My sister (located just north of Tampa in a sturdy house in a non-evacuation zone) and I (further north on the Nature Coast) are collaborating on a Hurricane Milton playlist. Here’s what we have so far:
Suggestions welcome!
For us, the worst effect so far is hearing Ron DeSantis’s droning, adenoidal voice during his frequent appearances on the local news.
Gods, I despise that ambulatory pile of armadillo dung! I hate him so much I am compelled to flip him off every time I pass a TV with his mug on it.
One of the many things I hate about DeSantis is how he snaps out weather and response updates in a pained, exasperated tone, as if resentful of the obligation.
Just now, answering a reporter question, DeSantis declined to push back on the widespread Trump-operative lies about FEMA activities in North Carolina, saying he “wasn’t there” but assuring Floridians wouldn’t be victims of graft under his watch. As fucking if!
DeSantis is a small man in search of a balcony and one of the most prolific Republican crooks to ever fleece the citizenry in a state so corrupt it makes Louisiana blush. Fuck that guy!
Anyhoo, I expect we’ll endure worse than Puddin’ Boots as conditions deteriorate later today but am confident we’ll be okay. My thoughts are with those nearer to the projected center.
I am doing laundry and baking cookies because having clean clothes is good and why the hell not? I am making these sticky toffee pudding cookies because my sister-in-law loves that dessert above all others. She’s a hard-working healthcare provider who deserves something sweet.
Y’all stay safe, and please update us here when you can. Open thread!

It’s so funny you should say that about DeSantis, Betty. I had the TV on MSNBC but was not really watching it, just reading the newspaper, when this awful droning voice came on and just kept going on and on, and I thought who the heck is that guy? When I turned to the TV, of course it was DeSatan. I hope someday you guys will be rid of that loser, just as I hope one of these days my fellow Tennesseans will come to their senses and kick these MAGA morons we have as congress critters out of office. It occurred to me today that for the first year and a half of the time period when Trump was having these unsupervised and secret phone calls with Putin, he was sitting in a resort full of boxes stuffed with national security secrets he wasn’t supposed to have. Are those isolated facts or two parts of the same story? Did he take the documents in order to read them to Putin, or to photograph them and send the images to Putin?

I’ve been reading about the Muslim vote in Michigan. I saw some quotes from a Muslim woman urging Muslims to vote for Jill Stein. Taking aside the fact that Stein is a rather obvious grifter, this woman’s logic does not make any sense. She acted like Harris and trump are equally bad when it comes to Gaza and Israel. That is demonstrably not true. In addition, only one of the candidates called for a ban on Muslims regarding immigration. She was almost gleeful about the prospect of Harris losing Michigan because of the Muslim vote. She may get what she wants. If trump wins they’ll go back to the Abraham Accords which ignores the Palestinians, and that will be the end of any US action in the Middle East. Israel will finish taking the best land in the West Bank, will do zippo in Gaza other than an occasional bombing, and have the full support of the US no matter what they do.
I remember once seeing something on PBS where they interviewed an older black woman who was from Alabama. She recalled how when she was first able to vote she voted numerous times for people who were overtly bigoted because they were the lesser of two evils. What bothers me the most about this woman in Michigan is she apparently could care less about the effects on people other than Muslims a trump victory would have. Trans people will lose all protections, the EEOC will cease to exist, OSHA might go away, etc. Shortsighted and uncaring, a pretty awful combination.

@JiveTurkin: If it’s the same person I saw quoted, she’s a rep for Jill Stein’s campaign, and she’s openly gloating about the possibility of swinging Michigan from Harris to Trump. That’s not acting like they’re equally bad, that’s acting like Trump is better, for… reasons, I guess. Counting coup? Making the point that you can discipline and punish? That’s another trick that never works.
Jill Stein gotta Jill Stein. She’s been at this forever, and I suspect her main competition is not voting at all, so her influence is overrated. Who knows.

On the night Dad died, we were unceremoniously kicked out of the hospice facility in center city Philly and no one was at the parking garage to let us in to get to our vehicles at 4am. It started to rain. I mean RAIN. The heavens opened up because I was in too much shock to cry. When we finally got to our cars, the way home was flooded out for me (my other family got home ok). So I had a scary detour in the middle of the darkest night. But I persevered, back tracked, and got home eventually.

