I don’t have shit all to talk about. I mean I do, but I don’t have the energy. My big event of the day was getting a new phone. It had not been on my agenda, but I dropped my phone in the commode and even though it did not totally submerge, only the corner of it got wet, I knew that I would never be able to hold it to my face again without thinking “YOU ARE PUTTING YOUR FACE ON A TOILET PHONE” so I went and replaced it. Apparently I had had that one since 2017 (we looked it up at the store), so that’s basically 8 years for a phone, which I think is pretty good. So I got a new one and it with deals and tradein and veterans discount on service will be about 15 bucks a month increase over the duration of my contract from what I am paying now, so I did it.
That’s it. That is really all I have for you. Toodles.

I bought a new CD player/ radio for the Camry I bought 10 days ago. The CD player in the car was absolutely dreadful, and I enjoyed tooling around town today blasting the best of Earth wind and Fire with the windows down.

A family member participated in a research study for a time. At intervals, he would receive a questionnaire assessing his health and general situation. One of the questions was about potentially stressful life events, such as childbirth, losing a job, moving house, etc. The list of options included “getting a new cell phone.”
Chet Murthy
I saw this today (via Metafilter): theguardian.com/commentisfree/2024/oct/29/chatshow-saoirse-ronan-graham-norton-women
Saoirse Ronan basically shutting down the bros. And the -discussion- of the interchange there was also very interesting. I remember some time ago we talked about women in conversations, men interrupting, etc. And Deborah Tannen’s book _You Just Don’t Understand_. And this reminded me of that.
And that doesn’t even get into the -substance- of the interchange, about the lived experience of women as compared to men. I remember when I was 30 (a bloody lifetime ago), coming back from 3yr in France, and telling my sisters about how safe it was, how I’d walk around basically anytime of night, no worries. And my 17yo sister said to me: “not if you’re a woman”. Boom. Boom. BOOM.

Toilet phones are the worst.
I had a pretty good evening. Went for a long walk on a nice autumn day, dropped off my ballot, and got home just in time to watch Kamala’s address. I know a lot of people are stressed about the election, but I’m feeling in the zone.

A wise lesson for life: If standing and “busy” in the bathroom, let the phone go to voicemail (not sure the same applies to the finer sex). Pretending to be ambidextrous when you aren’t is dangerous activity, especially when your phone is always in your left pants pocket (I’m right handed).

I’m trying to both prepare for my birthday trip starting Friday and also trying to learn this new process for this MAJOR assignment I have for my new job.
Right now my schedule is WFH mostly w/two on-site work days a pay period which for me translates to one day a week. Normally it’s fine…I do hate having to do all the damn prep for on-site days. I have to get up in the wee hours, drive to BART, hop on BART (cause of course no dang parking near my work building AND just dramatically cheaper to take BART) work for 10.5 hours and then return home via BART drive back home. I swear that one day shouldn’t be a big deal, but honestly, it takes SOOOO much out out me that it literally takes me at least the next 4 days after just to get rid of the pain from one dang day. And TBH, nothing I do on-site is any better than what I do at home. It’s honestly a waste of my time and theirs.
Anyway, I say all that to say, I’ve decided to just bite the bullet and talk to my manager about just working from home, at least for the duration of this project. One because I truly don’t do ANYTHING different on site than I do at home. Two, my productivity does NOT change. Three, I need to really up my physical fitness cause this muscle pain feels crippling sometimes, but of course I can’t really say that to my job because it’s not a handicap it’s just cause I’m out of shape and truly just need to lose weight.
At the very least, I hope that I can get her to agree to allow me to work from home for the duration of this damn project. It’s just too important and I’m frustrated that I’m not getting it the way I know I could if I can and on-site work one day a dang week ain’t helping me.
So fingers crossed she at least agrees for the short term complete WFH and then a discussion at a later date to go to a permanent WFH.
Mousebumples

All of us parents of disabled kids worry about our kid having a limited and diminished life, so it is heartening to see one kid who created a rich and full life for himself. And of course his parents didn’t know about it, he was a teen, teens kept secrets from their parents, it’s a requirement of being a teenager.
I am not a gamer, at all, and as a result, much of the story left me scratching my head. How do you get you avatar to kiss another avatar? How is it possible? Please, no one try to explain this to me, my eyes are getting ready to glaze over, I won’t understand a word you type.

