Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Jack be nimble, jack be quick, hurry up and indict this prick.

Weird. Rome has an American Pope and America has a Russian President.

Bark louder, little dog.

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

One way or another, he’s a liar.

If you thought you’d already seen people saying the stupidest things possible on the internet, prepare yourselves.

The line between political reporting and fan fiction continues to blur.

I’m starting to think Jesus may have made a mistake saving people with no questions asked.

There are times when telling just part of the truth is effectively a lie.

Do we throw up our hands or do we roll up our sleeves? (hint, door #2)

The media handbook says “controversial” is the most negative description that can be used for a Republican.

So very ready.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

Democracy is not a spectator sport.

The revolution will be supervised.

After dobbs, women are no longer free.

Celebrate the fucking wins.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

Polls are now a reliable indicator of what corporate Republicans want us to think.

Marge, god is saying you’re stupid.

You passed on an opportunity to be offended? What are you even doing here?

Sick of Their B**LS**T

What is this? 1950?:

Broadcasters meeting Wednesday to discuss indecency said they would consider an industry code of conduct, an idea the nation’s chief telecommunications regulator suggested they should pursue.

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Michael Powell said that if the industry leaves it to the government to set strict standards for broadcast decency, they won’t like the result.

“You do not want to ask the government to write a ‘Red Book’ of dos and don’ts,” Powell told the gathering organized by the National Association of Broadcasters. “I understand the complaint about knowing where the line is, but heavier government entanglement through a ‘dirty-conduct code’ will not only chill speech, it may deep-freeze it.”

No, Mr. Powell, I don’t want the government writing the book on what I can and can not view or read or see or purchase, you grandstanding, bullying shitheel. I am officially sick and tired of this bullshit from these jackasses. These stupid fucking assholes keep trying to impose their morality on me, and I am not going to take this crap anymore. They can go piss in the wind for all I care. And this is bi-partisan horseshit from our elected officals.*

* If this offended you, you can do what everyone else can do with the radio and television. You can make the personal decision not to come here any more, just as you can change the DAMNED CHANNEL ON YOUR TV AND RADIO.

How Serious Are They

One of the main talking points of many Democrats and Senator Kerry is that if they had done things ‘their way,’ they would have received a lot more international support and we would not be shuldering the burden in Iraq. Despite the fact that this is laughable statement due to the fact that the rest of the world really doesn’t have the military capability or willingness to achieve what we have achieved in Iraq, I wonder where they get the idea that they somehow would be able to persuade the ‘international community’ to provide more military assistance. There certainly is little precedent for this sort of statement, and Afghanistan is a sterling example.

Very few will argue that the world was united in regards to the mission in Afghanistan. Today, thousands of troops from NATO countries are deployed, and if you examine the rhetoric, everyone is 100% behind the mission and reconstruction there. Except, the actions of the international communities suggest otherwise:

Afghan President Hamid Karzai declared an international meeting on development aid a success Thursday, but warned Afghanistan’s battle against the illegal drug trade was a long-term struggle.

International donors at the two-day summit pledged more than $8 billion in reconstruction aid to Afghanistan. That sum is to be delivered during the next three years with Afghanistan receiving nearly $4.5 billion in aid this year…

More than 700 delegates from more than 50 countries were at the conference, including Secretary of State Colin Powell.

The United States pledged almost half this year’s aid and donated an additional $123 million to combating Afghanistan’s illegal drug trade. Mr. Powell said America is also prepared to provide troops for this purpose.

Do the math- 49 countries contribute half the aid, we contribute the other half. That is the kind of support that we get when the international community is behind us. With that in mind, when John Kerry and the anti-Iraq Democrats makes statements like this:

We need to internationalize both the military and civilian sides of the occupation and build a coalition that will provide tangible assistance in terms of boots on the ground and money in the coffers for Iraqi reconstruction. Only in this way will we reduce the risk to American service members and alleviate some of the financial burden on the American taxpayer for reconstruction.

