He also wants to re-open Alcatraz. I’m absolutely blaming this on Clint Eastwood.

As to what the military would need all that money for is, well, this kind of stupidity:

The U.S. military lost its first fighter jet to enemy fire from Iran on Friday, U.S. and Israeli officials said, a setback for the Trump administration, which has repeatedly sought to project that American warplanes had established air supremacy in the five-week war.

The jet, an F-15E Strike Eagle, was carrying a crew of two. U.S. military officials said they had ejected from the aircraft.

One of the two airmen was rescued, while the second crew member had not been accounted for as of Friday afternoon.

Separately, another Air Force combat plane, an A-10 Warthog, crashed in the Persian Gulf region on Friday, and the lone pilot was safely rescued, according to two U.S. officials who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss operational matters.

Awesome. And WHAT THE FUCK ARE THEY DOING WITH A-10’s? That is a ground support aircraft. Unless this was just a routine training accident at one stationed in “the persian gulf,” that could be ominous. Or maybe it was there to provide ground support for the rescue? I’m assuming the f-15E was in support of or part of some of our aerial war criming, which today consisted of blowing up a civilian bridge and then double tapping it to kill rescuers:

President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social about an airstrike that partially destroyed the tallest bridge in the Middle East hours after he threatened to bomb Iran “back to the Stone Age.”

“The biggest bridge in Iran comes tumbling down, never to be used again – Much more to follow! IT IS TIME FOR IRAN TO MAKE A DEAL BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE, AND THERE IS NOTHING LEFT OF WHAT STILL COULD BECOME A GREAT COUNTRY!” Trump said.

BTW- the Iranians are not backing down (as evidenced by them shooting down a plane and shooting at helicopters) and today blew up some more oil refineries and storage:

An air strike has hit a power and desalination plant in Kuwait.

And 12 people have been injured in the United Arab Emirates as missiles were intercepted causing debris to fall, authorities in both countries said.

Gulf nations continue to face retaliatory strikes on the 35th day of the war by the United States and Israel on Iran.

Kuwaiti authorities blamed Iran for the strike before midday on Friday. The plant was not identified and the extent of the damage isn’t known.

Following the attack, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) denied responsibility and shifted blame to Israel.

Israel’s “unconventional and illegitimate attack on Kuwait’s water desalination centres is a sign of the vileness and baseness of the Zionist occupiers,” the IRGC said in a statement posted on Telegram.

We are stuck in a deep escalation spiral and are being led by idiots who will have the worst imaginable response/reaction to anything that happens. And most of the time they probably are in such an information deficit because of the intense mindguarding and the fact military staff keeps getting dumber and dumber through racist purges and a job placement situation based on conformity and sycophancy:

The New York Times reported that military officials attribute Hegseth’s decision to fire Gen. Randy George from the position of Army chief of staff comes amid clashes between the two men over personal grievances and personnel disputes. Particularly, military sources indicate that George and his ally, Army Secretary Daniel Driscoll, disagreed with Hegseth’s decision to block promotions of four officers — two Black men and two women — to the rank of one-star general. George and Driscoll felt that Hegseth was using race and gender to single out these four officers, who were part of a list of over 30 officers, mostly white men, who were up for promotion. George and Driscoll refused pressure from Hegseth to remove the four promotion candidates, maintaining that their outstanding service records merited the elevation in rank. Hegseth, in turn, refused a request by George to meet and discuss the issue.

Irving Janus would write whole ass series about this administration.

In other news, this really pissed me off:

East 65th Street, in one of New York City’s wealthiest ZIP codes, offers a bounty of goods for its residents to enjoy.

There’s the $34 double cheeseburger with thick-cut bacon at the popular local restaurant the East Pole, the $2,250 leather shoulder bag lined in lambskin at the Versace outpost on Madison Avenue and a $28 million four-bedroom condo with private elevator available in the Giorgio Armani Residences a block from Central Park.

And, this fall, a new child care center for 3- and 4-year-olds will open down the street with space for about 130 local children, a development recently announced with much fanfare by Mayor Zohran Mamdani. The charge: free for all.