My phone’s bad battery behavior and random rebooting got worse, and I noticed my hardcase was looking warped, so I thought the last time I dropped it I must have really damaged it (the case). I pried my phone out, and it’s not the case, the battery is swelling up. So I’m going to try to get a new one under the insurance I have, I haven’t even paid this one off yet, 5 months to go. I have it turned off now.

My mother has a curve in her spine that prevents her from standing completely upright. She suggested I start doing the same posture exercise that she suggested for my mother. The exercise is very simple and it has helped my back by strengthening my back muscles and my posture is much better. What I do with my mother is sit ramrod straight, neck and back straight, shoulders back, no slouching for five minutes each hour you are sitting down, or at least five times a day. It really does help, but is kind of painful at first and when it starts to get easier that means the muscles are stronger and the back pain gets better or goes away completely. The therapist also suggested that I make my best effort to walk with the same upright posture. You could give it a shot, it might help.

Around here I have to guess it might be more to do with our razor tight Congressional race in the WA-3rd between Marie Glusenkamp Perez and a total MAGA Nazi Joe Kent. The Joe Kent supporters are really getting vicious and the ad war on local TV is as vicious as I have ever seen.
I mean seriously, the presidential election in WA and OR is not in doubt and if Harris is in danger of losing either WA or OR then we are in Reagan era landslide territory
I’m not sure why they bother with a ballot box in Central Portland. I don’t think there are any close races there except for City Council and that is just a big slate of progressives and moderates (and nutcases and cranks) competing in a ranked choice election. Maybe they are just really stupid.
Here’s hoping they get caught. The FBI is on it. They have a picture of the vehicle (Volvo Sedan) and they know the approximate time both ballot boxes were set on fire in Portland and Vancouver. So they can probably trace the route the drive and there must be a bazillion traffic cameras and security cameras in route. Hopefully at least one of them caught a HD video of that same car and their faces will be visible along with the license plate. Even if it was stolen if they get any good images of the criminals they should be able to track them down with facial recognition and the public’s help. People here are very pissed.

@JCJ: Yeah, me neither! ;) I was recently reminded about how long it took Trump’s team to convince him he was no longer running against Biden, so I hope all this does is convince him he still is.

@cain: yes, thank you: fuck their double standard.
lawless vs flawless.
staying honorable and civil and remaining the people we’d like to be, in the face of serious lies, smears, slanders and violent inciting hateful rhetoric from bullies. It creates some moral dilemmas, and it’s a rough challenge.

@lamh47: Talk to a nutrionist / dietitian. She got me on a diet that’s easy for me to manage. You know the usual: fruits, vegetables, beans, whole wheat bread and pasta, minimal of anything processed. You’ve seen it before, get some expert advice. Worked for me!

the speaker’s ______. The garbage is what’s on the line, not the speaker.
lamh47
@frosty: Meh…even if she only agrees to letting me continue WFH at least through the end of this month the end of this project, I would be fine with it as well.
And I won’t lose my job because they need me as much as I need them and there a hiring freeze. Also not for nothing, 50% of our department does not work at central office.
If she denies it that’s fine as well, but you never know unless you ask…so I’ve done that.
Besides…the building will start construction eventually so even if she say no now, in January the on-site department will be closed for construction.
lamh47
@frosty: already on a plan with my nutritionist/dietition. Still adjusting, but I’m doing it and hopefully it becomes the habit I want it to become

@lamh47: Read “Crooked” for back pain. Raven recommended it. The first part is what you shouldn’t do. The back part is what helps. Spoiler alert: Exercise and posture – lots of different alternaties – yoga, tai chi, weights. I had a PT who helped with that.
Gloria DryGarden
@Juju: thank you. Maybe we all need to do it. Or lie back over a barrel (rolled up pillows or towels) to reverse the forward curve of daily working postures, whether it’s kneading bread, chopping veggies, typing on a computer, changing a diaper, giving a massage.

