Redistricting, Redux

by John Cole|  September 4, 20039:23 am| 9 Comments

This post is in: Politics

It looks like the game is over in Texas:

With the crucial defection of a leading Texas lawmaker, the defiant band of Democratic state senators holed up in New Mexico since July 28 has lost its ability to deny Gov. Rick Perry the quorum he needs to push through a hotly disputed Republican redistricting plan.

The surprising reappearance in Houston Tuesday night of a prize holdout, Senator John Whitmire, who, with 30 years in the State House and Senate is the dean of the Legislature, threw Texas politics into a new tizzy.

If Mr. Perry calls a highly unusual third special legislative session, as is widely expected, Mr. Whitmire, 54, known as Boogie from his avid partying in younger years, could be required to attend or be arrested and dragooned into the chamber.

Watch the left’s rhetoric reached a fevered pitch as they lose yet another political battle. Some people want to continue the fight, however:

In Santa Fe, N.M., Gov. Bill Richardson, who offered sanctuary to the Texans, cautioned the Republicans that their “big power grab” in Texas might impel him to put redistricting before New Mexico’s special legislative session in October. “I don’t want to use it as a threat,” Mr. Richardson said. “It’s just an option.”

Brace yourselves, because this one almost blew me out of my chair:

You Have to See It To Believe It

In what looks like a fatal outbreak of irony, Kevin Drum asks for civility from his commenters and a flame war breaks out.

FWIW- My comments rules are real simple- easy on the language and no racism or gay-bashing, but other than that, say what you want- it just reflects poorly on you when you turn into a bottom-dweller. I will, however, take anyone who tries to start “Democrats are Communists” and “Republicans are fascists” and the ensuing “Left wing dictators killed more people last century than right wing dictators did” debate and tie them to a stake, rub tuna on them, and let my cats have at them.

Cry Me A River

This post is in: General Stupidity

I am opposed to the death penalty, but I will reserve my doubts and opposition for a more sympathetic character than this homicidal madman:

Nine years after he calmly shot and killed an abortion doctor and his volunteer escort outside a Pensacola clinic, Paul Jennings Hill died by lethal injection here today as his supporters declared him a martyr and warned that his actions might be replicated.

Mr. Hill, a former Presbyterian minister, is the first killer of an abortion provider to be executed in the United States. He had not tried to prevent his death, which took place at Florida State Prison, just after 6 p.m. as lightning jagged across a nearly black sky. But abortion rights advocates fear what Mr. Hill’s followers have hinted for months: that his death will cause a new wave of violence against abortion clinics, many of which have operated in relative peace over the last few years.

Paul Jennings Hill was a homegrown domestic terrorist, and he will not be missed. And before you argue with me about whether he was a terrorist or not, remember what he and his followers advocated- the bombing and wholesale slaughter of people doing nothing more than living their lives in accordance with the laws of the land- all in the name of Mr. Hill’s religion.

Sound familiar? It should, because while Julian Bond is fond of making Taliban references when speaking about President Bush and Republicans, Paul Hill and his creepy gang of religious thugs and holy miscreants were the closest damn thing we had to a homegrown Taliban. This group of spiritual gangsters was the real deal, and Hill was their Mullah, urging them on their own fetishized jihad. Say hello to Carlos the Jackal and Abu Abbas, Mr. Hill.

MoDo- Mo Dumber Than Humanly Possible

This post is in: General Stupidity

Barring anything written on Indymedia or the Democratic Underground, this is officially the dumbest thing written this year by anyone:

The Bush foreign policy team always had contempt for Bill Clinton’s herky-jerky, improvised interventions around the world. When it took control, it promised a global stewardship purring with gravity, finesse and farsightedness.

But now the Bush “dream team” is making the impetuous Clinton look like Rommel.

Congrats, Maureen.

Jeebus, Oliver

This post is in: Democratic Stupidity

Speaking of absurd lefty rhetoric (I am beginning to remember why I did not blog the last few days), Oliver has some easy ‘solutions’ to America’s problems. They are all real beauties (it takes talent to start with a false premise and come to a hasty conclusion topped with an appeal to emotion, but it is there- find it for fun), but this one is just such a gem it deserves extra derision:

North Korea
Problem: The rhetoric towards North Korea is aggravating an already unstable nuclear entity.

Solution: Address the Korean problem directly. Don’t make it appear that we can be held hostage by nuclear threats, but appreciate the seriousness of what North Korea could do.

For starters, let’s work through the flaws:

1.) The false assumption that rhetoric means ANYTHING to these people. They understand how they use it, which is belligerently and to achieve an aim, usually while engaging in duplicitious behavior behind the scenes, but it is not mere rhetoric which drives their behavior. It is understanding that we are serious which has ‘aggravated’ them. Which is a good thing. Unless you would like to go sign some more treaties and- wait. That is silly point #2.

2.) We are a hostage to other nations with nuclear weapons- within limits. Regardless, we are coming off a policy in which we not only acknowledged we were hostage to such threats, but we went the extra mile and PAID THE RANSOM.

3.) Is there really anyone who does not take the North Korean threat seriuosly? Oh yeah, I forgot- ‘Dubya’ is ‘stupid’ and ‘reckless.’ Talk about cheap rhetoric.

There you have it- the Democrats have all the solutions to those pesky questions. They are going to ‘take North Korea seriously.’ Go read them all- but don’t try to drink anything while reading them. You’ll be cleaning your monitor.

*** Update ***

Oliver responded, and in fairness, he deserves to be heard:

For months now, people (like yourself, John) have attacked Dems for attacking Bush but not providing alternatives. Now that I’ve done that, I get hit. I don’t expect you to take my statements like you would a candidate’s policy statements, but still…

That is just the point- these are not solutions- they are stylistic approaches for how to go about implementing the solutions, but there is no substance. The how we should approach North Korea is there, but the what is missing. And this is what is maddening- Kerry, Dean- hell 90% of the Democrats are pissing and moaning about the idiot Bush and how he is a Cowby and how the Jews are running everything and that if only a Democrat were in office this would not be happening (because, perhaps, we would be paying them off, as I noted before), but in reality, the solutions are always some variation of ‘I would not do what Bush is doing and if I were I would be doing it better and with more finesse.’ And that, folks, is not a platform.- it is the equivalent of putting make-up on a pig.
