Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

“What are Republicans afraid of?” Everything.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

In after Baud. Damn.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

You cannot shame the shameless.

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

It is not hopeless, and we are not helpless.

If rights aren’t universal, they are privilege, not rights.

A tremendous foreign policy asset… to all of our adversaries.

They are not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

Our messy unity will be our strength.

Of course you can have champagne before noon. That’s why orange juice was invented.

You know it’s bad when the Project 2025 people have to create training videos on “How To Be Normal”.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

We will not go back.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

Prediction: the gop will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

Following up on Betty’s earlier post… the National Guard / FBI ‘jackboots’ seem no more pleased with their new Trumpist assignment than the DC natives:

Most people have no idea that there are already 32 federal law enforcement agencies with a presence in DC and more than a half dozen local law enforcement agencies. Violent crime keeps going down while Trump escalates his lies to keep Epstein off of the headlines.

— Schnorkles O'Bork (@schnorkles.bsky.social) August 11, 2025 at 10:56 AM

True. Per Rolling Stone, “Trump Declares War on Unhoused D.C. Residents: ‘No MR. NICE GUY’”:

Donald Trump demanded that unhoused Washington, D.C., residents “have to move out [of the city] IMMEDIATELY.” The statement comes amid his continuing attacks on homeless people after signing an executive order pressing local governments across the country to unhoused people from the streets.

“We’re having a News Conference tomorrow in the White House,” Trump wrote Sunday on Truth Social. “I’m going to make our Capital safer and more beautiful than it ever was before. The Homeless have to move out, IMMEDIATELY. We will give you places to stay, but FAR from the Capital.”…

Trump has hinted at his plans to attack individuals without permanent housing for years. In 2022, he called for using “large parcels of inexpensive land in the outer reaches of the cities” to create tent cities full of unhoused people — essentially internment camps. His 2024 campaign plan proposed cracking down on people who are unhoused, addicted to drugs, or mentally ill by putting them in institutions, forced substance use treatment, or incarceration…

A June 2024 decision by the conservative majority in the Supreme Court made criminalizing homelessness easier by allowing cities to ban sleeping outdoors…

The curfew zone is unrelated to Trump’s tantrum. The DC government has been imposing extended curfews for juveniles for most of the summer on selected neighborhoods in which groups of kids have been hanging out.

A Jackal public service announcement: Kids, don’t smoke.

A man in Austria has jumped on to a high-speed train after apparently being left behind at a station stop.

According to local media reports, the man, an Algerian aged 24, is reported to have decided to take advantage of a scheduled stop a St Poelten, 64km (60 miles) west of the capital Vienna, for a cigarette break.

It was too late by the time he realised the train had started pulling out of the station, but he took the decision to climb on to the space between two carriages, anyway.

He started banging on the windows to alert fellow passengers before an emergency stop was performed to allow him on board.

He had a heated argument with the train conductor, Austrian tabloid Heute said.

The service from Zurich, Switzerland, to Vienna arrived with a seven minute delay, a spokesman for Austrian rail (OBB) told AFP news agency.

“It is irresponsible, this kind of thing usually ends up with someone dying,” he said.

      The man has been arrested.

A similar incident occurred in January in Germany when a passenger – this time a fare-dodger – clung to the outside of a German high-speed train.

The man, a Hungarian national, told police he had left his luggage on the train during his cigarette break and did not want to be parted from it.

That top video — 6 guys, ALL of whom are wearing different hats or none at all, different shirts, different gear, different pants, different footwear, no name tags, no badges, no unit identifiers — this is not an official law enforcement group. Army, Navy, Marines, highway patrol, sheriff deputies, city cops, campus police, bank guards, weekend warriors, Boy Scouts — EVERY official group has an on-duty uniform and identifiers.

These guys, they could be anybody. How are they allowed by LEOs to do anything in their jurisdiction? Why would any regular citizen obey them, at least until they pull weapons? Surely at some point they’ll run into a pack of open-carry citizens and blood will flow.

Trump planned  D.C. Takeover Because He Hated Route to His Golf Course

Two of the photos showed a total of about 10 tents on the side of the road near a highway ramp The Guardian identified as about a mile from the White House. One picture showed a person sleeping on the steps of the American Institute of Pharmacy Building on Constitution Avenue. And another was a picture of some trash in the E Street Expressway by the Kennedy Center.

This is the route the president takes to his frequent outings to his Trump National Golf Club in Virginia.

      . . .

While every city in America could be cleaner, Trump’s version of “beautification” is forcibly removing homeless people so he doesn’t have to see them on his way to go play golf.

In his 31-page opinion, U.S. District Judge Paul Engelmayer of the Southern District of New York criticized the Department of Justice for using “demonstrably false” reasoning to justify the release of grand jury testimony.

The transcripts would “not reveal new information of any consequence” about Epstein and Maxwell’s crimes, according to Judge Engelmayer, who suggested that the Trump administration’s push to release documents might be an intentional “diversion.”

“Its entire premise — that the Maxwell grand jury materials would bring to light meaningful new information about Epstein’s and Maxwell’s crimes, or the Government’s investigation into them — is demonstrably false,” he wrote.

But isn’t the DC National Guard composed of residents of DC? Reminds me of the Hardliners Coup that ended the Soviet Union. When the citizens of Moscow rose up, the hardliners called in the troops from the nearest base – and those local boys wouldn’t shoot their grannies.

@Kirk: So does anybody know why these two teenagers attacked him?

We were told it was a carjacking.  There are even staged photos and videos that tell us the “real true story” of that unfortunate event. Sort of a dramatization that depicts the real, actual thing that actually really happened!

What? You mean we don’t buy it? Unpossible!

Also a guy whose Russian grandfather was  executed by Russia and  was either identified as ours, or more likely falsely identified as our agent by Aldrich Ames. Worked for Soviet embassy in USA.

His execution blew their family apart. Widow and kids made it back to US. Her grandchild is BigBalls.

How in fuck this horrible child with an extremely problematic back story got a six figure job in the US government handling sensitive data is a story that only Elon Musk can tell you, and I am sure that he won’t.

Yeah, I saw that. I wish them good luck with that!

Also, the juvenile curfew zone either includes Nats Park or makes it extremely hard for kids to legally get to the park.  Or get to the Metro from it, since the games will end well after this juvenile curfew takes effect each evening.

FYI. The dustbin of history will be getting a little more crowded.

In the hazy impressions of memory, some may even recall it fondly: The AOL dial-up internet service that those of a certain age associate with the World Wide Web is coming to a close.
      [snip]
AOL, now part of Yahoo, said the dial-up service, along with the AOL Dialer software and AOL Shield browser, will be discontinued on Sept. 30. Source
