Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

You come for women, you’re gonna get your ass kicked.

The press swings at every pitch, we don’t have to.

The “burn-it-down” people are good with that until they become part of the kindling.

It’s a good piece. click on over. but then come back!!

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

Since we are repeating ourselves, let me just say fuck that.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

This fight is for everything.

“Facilitate” is an active verb, not a weasel word.

Every decision we make has lots of baggage with it, known or unknown.

“But what about the lurkers?”

The lights are all blinking red.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

Human rights are not a matter of opinion!

People really shouldn’t expect the government to help after they watched the GOP drown it in a bathtub.

Giving in to doom is how authoritarians win.

Attack Avoided

by John Cole|  March 30, 20042:32 pm| 16 Comments

This post is in: War on Terror aka GSAVE®

Some good news from the War on Terror:

An al Qaeda plot to blast London was dramatically foiled by police today.

Seven hundred police swooped in a series of 6am raids in the capital and the Home Counties. They found half a tonne of fertiliser explosives – enough for a series of terror “spectaculars”.

The terrorist suspects arrested by police are believed to have chosen “soft targets” for bombings including pubs and clubs. One of the suspects being held had a job at Gatwick Airport, immediately raising concerns over airlines and passengers.

A total of eight men – all of them British citizens of Pakistani descent, three of them teenagers – were arrested in the operation, with police from five forces searching a total of 24 addresses across London and the South-East.

I simply don’t how anyone can continue to argue that Iraq is not the centerpiece of the War on Terror. The Al Qaeda goals are clear- they are attempting to hit every ally in the region, because they are terrified of a democratic Iraq.

Condi Testifying

by John Cole|  March 30, 20042:25 pm| 12 Comments

This post is in: Politics

So I guess a deal was brokered and Condi will testify. Cool. I understood why she was not going to, but I am glad she now will be in front of the commission. I don’t think anyone is going to learn anything, I don’t think anything is going to be accomplished- in fact, I gave up on that last week during the hearings, but it will shut the Democrats up.

I think what happens next is that we all need to push to get Clinton to testify under oath. We all remember how much fun he is when he is under oath. Hell, he doesn’t even have a law license to lose or an office from which he can be impeached. Putting him under oath could be really entertaining- who knows what kind of outrageous lies he might bust out.

As far as Gore- well, who cares. Putting Gore under oath would only do one thing- prove to America how big the rift between Clinton and Gore really is, how out of the loop Gore was during the Clinton years (really- reinventing government was important), and what a bunch of nonsense it was that the Democrats peddled in 2000 about all the important experience Gore would bring to the Presidency.

Air America

So today is the debut of the new lefty network, and try as I might, I can’t find a streaming link anywhere. Anyone know what I have to do to listen in to this stuff?

*** Update ***

I am an idiot- the debut is tomorrow. Regardless, where do I go to find a streaming link. There was nothing on the ‘Air America’ website.

BTW- If you wanted to sell the liberal ideology, would you name your flagship network with a name that is going to do nothing but remind people of a bad Mel Gibson flick every time they tune in to listen?

They Learn

Say what you want about the terrorists, but they have learned from the Spanish reaction:

Uzbek Foreign Minister Sadyk Safayev said the attacks were aimed at breaking the U.S.-led anti-terror coalition.

“This has been committed by the hands of international terror,” Safayev said. “That’s the hallmark of the terrorist acts we have already witnessed abroad.

“Attempts are being made to split the international anti-terror coalition.”

Uzbekistan has been a strong supporter of the U.S..-led campaign in Afghanistan, providing a vital airbase for U.S. troops in military operations there following the September 11, 2001, attacks on America.

Weakness, whether real or perceived, will always be met with aggression. Always. Why is this so hard to understand? Despite the partisan maneuvering by Democrats in the 9/11 commission in conjunction with their new hero, Richard Clarke, this should be the real llesson learned from the Clinton administration. Weakness, whether real or perceived, will always be met with aaggression.

I wish people would go read Bernard Lewis. Christ, even a young Orson Scott Card understands human nature more than most of the world.

Caution- Foul Language Follows

by John Cole|  March 29, 200412:40 pm| 50 Comments

This post is in: Democratic Stupidity

I am cranky this morning, so I am about to unload a stream of obscenities:

“Josh Marshall- Shut the Fuck Up.”

