Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

There are more Russians standing up to Putin than Republicans.

We know you aren’t a Democrat but since you seem confused let me help you.

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

This chaos was totally avoidable.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

GOP baffled that ‘we don’t care if you die’ is not a winning slogan.

Innocent people do not delay justice.

Narcissists are always shocked to discover other people have agency.

The world has changed, and neither one recognizes it.

Human rights are not a matter of opinion!

Trump should be leading, not lying.

The most dangerous place for a black man in America is in a white man’s imagination.

After dobbs, women are no longer free.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

When tyranny becomes law, rebellion becomes duty. ~Thomas Jefferson

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

The gop is a fucking disgrace.

One of our two political parties is a cult whose leader admires Vladimir Putin.

He really is that stupid.

Republicans firmly believe having an abortion is a very personal, very private decision between a woman and J.D. Vance.

There are no moderate republicans – only extremists and cowards.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

One lie, alone, tears the fabric of reality.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

I don’t have shit all to talk about. I mean I do, but I don’t have the energy. My big event of the day was getting a new phone. It had not been on my agenda, but I dropped my phone in the commode and even though it did not totally submerge, only the corner of it got wet, I knew that I would never be able to hold it to my face again without thinking “YOU ARE PUTTING YOUR FACE ON A TOILET PHONE” so I went and replaced it. Apparently I had had that one since 2017 (we looked it up at the store), so that’s basically 8 years for a phone, which I think is pretty good. So I got a new one and it with deals and tradein and veterans discount on service will be about 15 bucks a month increase over the duration of my contract from what I am paying now, so I did it.

That’s it. That is really all I have for you. Toodles.

I bought a new CD player/ radio for the Camry I bought 10 days ago. The CD player in the car was absolutely dreadful, and I enjoyed tooling around town today blasting the best of Earth wind and Fire with the windows down.

A family member participated in a research study for a time. At intervals, he would receive a questionnaire assessing his health and general situation. One of the questions was about potentially stressful life events, such as childbirth, losing a job, moving house, etc. The list of options included “getting a new cell phone.”

I saw this today (via Metafilter): theguardian.com/commentisfree/2024/oct/29/chatshow-saoirse-ronan-graham-norton-women

Saoirse Ronan basically shutting down the bros.  And the -discussion- of the interchange there was also very interesting.  I remember some time ago we talked about women in conversations, men interrupting, etc.  And Deborah Tannen’s book _You Just Don’t Understand_.  And this reminded me of that.

Redmayne’s revelation that he was shown how to use a phone as a weapon if attacked proves quite the hoot, with Mescal riffing on the absurdity – “Who’s actually going to do that, though?” – Norton chiming in, and Denzel laughing along. Ronan is trying to say something but she gets honked over, before managing to cut through with a line for the ages: “That’s what girls have to think about all the time”.

Oooooof. The look on the other actors’ faces after Saoirse has detonated this chat-icide bomb is hilariously mesmerising, as is the sudden silence, which is split-second but also seems to last 27 years. Ronan obligingly diffuses it by provoking audience applause with a rallying, “amirite ladies?”. And then everyone moves on. Well, everyone except the internet, which has been picking over the entrails ever since.
    [….]

Possibly the best part of the entire thing is the moment after, surely a shoo-in for the Best Silence Oscar. Personally I’d have liked it to have been broken by Denzel thundering “WHERE IS YOUR IMPROV NOW?”, but for some reason such lines desert our leading men. Caught unawares, Redmayne offers a sort of wan yas-kween nod. But the applause for Ronan is seized on as a natural break, and the conversation moves on without anyone at all discussing by far and away the most fascinating thing said on the sofa thus far.

And that doesn’t even get into the -substance- of the interchange, about the lived experience of women as compared to men.  I remember when I was 30 (a bloody lifetime ago), coming back from 3yr in France, and telling my sisters about how safe it was, how I’d walk around basically anytime of night, no worries.  And my 17yo sister said to me: “not if you’re a woman”.  Boom.  Boom.  BOOM.

Cole, you’ve probably already heard about this but it’s an amazing story about a kid who had an entire online life in World of Warcraft while his body was giving out. His parents only learned of after his death. Link.