ETA: Also, not for nothing, but I didn’t include my rant about the commute and stuff in my request, I focused on this new big project we are starting and need to complete BEFORE the holiday leaves after Thanksgiving begins.
Just so happened she mentioned in our last dept meeting that she wanted us to do what we can to focus on that project and if we need time alloted to focus then she wants us to prioritize that. So I’m using that tidbit so get me the WFH days I want!

@lamh47: it takes so much work to get suited up for a job, look nice, hav3 lunch and snacks prepared, all that..
i used to have a great deal of chronic back pain. I bought a seat pillow you can blow up easily, then deflate and roll up into a 2” ball in a tiny stuff sack. I got it at rei, and ended up testing 3 models, to find which gave me the most relief. It really helps. I took it to work, and on planes as well as using in my car.

Alright…I’m out for the night…gotta to go on-site tomorrow for work…UGH….!
Peace out and have a great night!~

the cell phone replacement last December was rough, on the heels of 3 major home repairs, COVID and a two week flu, a meniscus tear, and two months without heat.
Theres a lot that didn’t get done last fall, that I’m still catching up on or cleaning up from.

@lamh47: Good news! Mine became an easy habit – easier than “cut the carbs” which came first. Chickpea and lentil pasta opened that back up for me. Pears and bananas are OK. Sadly, no bagels still (sob).

@lamh47: Whatever leverage you can use!!!
TBH, I hate working from home. I retired just before COVID hit in 2020 and I would have quit as soon as the said I had to WFH.

Wow whoever recommended Jimmy Kimmel’s monologue above wasn’t kidding. It’s epic.

I saw an overhead shot of the Warriors stadium in San Francisco on the broadcast tonight. And it suddenly struck me — no more Goodyear Blimp! Drones do that job now.
Geoduck
@patrick II: The blimps are still aloft, but I guess they don’t do many football games anymore.
Ksmiami
@JWR: they are garbage people. Fucking deserve it
Bruce K in ATH-GR
@Geoduck: Electronic miniaturization is a brain-bender. The device you’re reading this on has more computing power, by orders of magnitude, than the computers that guided Apollo 11 to the moon and back.
And why go to the expense of a blimp, with crew, fuel, and hideously expensive lifting gas, when you can get similar camera coverage from a squadron of rechargeable battery-powered micro-helicopters?
TBone
@Kent: cool!
Ksmiami
So the MSM is trying hard to equalize joes gaffe with the targeted racism and hate of today’s GOP. Bring it – I want MAGA run over
Jay
@Bruce K in ATH-GR:
Because the blimps act as advertising, and always have.
Drones don’t do that.
Same reason the Air Force does a fly by.

@Sister Golden Bear: you’re welcome!

@HumboldtBlue: Glad you could do that. I might play other bands of that era loudly but your impulse to share loud music while cruising rocks. And it’s nice to be reminded of life outside of politics for a moment.
Two years ago when we bought the prius of my dreams I was disappointed to discover that it had no CD player and no option for one.
My husband spent hours creating flash drives of my favorites. I like CDs. I don’t like not having a player as an option.
OTOH I like the plug in hybrid.

Probably doesn’t help to read that right now.

Funny how the media suddenly believes Biden stumbling over his words signals honest hostility rather than senility.
Cheryl from Maryland
@Chet Murthy: thank you for linking to Ms. Ronan not only being talked over but then revealing how clueless some men can be about the daily experiences of women. It can go beyond the author’s description of thinking about one’s keys or phone as a weapon, there’s the curation of one’s purse when going out at night to just the bare essentials, there’s thinking about one’s shoes (the better to run in) or jewelry (I have a bracelet I like to wear at night as it’s heavy enough to break a nose) or wondering if it’s okay to take a walk at night. So many things about which men are unaware, or if they are, may feel the best solution is for you NOT to do them.

Thank you.

I finally had to get a phone a couple of months back. My old phone was also from 2017. In my case, the memory was full. It seems that the Android OS takes a little more memory with every update. Even after deleting every single non-essential app and every photo, the phone’s memory was around 97% full! That forced me to get a new phone…

Ok kids…Mookie and 2 Yankees fans grabbing at him? They could have injured him for a stupid (not) foul ball!
SO MAD, glad they were banned from Game 5, but there were some laudatory bullshit from ESPN. And they booed Freddie during the cancer segment…