There is perhaps no street in New York City where the promise and peril of Mr. Mamdani’s vow to expand the social safety net for all New Yorkers is on starker display than this stretch of the Upper East Side.

Why is this so fucking hard? yes, free child care and preschool for everyone means fucking everyone. If you means test things then it just become something for the poors and then it becomes something crappy for the poors and then we shit on the poors some more and then we decide fuck the poors they don’t need that shit anyway and tax cut Jeebus says the creators need a tax cut. Public goods are for the public, all of them. What’s next, ARE THE RICH GONNA WANT TO USE THE PUBLIC SIDEWALKS, TOO????

At any rate, we want this because we want well adjusted kids who someone took the time to teach how to hold a pen or pencil or learn to interact with others of all races and creeds so they can go to kindergarten and elementary school prepared to learn and think and grow up to be good people. That’s why we want it, and we want it for everyone.

As a childless adult I am so sick and tired of caring more about other people’s kids than they do about them. Until very recently I was single and paid more than married people and I would have paid more if I knew it was going to go to shit like parks and playgrounds and preschool and public transportation and community gardens and shit like that. We keep saying we are the richest country in the world but we never act like it.

Honestly, we act like new money white trash- gaudy fucking

I am about to have a late dinner with Joelle, but I did have one last piece of news. I have asked longtime commenter Sister Golden Bear to join the front page. I have told all the front pagers and I am telling you all- we will have a heavy hand with any transphobia. Dialog is great, and SGB is a much kinder and more patient person than I am, and will be able to discern the difference between well meaning questions and responses using unfortunate wording or the accidental use of antitrans rhetoric, but we all can see clear trolling and bile. And I won’t tolerate any of it. I am not going to let our good intentions about free speech be used against us. This is not becoming the nazi bar, if you know what I mean.

Having said all that, I really don’t expect many problems because I know you all can be good people. So let’s everyone welcome Sister Golden Bear.

Neither one of us felt like cooking so we are having Indian takeout tonight. I’m excited because I love Indian, love not doing dishes, and will not have this as an option in a month or so when I head back to West Virginia. Speaking of West Virginia:

The Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help in locating a woman wanted in connection with a reported burglary.

Authorities say Anna Marie Groves is accused of entering a chicken coop that was being used as a residence. Officials say she entered the structure with the intent to cause physical harm to another person.

During the incident, the occupant of the residence stabbed Groves with a knife.

Groves is now wanted on a charge of burglary.

I am convinced the only reason it is Florida man is the sunshine laws and the major media markets otherwise it by all rights should be WV Man or Kentucky Man.

***

Shout out to his makeup and hair team because Trump is speaking tonight after being pissed off all day attending oral arguments at the Supreme Court and not liking what he heard, so I am sure tonight is going to be a fucking hoot. I have absolutely no idea what he is going to say, and I doubt he does either, that’s gonna depend on his cocktail of uppers and downers to get just the right mix for the big show and the last person he talks to on stage. The only thing I can state with any confidence is that everything he says tonight will either be dangerous, insane, an outright lie, or some combination of all three, but Wall Street will convince itself it is good news and the market will rally tomorrow.

And, of course, the media will sane-wash it and do the “well maybe he kinda has a point in a way” like they do with everything when he definitely does not have a point in any way, shape, or form. Like that’s how we got where we are with birthright citizenship. He says something insane or outright racist, the media sane washes it, and then the federalist society and all the billionaire funded think tanks and Ayn Rand cranks and corporate stooges in the economics departments and mba programs will start churning out opinions and studies and thinkpieces and it will go like that until some prominent centrist or left-center legal figure with elite lawyer brain will say “Well I suppose you could argue” on CNN and here the fuck we are.

Meanwhile the 20% or so of sane people in this country watch all of this and just go “WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON HAS EVERYONE GONE MAD AND LOST THE PLOT?” Maybe it is higher than 20% but it sure feels a lot smaller.

Apparently a deal was reached to fund TSA:

Just days after labeling the Senate deal to end the record-breaking shutdown at the Department of Homeland Security a “crap sandwich,” House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., appears ready to swallow it whole.

Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., announced Wednesday they will move forward with the two-track approach senators unanimously backed last Friday. They will pass a bill to fund most of DHS, with the exception of Immigration and Customs Enforcement and parts of Customs and Border Patrol, and then look to approve money for ICE and CBP in a separate reconciliation package.

That sounds like Democrats held the line and didn’t cave but the Republicans refused to compromise about things like making ICE unmask or follow the law, so now the Republicans are going to try to fund it in sketchy ways. I haven’t read enough Bluesky today to figure out how the Democrats suck for this, so that is my take on things now.

***

I just had my dinner and this curry and garlic naan were so good that I am dangerously close to being in a good mood. Fortunately, Trump is going to speak in a few minutes:

I might have thoughts afterwards.

***

The final thing I wanted to approach was that we blasted some men to the moon today (don’t get excited for the wrong reasons- it wasn’t musk, thiel, andreesen, and zuckerberg, but actual astronauts, so we want to bring them back), and it was quite exciting from the clips I saw. I am not sure what the actual mission is but simply providing four astronauts with the time of their lives is a better use of the money than ICE or a War in Iran, so I support it. Regardless, they always cram so many experiments and things to do on the shuttle launches and stuff that I am sure we will learn a lot from it. Just the act of doing it will generate data and information that will be useful in the future, let alone what we collect and learn while doing it.

Did take me back to that day in high school when the Challenger exploded in front of everyone I knew. That’s a memory marker like the Miracle on Ice or the Iranian hostages or Reagan getting shot or Princess Di dying. Funny how those things just stick with so many of us.

Alright, it’s about time to listen to the village idiot.

So the big story of the day is HELL YEAH GET YOUR TITS OUT (link to the NY Post but honestly this story is why tabloids exist):

These are the photos that allegedly show Kristi Noem’s husband Bryon wearing comically oversized, lopsided breasts – complete with fake protruding nipples – to female members of an online fetish community.

The Daily Mail obtained “hundreds” of messages purportedly sent between the former Secretary of Homeland Security’s husband and three women who are involved in the so-called “bimbofication” fetish scene.

The kinky community involves people injecting their busts with freakishly large amounts of saline in pursuit of a “Barbie-doll”-like appearance.

The pictures show the South Dakota insurance mogul, who has three children with Noem, clad in pink hotpants and a skin-tight, flesh-colored crop-top stuffed with enormous balloons made to resemble massive cockeyed breasts.

The thing I hate most about this story (other than the image of him with a giant set of fake tits and hot pink hotpants which I will never forget) is that it’s a very fine line between making fun of the blatant hypocrisy of these fucking guys while not kink-shaming or marginalizing other people who enjoy this kind of thing and have never hurt anyone and aren’t trying to make life hell for every single lgbtq+ person in the country. Having said that, fuck the Noem’s and I hope they are all humiliated.

You know, if this is your thing, and your wife is ok with the life you lead, and you’re ok with her having open dalliances with others, and you can still make it work and everyone is happy and no laws are being broke, do whatever the fuck you want. But to be a major part of the attempt to ruin everyone else’s life because they don’t live up to this fictitious lifestyle you pretend to adhere to where the men are strong and the women are dumb and obedient because a couple thousand years ago some people wrote a book? Get fucked. Noem signed every hateful piece of legislation that crossed her desk when she was Governor. Fuck both of them. And she knew.

According to Emptywheel, the fact this story is out there today is not a coincidence:

You should read the whole piece on Miller, including where it also describes Miller overriding the President’s orders to exclude farm workers from his raids. But you should definitely consider the implications of the Pretti stuff: it directly implicates Stephen Miller in the cold blooded killing of Alex Pretti.

Today, Daily Mail (archive link) has what appears to be a response: Boobies. Or more specifically, the boobies that Kristi Noem’s cross-dressing cuckold likes to wear. Go ahead and read that story, which is pitched as a description of the counterintelligence risk posed by hiding your cuckold’s kink.

It has funny pictures!

