Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

With all due respect and assumptions of good faith, please fuck off into the sun.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

I really should read my own blog.

75% of people clapping liked the show!

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

Republicans in disarray!

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

He seems like a smart guy, but JFC, what a dick!

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

When you’re in more danger from the IDF than from Russian shelling, that’s really bad.

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

fuckem (in honor of the late great efgoldman)

Today’s gop: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

We will not go quietly into the night; we will not vanish without a fight.

The revolution will be supervised.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

the 10% who apparently lack object permanence

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

Oh FFS you might as well trust a 6-year-old with a flamethrower.

Republicans don’t lie to be believed, they lie to be repeated.

Let the trolls come, and then ignore them. that’s the worst thing you can do to a troll.

She burned that motherfucker down, and I am so here for it. Thank you, Caroline Kennedy.

Baby steps, because the Republican Party is full of angry babies.

Again, not much to say. Really looking forward to this election being over so more interesting stuff is disussed on the regular. Delivered the last batch of signs today, so that phase of the election is over for me.

In other election news, Republicans are now attacking a bunch of nuns:

    At least the election itself will be over soon. How much fuckery the GOP-and Trump engage in afterwards is still an open question. Hopefully we’ll win, and by a big margin.

    My god I am seeing six patients on Tuesday—I already voted and am just seeing patients as usual—I can’t imagine how bad it’s going to be holding their anxiety and my own. I can’t discuss the election, of course, unless they bring it up.They usually do but there is no telling who will actually vote. At least I have no Trumpies on my caseload, but you never know.

    When trump loses – apart from screaming fraud – he will start his 2028 campaign so all those court cases will be put on hold by his friends at the SCOTUS. He has been campaigning for 10 years – what’s another 4 to keep the disciples onside.

    If this country were still on the rails, going after a bunch of nuns six days before election day, calling the voter frauding criminals would kind of lose you the election. MAGA weirdos don’t care though. Even the ones bleating about how Democrats mistreat Christians won’t give a shit. I mean, if you can defend the Nuremberg rally we saw on Sunday–and they are–then there really isn’t anything that can sway you.

    So the GOTV effort funded by Musk’s PAC flew a bunch of Black canvassers out to Michigan before telling them who they were really working for, drove them around in the back of a rented van with no seats for them, and threatened them with not paying for their hotel rooms if they didn’t meet some unrealistic quota.

    WTF?

    Am I the only person who lost respect for John Stewart for defending Tony Hinchcliffe on his show?  I mean, are both of them not smart enough to figure out for themselves that even if you find this type of shit funny that a political rally isn’t the time and place for it?   Especially a Trump rally?

    Would John Stewart find these jokes just as funny if he was telling them at a KKK rally?   Mixed audience of skinheads and Nazis?

    Would he think it was funny if you swapped Jews for the Puerto Ricans?   October 7th?    That was all just a mix up.  Hamas thought the music festival was over and just came in to take out the trash.   Hitler wasn’t a bad guy, he was just incinerating Europe’s trash.  Sickening humor John.

    Comedians have forgotten.  White college kids didn’t invent political correctness.   Black people and other minorities did because they were sick of being demeaned and denigrated by arrogant white people who lorded over them.

    Jay posted this downstairs. Anybody think this is credible? I didn’t like the dig it had on Garland imo and the author calling Nov 5, the “pretend” election.

    That “Little Secret” Between Trump and Johnson? Here’s What It Could Mean.

    Most educated guesses assume that Trump and Johnson are “secretly” talking about installing Trump as president through a “contingent election,” whereby the House of Representatives, not the Electoral College, determines the president. I think the plot goes deeper than that, but let’s start with the contingent election idea.

    Wave Function Collapse

    October 30, 2024 at 10:07 pm

    @SpaceUnit:

    I agree. I had a long career as a R&D engineer. I often had to answer difficult questions for my organization. If I ever had questions about the results of an investigation I would always look for some completely independent way to check the results as a sanity check. I learned to try to find a way that share no assumptions or common sources with the primary investigation.

    So now lots of people are questioning the polls, for all the good reasons we have heard. What is the sanity check?