One of the things non hurricane country people don’t appreciate is how part of the process is ….boring. Waiting for it to pass and be done. Especially if you lose power or might, so you have to plan to be entertained for hours or days stuck in a house. I live alone now, but when I lived with my sister and young nephew and we had foster kids, that was a big deal. Luckily I like to read so I only need to plan for battery lights.
Hurricane Francis was the weakest of the 2004 storms but it moved at 6 miles an hour almost lengthwise up the state, it was huge and rainy and took a week. Because it was so big its edges were over the oceans and so it got heat and water and didn’t weaken enough over land. We lost power, and we’re not in danger and the danger thing wouldn’t go away. There was a lot of flooding all over, including inland.
I am in an annoyed state of boredom. I haven’t made it worse by listening to DeSantos though. Yesterday after work I ran and got my Covid booster. I figured if it made me tired it wouldn’t matter since I can’t do anything for the next couple of days anyway. This far north it’s just a dark rainy day. Yesterday was oddly sunny and beautiful but I had to work.

Oh, yeah, and… on one of They Might Be Giants’ tours some years ago, they decided to compose a brief song celebrating every venue they performed at, which they collected into an album called “Venue Songs”. When they were in Asheville, NC, they performed at a place called The Orange Peel. Their song was a rather pretty sort of country waltz from the POV of a literal orange peel, and the last verse was:
“When the flood waters reach where I lay
French Broad River will float me away
And I hate you for that
I hate you for that
I’m The Orange Peel…”

I know Christian rock isn’t always that popular, but Jars of Clay made some good music and there’s two songs – “Flood” and “Sinking” – that I liked back in the 1990s.
Relistening to “Sinking” now. It’s pretty good.

I can’t believe no one had “Should I Stay or Should I Go” by The Clash! (We are staying in Naples. Though the tornado warnings are freaking me out.)

@Gvg:
I reckon the only thing that could equal the “thrill” of an earthquake is be an unexpected tornado or wildfire. Having a monster storm staring you down for days in advance must be a different kind of awful.
Before the days of weather satellites, hurricanes were much stealthier, all you had were a dark sky and plunging barometer.
Best of luck!

@Gvg: Somewhat similar to the boredom living out on the farm in a northern Illinois blizzard, but without the threat of a hurricane wind and rain: Make sure the lamps and kerosene heater is filled. If the power goes out tg for a gas stove. You can stick food in a snowbank if you must. Then stand in the window and watch it blow and say ” yup, can’t see across the orchard anymore.” And wait.
Dig out after and marvel at the size of the snow drifts and cheer the snow plows when they make it through

Umm, waiting (weeks!) for the power to come back on when it’s 105° and 98% humidity so the windows are open and the mosquitoes are crashing against the window screen because they can smell you, so you dare not go outside to try and catch a non-existent breeze…. Yeah, waiting AFTER the storm is the worst.

Here’s a very different Who Will Stop the Rain?
A synthpop funtime by Heaven 17. The lyrics seem very Florida to me (excerpted):
I heard a rumor that fires were started
Flame in the streets and tension uncharted
Bigger than life at the edge of the city
Ashes and diamonds gleaming with pity
Who’ll stop the rain
Who’ll stop the action
East side west side
The world moves on
Between midnight and dawn you slept through the deadlines
Believe in me and we’ll hit the tall headlines
Look up and laugh be happy today
Here come the waves count three pray
…
A global affair in big house U.S.A.
A moving violation, angels over Broadway
The next voice you hear will be the main attraction
The next time we love standby for action
Meet me tonight and love me for ever
Let’s be happy let’s be famous whatever the weather
The rain must fall and night time is calling
Golden boy and golden girl, it’s a great day in the morning
Who’ll stop the rain
Who’ll stop the action
East side west side
The world moves on

@Quinerly: During work days when I played music over the classroom sound system they were only allowed to listen to class-themed music that related to aquatic science. So they were motivated to find songs to add to the playlist over the years.
There are probably 75 more songs on the playlist that are ocean related that I didn’t list like Rock Lobster, Octopuses Garden, Yellow Submarine, etc. because they are not so directly related to storms or rain.

You kids have covered all the songs I know, so I’ll leave you all with this incredible apple cake recipe. I’ve made it twice in the last month. It’s incredibly light, you’d think it was made with cake flour.
I chop the apples much smaller than the recipe says for – in my opinion – better distribution. My cook time has been around 35 minutes, and I do have a separate oven thermometer, so it’s not my oven running hot.
I get between 3-1/2 and 3-3/4 cups of apples using two large Granny Smiths. I personally would not use a softer apple for this, because you do want a bit of apple texture, right?
Stay safe, peeps.

There’s a jangle-pop group from San Francisco called The Umbrellas, name appropriate for the deluge of rain in Florida. Their most recent one is called “Fairweather Friend” theumbrellasca.bandcamp.com/album/fairweather-friend. Second, “Wasn’t It a Mighty Day” by the Chad Mitchell Trio:

April Wine – Sign of the Gypsy Queen. About running from a storm.
Jethro Tull’s Stormwatch album was a gloomy work. “Dark Ages” tone is evident from the title. “Something’s on the Move” is about a new ice age, not a hurricane. The instrumental “Elegy” is a nice balm.