But as you try to understand why we’re only getting boobies at this point, after Noem has been fired, considered the possibility that we’re seeing a cutthroat game of vengeance, of the sort we’ve already seen Corey Lewandowski indulge during his battles with Roger Stone, one that comes amid reports that Lewandowski’s grift is finally under investigation.

Someone close to Kristi Noem tried, once before, to implicate Miller directly in two killings (and likely, in the Marimar Martinez shooting, as well as a number of assault cases charged against protestors who were themselves assaulted, who can now cite the Daily Mail in discovery requests). That got Noem fired.

In Saturday’s Daily Mail, someone is revisiting that, with more damning specifics.

Who knows. Or dare I say, it would be irresponsible to not speculate…

***

The market surged today because *reasons* and I for the life of me can not figure out what those idiots are up to other than thieving because they exist to operate in their own universe, but from what I have seen *nothing* has gotten better over there. In some good news, a judge blocked Trump’s east wing debacle, and Trump is reacting as you would think he would and might very well forget about Iran for a couple days.

In other news, the Supreme Court verdict on conversion therapy is not as dire as I was afraid it would be:

The Supreme Court did not strike down conversion therapy bans today.

Not nationwide. Not in Colorado. Not anywhere.

Here's what actually happened in Chiles v. Salazar—and why the coverage you're seeing serves the conservative legal movement more than it serves you.

Y’all should recognize that lady. She’s pretty smaht as they say up Levenson’s way.

I currently have carrots I seasoned with olive oil and herbs de provence (however you spell it) cooking on the grill, as well as some whole mushrooms I put olive oil and salt and pepper, and a small glass container of scalloped potatoes on the grill. Out here, we basically don’t use the oven for six to eight months of the year, so the nightly bird feed and grilling action is just the way you do things. Can’t heat up the damned kitchen with a 400 degree oven. When they are all done, we have a package of pre-seasoned beef tips I will cook up- they cook super quick.

I am beginning to think Joelle is having an affair with the meat counter guy because every time she goes to the grocery store she comes home with these ridiculously market down packages of meat. Beef strip steak for 7 dollars, or these beef tips for 6, and shit like that. Every single time. I mean it’s great and everything but I wish she had had an affair with the hvac and electrical people.

I gotta go check on the grill. Talk to you later.

This post is in: John Cole Presents "This Fucking Old House"

Had some weird weather last night- a quick burst of rain and lots of wind but it didn’t amount to much in the way of precipitation. It’s been hazy and humider than normal, too, and slightly overcast. Weird weather for here.

The NY Times has a cpac review (gift link), I’ll celebrate this when it happens for real:

Without it, people like Ms. Cassell felt that there was only one obvious conclusion to reach about the state of Mr. Trump’s conservative movement after this past week.

“I think that MAGA is dying,” she said. “I do.”

This just keeps getting stupider and Trumpier:

Ensuring safe passage for oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz is not one of the “core objectives” President Donald Trump has set for ending his military operation against Iran, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters on Monday, potentially setting the stage for Iran to continue to flex its strategic position over one of the world’s busiest oil shipping channels for the foreseeable future.

Leavitt was asked at a White House press briefing on Monday whether Trump was willing to declare victory in Iran and end the war even if Iran continued to block most vessels from passing through the strait. Leavitt said the U.S. and Israel began their military strikes in late February to destroy Iran’s navy, dismantle its missile and drone infrastructure, weaken its proxies in the region and prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.

We shot up all our cutting edge missiles, fucked up the economy, killed probably thousands, prolly gonna blow a couple hundred billion on this by the time it is over, and then we will retreat with our tails between our legs while Iran is now going to make a ton of money charging tolls through the Strait. All to get rid of weapons they didn’t have.

Meanwhile, Netanyahu is continuing the ultraviolence he loves so much:

The Israeli military has suspended a battalion of reservists from active duty in the occupied West Bank after soldiers there detained a team of CNN journalists and one of the soldiers said on camera that the troops were carrying out “revenge” against Palestinians.

A CNN cameraman was put in a chokehold and he and several colleagues were detained for about two hours, the network reported last week, as they documented the establishment of an illegal outpost of Israeli settlers in Tayasir, a Palestinian village northeast of Nablus.