    We know that Trump very nearly tied both of the last elections. We know that the Americans blessed with a full complement of X chromosomes are turning against him in large numbers. We strongly suspect that a significant number of GOPAmericans are too. So exactly who is switching towards Trump?

    I’ve heard a laundry list of groups supposedly doing so, but they are all miniscule portions of the electorate. Anyone who tells me that edgelord 20-something males are as important as all women put together is delusional.

    So in my mind, the polling numbers just don’t add up. No one has really tried to answer the obvious question: “so who are Trump’s new voters?”

  37. 37.

    Goku (aka Amerikan Baka)

    October 30, 2024 at 10:13 pm

    @kwAwk:

    Apparently, that’s not the case according to this Elie Mystal:

    And this is where Speaker Johnson becomes critical to the whole “secret” plan. In 2020, Nancy Pelosi was speaker of the House. If states had tried to get cute and not submit their electors by the December 11 deadline, Pelosi would just have extended the deadline. But Speaker Johnson surely won’t. If electors are not submitted by December 11, he’ll likely declare the process “over” and say that the electors appointed by that date are the only ones allowed to vote for president.

    Crucially, Johnson can do this even if Republicans lose the House and Johnson is removed from power. The new House isn’t sworn in until January 3. As the violent MAGA people in your family already know, January 6 is when the House certifies the results of the Electoral College, but that is just a ceremonial day. By the time we get to January 6, the electors are supposed to have voted. December 11 is the deadline for appointing electors, December 25 the deadline for voting. Mike Johnson will still be in charge on both of those days.

Having a bill teed up and ready to go if we somehow keep the Senate, take the house, and keep the Presidency is not a bad thing. One to investigate corruption in the Supreme Court, and the other to investigate Russian interference in our elections AND within our government. Let’s get out the ROT!

    @HumboldtBlue:

    @Rusty:

    The Mystal article directly mentions the 2022 Electoral Count Reform Act:

    In 2022, Congress passed the Electoral Count Reform Act. This is the only thing our government actually did to address the failed coup attempt launched by Trump after the 2020 election. Its most important provisions essentially provide a legal fast track for election-certification challenges, which would take these disputes out of partisan legislatures and meandering state courts and put them in front of federal judges.

    That might sound comforting, but it shouldn’t. Putting any of these challenges in front of federal judges sets them on a collision course with the Republican-controlled Supreme Court. As John Roberts and his cabal of antidemocratic goons (and their wives) have repeatedly shown this year, the Supreme Court is willing to do Trump’s dirty work. In 2020, the Supreme Court rejected almost all of Trump’s various nonsensical claims to overturn that election. But I wouldn’t be so sure they’ll do so again, especially because this time the Trump people will not necessarily be asking the court to overturn the results of a state’s election. They’ll just be asking them to delay certification of those results, until some later date. In addition to ruling for the Trumpers outright, the court could simply delay hearing the case for as long as the delay is helpful for Trump. The Supreme Court can put its thumb on the scale for Trump simply by pretending to “stay out of it” and allowing the “process” to play itself out.

    If enough states refuse to certify the results of the election and submit a slate of electors—with the Supreme Court’s blessing—the math is not actually hard for Trump. Let’s say Vice President Kamala Harris wins the bare majority of Electoral College votes necessary, 270, but the Republican legislature in Wisconsin refuses to submit the state’s 10 electors by the deadline. In this scenario, the new total number of electors becomes 528, not 538—and Trump needs only 264 electoral votes to “win.” If you take Wisconsin and Nevada’s six electors out of the mix, Trump needs only 262 electoral votes to “win.” He’ll likely achieve those numbers without having to win one of the “blue wall” states.

    Maybe our Republic is already dead, and we just don’t know it yet.  Wednesday morning, we’ll know more.  Until then, try to be calm and not stress.  B/c it can’t help anything to do that.  Until we have information, we cannot act.  In eight days, we get that inforrmation.

    Be well, stay calm.  For [wife]’s sake, for your kids sake, stay calm.

    There may come a moment when we need to act.  At that moment, we will need all our marbles about us, eh?  Try to reach calm, so you can be ready if that moment arrives.