We only learnt of our son’s secret online life after he died at 25
When Mats Steen died from a muscle-wasting disorder, his parents believed that his life had been a tragically lonely one — until hundreds of emails from strangers arrived. It turns out that he’d found friendship and even romance in a gaming community

    There’s a documentary about it:

The Remarkable Life of Ibelin is on Netflix from October 25

A wise lesson for life: If standing and “busy” in the bathroom, let the phone go to voicemail (not sure the same applies to the finer sex). Pretending to be ambidextrous when you aren’t is dangerous activity, especially when your phone is always in your left pants pocket (I’m right handed).

I’m trying to both prepare for my birthday trip starting Friday and also trying to learn this new process for this MAJOR assignment I have for my new job.

Right now my schedule is WFH mostly w/two on-site work days a pay period which for me translates to one day a week.  Normally it’s fine…I do hate having to do all the damn prep for on-site days.  I have to get up in the wee hours, drive to BART, hop on BART (cause of course no dang parking near my work building AND just dramatically cheaper to take BART) work for 10.5 hours and then return home via BART drive back home.  I swear that one day shouldn’t be a big deal, but honestly, it takes SOOOO much out out me that it literally takes me at least the next 4 days after just to get rid of the pain from one dang day.  And TBH, nothing I do on-site is any better than what I do at home.  It’s honestly a waste of my time and theirs.

Anyway, I say all that to say, I’ve decided to just bite the bullet and talk to my manager about just working from home, at least for the duration of this project.  One because I truly don’t do ANYTHING different on site than I do at home.  Two, my productivity does NOT change.  Three, I need to really up my physical fitness cause this muscle pain feels crippling sometimes, but of course I can’t really say that to my job because it’s not a handicap it’s just cause I’m out of shape and truly just need to lose weight.

At the very least, I hope that I can get her to agree to allow me to work from home for the duration of this damn project.  It’s just too important and I’m frustrated that I’m not getting it the way I know I could if I can and on-site work one day a dang week ain’t helping me.

So fingers crossed she at least agrees for the short term complete WFH and then a discussion at a later date to go to a permanent WFH.

All of us parents of disabled kids worry about our kid having a limited and diminished life, so it is heartening to see one kid who created a rich and full life for himself. And of course his parents didn’t know about it, he was a teen, teens kept secrets from their parents, it’s a requirement of being a teenager.

I am not a gamer, at all, and as a result, much of the story left me scratching my head. How do you get you avatar to kiss another avatar? How is it possible? Please, no one try to explain this to me, my eyes are getting ready to glaze over, I won’t understand a word you type.

My phone’s bad battery behavior and random rebooting got worse, and I noticed my hardcase was looking warped, so I thought the last time I dropped it I must have really damaged it (the case). I pried my phone out, and it’s not the case, the battery is swelling up. So I’m going to try to get a new one under the insurance I have, I haven’t even paid this one off yet, 5 months to go. The Harris campaign estimated the size of the crowd to be more than 75,000 people, which would make it a markedly larger assembly than the one former President Donald Trump spoke to on Jan. 6, 2021…

…According to the House Jan. 6 Committee that investigated the riot and Trump’s efforts to overturn the election, 53,000 attended the former president’s “Stop the Steal” rally.

Trump has been obsessed with crowd sizes since he first declared his candidacy in 2015.

    mediaite.com/politics/kamala-harris-draws-massive-crowd-at-ellipse-notches-larger-audience-than-trum…

@lamh47:  When I was taking my mother to physical therapy for her back, the physical therapist noticed my posture was heading in the same direction that my mother’s landed on.  My mother has a curve in her spine that prevents her from standing completely upright. She suggested I start doing the same posture exercise that she suggested for my mother. The exercise is very simple and it has helped my back by strengthening my back muscles and my posture is much better. What I do with my mother is sit ramrod straight, neck and back straight, shoulders back, no slouching for five minutes each hour you are sitting down, or at least five times a day. It really does help, but is kind of painful at first and when it starts to get easier that means the muscles are stronger and the back pain gets better or goes away completely.  The therapist also suggested that I make my best effort to walk with the same upright posture.  You could give it a shot, it might help.

Presidential historians tell us the most important thing about a president is character — does he or she have character. Kamala has character. She’ll always stand up for Latinos, but not just Lati- — she’ll stand up for everyone who deserves to be stood up for, and that’s all Americans.