During the journalists’ detention on Thursday, one of the soldiers was recorded on video saying that the entire West Bank was “for the Jews.” He said that the soldiers’ motivation was “revenge” for the killing of an Israeli teenager in a collision with a car driven by a Palestinian on March 21.

And they are bringing back execution by hanging, but just for the untermensch:

Israel’s Parliament passed a law on Monday that would allow the hanging of Palestinians convicted of deadly militant attacks, but experts say it almost certainly cannot be applied to Jewish extremists convicted of similar crimes.

The law is a victory for Israel’s far right and reflects the country’s shift to a harder line against Palestinians in the wake of the Hamas-led attack on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, and the Gaza war that followed. The death penalty has long been legal in Israel, but only two people have been executed in the country’s 78-year history.

The Knesset, Israel’s Parliament, passed the law after hours of debate on Monday night over the objections of Israeli justice officials, liberal rights groups and European countries like Britain and Germany.

Lovely. We are going to be paying the price for all of this in blood and treasure for generations. At least those crack sumbitches in the GOP have figured out a way to pay for all this bullshit:

Republicans are eyeing massive cuts to health care spending in order to scrounge up $200 billion for Donald Trump’s reckless war in Iran.

Top Republicans are looking for ways to offset the massive price tag the Pentagon has requested in order to pass the additional funding for U.S. military operations in Iran through a budget reconciliation bill, Axios reported Monday.

House Budget Committee Chairman Jodey Arrington is looking to revive cost-sharing reductions, programs that can assist low-income Americans in paying high deductibles, that were passed as part of Trump’s behemoth budget bill in July.

The Congressional Budget Office previously estimated that funding these reductions would save the federal government $30 billion but would increase out-of-pocket premium costs and drive up the number of people without health insurance by 300,000 through 2034. Arrington is selling the move as “fraud prevention.”

I just can’t with these fucking ghouls- I seriously need an overwhelming turnout on election day from everyone. Gutting health care after already gutting health care six months ago to pay for a war 2/3 of the country opposes and that we will most likely lose WHILE starting the great depression is the fucking distilled essence of the modern GOP.

***

I wonder if things are bad enough that this might stick:

On Monday morning, Washington had a state income tax on the books for the first time in nearly a century.

Now what?

A legal challenge certainly, maybe two. A ballot battle as well, its timing less certain.

Opponents of the much-debated 9.9% tax on households with incomes above $1 million a year are honing legal and electoral strategies to invalidate and repeal legislation that Gov. Bob Ferguson signed on March 23.

Their specific tactics will become public in the coming days. It’s unlikely any will surprise those engaged in the spirited discourse on the controversial “millionaires’ tax” since its emergence last fall.

Supporters will celebrate when Senate Bill 6346 becomes law. But don’t expect them to launch anything resembling a statewide victory tour. The tax will need to clear formidable hurdles before collections could actually begin in 2029, as planned.

It’s going to effect .5% of the state, but it’s the loudest and most .5% of the state, so we shall see.

***

I bought a dozen eggs a while back, probably a couple weeks, and we never used them so I just boiled them all and we are making egg salad sandwiches tonight, which I always adore. That’s it. That is my entire agenda.

To be honest, I am pooped. I have not been sleeping right (just not able to fall asleep) and staying up to 11 or 12, I have to wake up super early because I have to deal with work stuff in east coast time, and on top of it I am really pushing myself at the pool. Really starting to notice a massive increase in stamina, and really feeling a lot better. You’d think I would sleep better with all the exercise. Getting old sucks.

Be good.

Stupid is as stupid does:

President Trump is weighing a military operation to extract nearly 1,000 pounds of uranium from Iran, according to U.S. officials, a complex and risky mission that would likely put American forces inside the country for days or longer.

Trump hasn’t made a decision on whether to give the order, the officials said, adding that he is considering the danger to U.S. troops. But the president remains generally open to the idea, according to the officials, because it could help accomplish his central goal of preventing Iran from ever making a nuclear weapon.