Just giggle and admire their audacity.

Cultural Divide

Sometimes I wonder if maybe I just view the world differently than everyone else, other times I just wonder if Americans have our own unique worldview. When I read stories like this, it makes me wonder:

Europe reacted with horror Thursday to the grisly images of four American bodies being mutilated in Iraq, with some newspapers speculating about a quicker U.S. troop withdrawal and others saying it could serve as a new standard for attacks…

In the Milan daily Corriere della Sera, which published similar pictures, columnist Gianni Riotta noted that the attack came during the U.S. presidential election campaign, and that previous U.S. decisions to withdraw troops, in Lebanon and Somalia, have come after particularly bloody attacks.

”If the American public opinion is impressed by the fierce torture of Fallujah and by the endless stream of army dead … it could force the White House to do a turnaround, hand over governing to the Iraqis, leave some troops based there, and then get out,” he wrote.

This is, I must note, the completely different reaction that I had. Yes, I was horrified by the disgusting inhumanity of it, but at the same time, there was never even a thought of cutting and running. My reaction was that we must hunt down those who did this, and that this is more evidence that we need to fix this region. I would like to think that the majority of Americans se things the same way, but I don’t know sometimes.

Matthews At His Worst

I was watching Softball with Chris Matthews last night, and at one point I was so nauseated by his behavior while interviewing Richard Clarke that I actually yelled “Why don’t you just tongue kiss him, Matthews?” here is a segment of the interview that was typical Matthews:

MR. MATTHEWS: Let me ask you about the people in the White House. Condi Rice. Should she be national security advisor to the president or is she over her head?

MR. CLARKE: Oh, no, she is not over her head at all. She has a very, very good understanding of what the president wants, what the president needs. And the best thing as national security advisor, aside from expertise

The O’Franken Factor is worth listening to, although I have yet to hear anything that I did not know already. So far everything has been nothing more than whining about how bad and evil Republicans are. If you agree with them, it is bearable (as I did when they were getting pissed about the Medicaire legislation that just passed), but the rest of the time it can get annoying. They really need to get rid of his sidekick, this annoying and apparently idiotic woman who may be one of the most inept radio interviewer of all time. Note to Katherine Lanpher- those big things on your ears are earphones- please use them to hear when your guests or Al are speaking. When they are, you should not speak, because this is radio, and three voices at once doesn’t work.

I think the real depressing thing about Air America isRandi Rhodes. Of all the liberal talent in the country, they choose this vile individual (think a female Michael Savage) whose own web site links approvingly to
Jews Really Did It What Really Happened. I wonder what Dave Niewert has to say about this- certainly Rush Limbaugh linking to the KKK would not go unnoticed.

Grumble, Grumble…

I don’t like this bill…

President Bush, eager to hand another victory to the social conservatives who make up his most loyal base of political support, decided on an elaborate ceremony to sign into law legislation expanding legal rights of the unborn.

The Unborn Victims of Violence Act makes it a crime to harm a fetus during an assault on a pregnant woman. Bush was signing the bill, which took five years to get through Congress, on Thursday in the Rose Garden.

People on both sides of the fetal rights and abortion issue have said the new law will have far-reaching consequences.

Abortion opponents welcome it as a step toward more sweeping protections for the unborn, while abortion-rights proponents say the measure represents the first recognition in federal law of an embryo or fetus as a person separate from the woman.

Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., Bush’s opponent in this fall’s election voted against the bill.

No, it isn’t because I am in favor of killing ‘unborn babies,’ but because I think this bill is stupid for a number of reasons, chief of which is that the bill is so limited, that this is clearly nothing more than pandering. It only applies to federal crimes, which the story itself refers to as a “terrorist attack or drug-related shooting.” With all due respect to pregnant victims of terrorism, there does not seem to be a really big need for this legislation.