Donald Trump has no character. He doesn’t give a damn about the Latino community. He’s failed businessman. He’s — he only cares about the billionaire friends he has and accumulating wealth for those at the top.

You know, he says immigrants are “poisoning the blood” of our country. Give me a break. He wants to do away with the birthright citizenship. Who the hell else said that in the last 100 years?

And just the other day, a speaker at his rally called Puerto Rico a “floating island of garbage.” Well, let me tell you something. I don’t — I — I don’t know the Puerto Rican that — that I know — or a Puerto Rico, where I’m fr- — in my home state of Delaware, they’re good, decent, honorable people. The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporter’s — his — his demonization of Latinos is unconscionable, and it’s un-American. It’s totally contrary to everything we’ve done, everything we’ve been.

Now, Trump has di- — tried to divide the country based on race, ethnicity, anything that does harm, to take their eye off the ball about what the terrible things he’s done and will do. But Kamala Harris has fought for all Americans and will be a president for all of America.

He was clearly calling the “comedian” garbage. The possessive (rather than the plural) was clearly the intent. The “gaffe” will have no impact on the election.

Around here I have to guess it might be more to do with our razor tight Congressional race in the WA-3rd between Marie Glusenkamp Perez and a total MAGA Nazi Joe Kent.  The Joe Kent supporters are really getting vicious and the ad war on local TV is as vicious as I have ever seen.

I mean seriously, the presidential election in WA and OR is not in doubt and if Harris is in danger of losing either WA or OR then we are in Reagan era landslide territory

I’m not sure why they bother with a ballot box in Central Portland.  I don’t think there are any close races there except for City Council and that is just a big slate of progressives and moderates (and nutcases and cranks) competing in a ranked choice election.  Maybe they are just really stupid.

Here’s hoping they get caught.  The FBI is on it.  They have a picture of the vehicle (Volvo Sedan) and they know the approximate time both ballot boxes were set on fire in Portland and Vancouver.  So they can probably trace the route the drive and there must be a bazillion traffic cameras and security cameras in route.  Hopefully at least one of them caught a HD video of that same car and their faces will be visible along with the license plate.  Even if it was stolen if they get any good images of the criminals they should be able to track them down with facial recognition and the public’s help.  People here are very pissed.

    @Another Scott: I agree w you

The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporter’s — his — his demonization of Latinos is unconscionable, and it’s un-American. It’s totally contrary to everything we’ve done, everything we’ve been.

his supporter’s is the adjective, modifying the noun, demonization. So he’s calling out the behavior as garbage behavior.
He’s not throwing an insult by labeling a person or a group.

i love that he said something strong about it. Anyone would sputter while struggling to find words to call this out.

@lamh47: You won’t like this advice but if you want to keep your job, go to the office one day a week. You don’t want them to forget you exist, no matter how friendly the immediate supervisor,

Better yet, two days. Commuting is something we all do. I drove, caught a commuter train, then two DC Metros for 14 years for 1:40 each way. I LOVED the afternoon naps going home!

And I won’t lose my job because they need me as much as I need them and there a hiring freeze. Also not for nothing, 50% of our department does not work at central office.

If she denies it that’s fine as well, but you never know unless you ask…so I’ve done that.

Besides…the building will start construction eventually so even if she say no now, in January the on-site department will be closed for construction.

Two years ago when we bought the prius of my dreams I was disappointed to discover that it had no CD player and no option for one.

@Chet Murthy: thank you for linking to Ms. Ronan not only being talked over but then revealing how clueless some men can be about the daily experiences of women.  It can go beyond the author’s description of thinking about one’s keys or phone as a weapon, there’s the curation of one’s purse when going out at night to just the bare essentials, there’s thinking about one’s shoes (the better to run in) or jewelry (I have a bracelet I like to wear at night as it’s heavy enough to break a nose) or wondering if it’s okay to take a walk at night.  So many things about which men are unaware, or if they are, may feel the best solution is for you NOT to do them.

I finally had to get a phone a couple of months back. My old phone was also from 2017. In my case, the memory was full. It seems that the Android OS takes a little more memory with every update. Even after deleting every single non-essential app and every photo, the phone’s memory was around 97% full! That forced me to get a new phone…
