Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

People really shouldn’t expect the government to help after they watched the GOP drown it in a bathtub.

The real work of an opposition party is to hold the people in power accountable.

“Alexa, change the president.”

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

Wake up. Grow up. Get in the fight.

This blog will pay for itself.

They want us to be overwhelmed and exhausted. Focus. Resist. Oppose.

Trump’s cabinet: like a magic 8 ball that only gives wrong answers.

T R E 4 5 O N

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

Baby steps, because the Republican Party is full of angry babies.

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

The republican speaker is a slippery little devil.

There are some who say that there are too many strawmen arguments on this blog.

Washington Post Catch and Kill, not noticeably better than the Enquirer’s.

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

“When somebody takes the time to draw up a playbook, they’re gonna use it.”

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

Dear elected officials: Trump is temporary, dishonor is forever.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

Rupert, come get your orange boy, you petrified old dinosaur turd.

The republican caucus is covering themselves with something, and it is not glory.

With one Balloon Juice Angel to start.

What say you guys?   Are you in?

Personally, I need to pair the current recoiling in horror with some straight-up action, or I am going to be in a very dark place.

What say you?   Are we up for this?

So, if you wrap your fear around you like a blanket, and you’ve sailed your ship of safety ’til you sank it, there’s a driftwood fire and some mulled wine (and hot cocoa if you prefer that) to warm you up, plus baked clams and oyster stew.

(Do you know how hard it is to get clams to absorb enough marijuana to be properly ‘baked’? I’m just saying.)

I think Rose deserves credit for The Horrors. ;-)

P.S. The title is a GREAT earworm, and I needed it because I had something awful stuck in my head. I dare not say or think it — lest it recur!

@Betty Cracker: Well, that’s one advantage I have over you. I know the darkness will come back to my brain, and need to be beaten down, curbs stomped, blasted with a 12 gauge, chopped into little bitty pieces, broken down in plasma to the atomic level, dropped into 99.9% rubbing alcohol, and then exposed to bright UV light, so it retreats for a bit.

Do you know how annoying this was, until the discovery of UV-C lightwaves, during Covid?

@HinTN: So weird on the dates.  I chose 7 or so for July and dated them all 7/31 so they would be easy to find.

I changed the dates on both of them, yesterday and today, and saved the change.  Interesting that it didn’t take.

edit: Looks like I need to be in the Media Library for the change to actually save, not in the “I am adding this to the sidebar” page.

    @HinTN:

FYI, we have already had a person who won a BJ raffle decline the 1st prize and go for one of the others.  The second runner up had REALLY hoped to win and had “bought” several tickets, so he was really pleased to win the quilty, and it was clear that things had turned out exactly as they should have.

So whoever is the first winner can choose any of the three.

The second can choose from the remaining two.

The third gets the one that remains, and I believe the official name for that is “the cheese stands alone”.

If I win second prize in the raffle, I’ll have my wife’s birthday present in hand. (Or first prize, since I’d choose the earrings and let someone else have the quilt. Already won a quilt here in a previous raffle – thanks again, Quiltingfool, we’re still totally in love with that quilt!)

    @mark: Excellent question!

A lot of the quilts at that gallery are 72″ x 72″, but I do not know about this particular quilt.

I have dashed off a message with the question and hope I will have an answer in the morning.

In more positive news, I have a large pan of pork chops and marinara simmering in the toaster oven at 250F, having added some olive oil, halved cherry tomatoes, onion, garlic, plus some rosemary and basil, since they seem to go along well, and I still have the mischievousness of childhood, imagining I’m boiling actual people named “Basil” or “Rosemary” or “Morey Amsterdam, and, Mary Tyler Moore.”

Why just those two? So I learn about what they do. In an hour or so I’ll taste it, and see if it tastes like what I had, plus, rosemary and basil, and then decide what else I need.

I bet someone will say the cherry tomatoes should be added at the end, but they haven’t see these cherry tomatoes, nearly aged out of edibleness.

Next time, I think I’ll obey the advice of experts, and saute some onion and garlic in olive oil first, then add it to the mixture, but those experts didn’t need high potency THC just to stand up and stare at the kitchen today. (Staring down a kitchen is not for amateurs! Try something easy, like a cat, first.)

I think I’ve also learned that crushed tomatoes become tomato sauce, becomes tomato paste, so, depending on your final consistency and how long you’re cooking, you can probably…

… I’m sorry, I’m taking a moment where I’m trying to banish the image of Stephen Miller suddenly being drenched by a pan of lasagna, and starts screaming in pa… starts screaming… (HuHEM) starts screaming “I’m melting!” in a crazed falsetto voice, as Americas melting pot (well, “pan”) demonstrates its power over him.

I worked from 12 to well into 73 yrs old, minus school and 3 1/2 years in the USN. In most of my working life I mostly manufactured molds for plastic products, but did work in a general machine shop in this century for 9 years. I’ve built all my furniture and I’m still building furniture, 1 large piece about 75-80% built, for a neighbor and the other one is really simple shelf unit for me. And then I’m done. It does take a while as I only work rather slowly at it any more.