The president has also encouraged his advisers to press Iran to agree to surrender the material as a condition for ending the war, according to a person familiar with Trump’s thinking. Trump has been clear in conversations with political allies that the Iranians can’t keep the material, and he has discussed seizing it by force if Iran won’t give it up at the negotiating table.

Yeah Iam sure he is thinking real hard about it- keeps him up at night, I bet. The motherfucker hasn’t read a briefing document yet- they give him two minute sizzle reels of things blowing up. But whatever. I don’t even know what this means:

The secretary of state, Marco Rubio, repeated on Friday that the US believes it will be able to achieve its goals without boots on the ground, but when marines are in position next week, Trump could order an assault to either provide leverage to reopen the strait of Hormuz or to degrade Iran’s ability to keep the waterway closed by force. The lack of heavy armoured units, logistical depth and other elements needed for a protracted military conflict will limit the White House’s ability to escalate the conflict, however, potentially extending a stalemate that could be devastating to the international economy.

The most prominent target has been Kharg Island, a coral outcrop of less than 9 sq miles, off Iran’s coast. The island is the site through which about 90% of Iran’s crude oil exports flow, making it a financial and logistical lifeline for Tehran, the loss of which could mark a significant blow to the regime. Trump has suggested an attack against Kharg Island as far back as the 1980s, when he told the Guardian he would “do a number on Kharg Island; I’d go in and take it” if Iran fired on US ships.

The US troops being deployed to the region are far fewer than those used in past major operations, including Iraq and Afghanistan. And an assault to take Kharg Island would mark a rare contested amphibious landing by US troops potentially under drone, rocket and artillery fire. US troops would take more than a day to sail into position near the island, giving Iran time to mine the area surrounding the island as well.

Hear me out- if the reason we need to take Kharg island is because the Iranian’s closed down the straight of Hormuz because all it takes is one boat with a rocket launcher or one lucky drone or one mine to close things down globally for quite some time, how is taking Kharg Island, a little blip on the WRONG side of said strait, going to help us in taking Iran’s oil. I am all fucking ears.

I think an increasing problem is that Pete Hegseth really seems to think a couple special operations and some rangers and the 82nd can handle all this stuff because what you have to understand is all of these guys think the military is accurately reflected in Call of Duty and Tyler Sheridan shows. It’s not. And after the four years of recriminations against those who said “that’s a bad idea,” four years of posturing and positioning and prostrating in front of Trump, and two years into severe loyalty purges and getting rid of anyone with a brain or a spine, we’ve a real mess. On top of that, the same thing has happened to our intelligence services, I fear.

Curious to see what happens with the market tomorrow. Gas here is 5 dollars a gallon and 6 for diesel. Just keeps on going up.

***

It’s humid here and I think we are going to get some rain and the birds were acting weird. Today I saw someone somewhere talking about pigeons being robots and that when they sit on lines they are recharging and the evidence for this was that “you never see baby pigeons,” which is another whole level of stupid. The reason you never see baby pigeons is because birds, when they hatch, are in a basically post larval state and stay exactly where they were born until they start fledging. So you are never going to see a baby pigeon unless you stumble upon a pigeon nest, which you most likely won’t unless you are a gargoyle attached to a building or some random place because we domesticated pigeons to the extent that they don’t really know how to build nests any more. Seriously go google some pictures it’s a hot mess they are about as good at building nests as I am at Olympic downhill. It’s sad.

At any rate, unless you are around baby ducks or chickens and other fowl like that, or put up hanging ferns and bird houses so the birds nest on your porch, that is why you never see baby birds. It’s just like everything on the internet these days- we have all these resources to learn and know shit, and you can always take the time to go outside and fucking observe it for yourself, but no, we prefer to be edgy and stupid. While I was grilling dinner I started to wonder just how much the average bird sleeps every day. I mean the whole “the early bird gets the worm” bit and none of them are at the feeders after dark, so just how much do they sleep.

At any rate, because we have the internet and because up until very recently we valued basic research because there was a general consensus that knowing things was generally a good thing, so I looked it up and let me tell you that is gonna be a whole afternoon I lose because the variations in sleep adaptations and patterns by birds is pretty fucking astounding. Look into it, it is pretty amazing.

I don’t have nothing else to say.
