Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

It is possible to do the right thing without the promise of a cookie.

Peak wingnut was a lie.

I am pretty sure these ‘journalists’ were not always such a bootlicking sycophants.

If you cannot answer whether trump lost the 2020 election, you are unfit for office.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

Come on, man.

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

There is no right way to do the wrong thing.

It’s a good piece. click on over. but then come back!!

The media handbook says “controversial” is the most negative description that can be used for a Republican.

Washington Post Catch and Kill, not noticeably better than the Enquirer’s.

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

’Where will you hide, Roberts, the laws all being flat?’

Finding joy where we can, and muddling through where we can’t.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

Mediocre white men think RFK Jr’s pathetic midlife crisis is inspirational. The bar is set so low for them, it’s subterranean.

With all due respect and assumptions of good faith, please fuck off into the sun.

Sometimes the world just tells you your cat is here.

Relentless negativity is not a sign that you are more realistic.

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

White supremacy is terrorism.

Who Stole Her Philtrum

Are there 10000 substantive issues I could discuss?

Yes, of course.

Are we not supposed to discuss people’s looks?

Also yes.

Am I going to anyway?

If you guessed yes, you are correct.

I can not stop thinking about this so now you aren’t allowed to either. Why does Karoline Leavitt look like someone used the adobe blur tool on her upper lip and then forgot to go back in and recreate a philtrum?

    In FYWP news,

The company behind WordPress, Automattic Inc., and its founder, Matt Mullenweg, continue to face backlash over a “nuclear war” started with WP Engine (WPE) that allegedly messed with maintenance and security of hundreds of thousands of websites.
    [snip]
WordPress must remain free for all, lawsuit says
    [snip]
WordPress software, Keller’s complaint explained, “has long been promised to be free and available to everyone forever.” This promise propelled WordPress’ popularity to, by its own estimates, “encompass more than 40 percent of all websites in the world,” his complaint said.

In the 10 years Keller used WPE, he never had any issues accessing the WordPress ecosystem, and he thought WordPress had guaranteed that it would stay that way—especially since WPE’s use of the trademark appeared to be “expressly permitted on the WordPress foundation website.” Source

    FYI.

Exposure to extreme heat could lead to faster aging, a new study published today in the journal Science Advances suggests. Older people living in hotter areas of the US showed faster aging at the molecular level than people living in cooler areas.
    [snip]
“We’re kind of surprised [at] how massive this impact could be,” says Eun Young Choi, lead author of the study and a postdoctoral associate at the University of Southern California. “The effects of extreme heat might not show up right away as a diagnosable health condition, but it could be taking a silent toll at the cellular and the molecular level which could years later develop into disability and disease.“ Source

I had my book group meeting yesterday on zoom and I was not happy with how old I looked on my video feed so I played around with the filter that “improves” your appearance.  My face was “touched up” by the zoom filter so much it looked like I was a mannequin whose face was smeared with Vaseline. You know, just like young Karoline.  The only difference between my face and young Karoline’s was I looked like an old Scout211 with Vaseline all over my face. Believe me, that was not a good look. My book group got a kick out my story trying to look younger on my video feed because as old as I am, I’m the youngest book group member in our group.  LOL.

    Good for John Deere!

A right-wing think tank pressuring shareholders of large public companies to prohibit diversity, equity, and inclusion programs suffered a blowout defeat when they took their case to farming equipment manufacturer John Deere, independent journalist and author Nancy Levine Stearns reported Wednesday.

“At John Deere’s annual shareholders meeting today, shareholders overwhelmingly rejected an anti-DEI proposal,” wrote Stearns on Bluesky. The proposal, brought to shareholders by the National Center for Public Policy Research, “received less than 1 percent of votes. Deere shareholders: DEI is in. Bigots are out.”

Will MAGA farmers boycott John Deere?

Are we not supposed to discuss people’s looks?

Depends. I will discuss Donald Trump’s looks all day long because 1) he insults other peoples looks constantly and 2) his appearance — not what he was born with, I should stress, but the way he chooses to make himself look vis a vis the impression he’s trying to make — crosses the line into obvious visual evidence of age-related mental decline. He’s clearly unable to perceive the reality of the world around him.

It’s nice to hear that Deere remains committed to DEI and realizes what a diverse engineering team brings to the company.

I saw this play out over a decade at my DOT mode.

The kicker is location.  Our state DOT had a helluva time retaining out-of-area black and women engineers because the location (state capitol in Jeff City MO) was so insulated, they couldn’t find anything to do or people to socialize with, so were gone within 2 years.