Thank you- that was the only reaction I could muster to this piece from Josh:

How low will they go? Now Clarke’s a racist (from last night’s Crossfire …

ROBERT NOVAK: Congressman, do you believe, you’re a sophisticated guy, do you believe watching these hearings that Dick Clarke has a problem with this African-American woman Condoleezza Rice?

RAHM EMANUEL: Say that again?

ROBERT NOVAK: Do you believe that Dick Clarke has a problem with this African-American woman Condoleezza Rice?

RAHM EMANUEL: No, no. Bob, give me a break. No. No.

First- he did not say he was racist or sexist, he asked.

Second, is there anyone, and I mean anyone, who thinks that if the roles were reversed, that Now, the NAACP, and the chattering classes would have not already asked the question, but advanced the idea that ther man is completely and irreparably racist and sexist. Please- go look up face validity.

Third, this is from the same Josh Marshall, who, two days after he was selected to be Senate Majority Leader, accused Frist of racism for a pencil incident and noting that Marion Berry is a shitty elected leader.

And, one more thing, Josh- you can end the “Clarke is no partisan- he is a Republican” bullshit:

RUSSERT: And we’re back.

Did you vote for George Bush in 2000?

CLARKE: No, I did not.

RUSSERT: You voted for Al Gore?

CLARKE: Yes, I did.

RUSSERT: In 2004, you’ll vote for John Kerry?

CLARKE: I’m not going to endorse John Kerry. That’s what the White House wants me to do. They want to say I’m part of the Kerry campaign. I’ve already pledged I’m not part of the Kerry campaign, and I will not serve in the Kerry administration.

RUSSERT: Will you vote for him?

CLARKE: That’s my business.

No shit. Go back to being wrong about North Korea, Josh, because this Clarke rehabilitation attempt is failing miserably.

Unbelievable

by John Cole|  March 29, 200412:24 pm| 17 Comments

This post is in: Media

For years, I have believed that mose media bias is the result of laziness. ignorance, and an unwillingness to look beyond one’s own personal views when reporting a story. I refused to believe in media bias, but the different treatment that Richard Clarke and Condi Rice received by those pricks may have forever changed my opinion on the issue.

Here is the transcript from Clarke’s kid glove “golly gee- were the Bush administration people really that stupid and awful” puff piece with Lesley Stahl.

Here is Condi Rice being grilled by Ed Bradley, who at one point spent several minutes badgering her to apologize to the American people or 9/11.

Hey Ed- the Bush administration did not blow up the WTC. And despite that grandstanding display from the megalomaniac Clarke, the government has no business apologizing. Last week, someone was murdered in my town- is Ed Bradley going to come here and force the police to apologize?

At any rate, I will never again attempt to deny media bias after this past week. The differing treatment of both sides is evidence enough, but add to it the fact that Clarke has been caught in, by my count, at least 200 hundred lies, yet the media is still holding him up. Why?

More Shameless Self Promotion

by John Cole|  March 26, 20041:36 am| 23 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads

The Instapundit links to this particular Day By Daycartoon by Chris Muir (which, I must agree, is genius), and states:

CHRIS MUIR’S Day By Day really deserves to be syndicated.

I could not agree more, and if you click here, you will be taken to a list of syndicates you can write to telling them how good Day by Day is, and how it deserves to be in newspapers everywhere.

How, you might ask, is this shameless self-promotion? Because I believe that if I was not the first, I was pretty damn close to the first blog in the blogosphere to promote Day By Day. He emailed me, I immediately recognized his genius, and it has been a daily read ever since.

While I am promoting things, let me remind everyonethat the best blog in the world is now back after a lengthy hiatus. If you have not been there before, go read Protein Wisdom. If you really want a belly laugh, click here to read the greatest fisking ever done– and I think it was done before ‘fisking’ was even a term. To this day, I still think “Let’s Rall!” is the greatest post ever written in the blogosphere, and when Protein Wisdom disappeared, I was so upset that one night, after a few cocktails and 3-4 months without Jeff and company, I actually used Yahoo’s people search and called every Jeff Goldstein in Colorado. I never found, the right one, btw..
