Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

When we show up, we win.

She burned that motherfucker down, and I am so here for it. Thank you, Caroline Kennedy.

Following reporting rules is only for the little people, apparently.

People really shouldn’t expect the government to help after they watched the GOP drown it in a bathtub.

They are not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

There is no right way to do the wrong thing.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

Let the trolls come, and then ignore them. that’s the worst thing you can do to a troll.

Also, are you sure you want people to rate your comments?

Trump’s cabinet: like a magic 8 ball that only gives wrong answers.

Come on, media. you have one job. start doing it.

Those who are easily outraged are easily manipulated.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

“The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits.”

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

The rest of the comments were smacking Boebert like she was a piñata.

This is dead girl, live boy, a goat, two wetsuits and a dildo territory.  oh, and pink furry handcuffs.

“Facilitate” is an active verb, not a weasel word.

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

Dear elected officials: Trump is temporary, dishonor is forever.

rich, arrogant assholes who equate luck with genius

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

President Musk and Trump are both poorly raised, coddled 8 year old boys.

So, anyone seen Trump since yesterday morning?

— Dana Houle (@danahoule.bsky.social) August 31, 2025 at 6:37 PM

===

I was like “fuck he’s fine” yesterday morning but subsequent lack of evidence has me wondering. like he’d make a point of saying something shitty to the press pool, no? that’s kind of his thing

— post malone ergo propter malone (@proptermalone.bsky.social) August 31, 2025 at 5:34 PM

===

The man has always scoured the horizon for cameras to put him on the idiot box. His staff couldnt stop him from running up to them if their lives depended on it. Since hes not, he probably feels how he looks. That and the security is keeping reporters bigfoot photo distance away.

you’ll know if the president buys the farm because really weird shit will start happening in the crypto markets out of nowhere at least three or four hours before anybody says anything publicly

So uh. Why isn't Trump getting in front of a camera?

Like the problem of being obsessed with being in front of the press is it's really really obvious when you are avoiding them.

Like I'm okay with he's an 80 year old and is tired and.maybe the bruise is bad on his hand or something.
But I'm gonna get real curious if he still is avoiding cameras after the labor day weekend

Just got done banging pots and pans for 5 minutes and yelling free DC. I think I need some new chants to go with the pot banging. It was a little light tonight – my neighborhood usually musters 5+ people out. Supposedly 50 people have showing up in Lincoln park which I noticed had national guard guys out today. I wish they weren’t caught up in this but it’s not ok for them to be here and they aren’t preventing crime.

Trump had an interview on Friday admitting his “diplomacy” with Putin was a dud.

We’re talking about a lot of lives. We’re not talking about something that I started,” Trump said. “I inherited this war. And all I’m trying to do is put out the flame, you know. And I thought I had it done.”

Trump again alleged that he had “seven times” ended other wars, which has been contested by several reports.

“I did it with wars that were tougher than this in terms of nobody,” he said. “So three of those wars are going on for more than 30 years, and I got them all done. This war is just, it’s been very difficult. It’s been a difficult war.”

The MAGA figurehead has consistently raged against critics of his Putin meeting for suggesting that it did nothing to move the Russian president toward peace.

Yet Trump now also seemed doubtful of a Putin and Zelensky face-to-face meeting and a timeline for peace between the two warring nations.

According to Trump, he hoped his “good relationship” with Putin would be enough to seal a deal but it wasn’t.

“That’s why I really thought we would have this done. I would have loved to have had it done,” he told Reese. “Maybe they have to fight a little longer. You know, just keep fighting. — stupidly, keep fighting.”

He ended all those other wars inside his head but ending a real war is difficult.  Huh.

Trump has zero filter anymore. So when he started openly pondering his place in the afterlife this week, my immediate thought is that he got some very not good news from this physicians. Starting to wonder whether his obsession with winning a Nobel Peace Prize has more to do with him thinking it provides instant admission through the Pearly Gates than besting Obama.

This post makes me realize it wouldn’t hurt to start planning ahead for the big day. Even if Trump makes it to the end of his term, he’s still going to die and there will still be celebration. I remember when Thatcher died, she’d been out of office for many years and there was much joy and celebration through England. Obviously a lot of pent-up emotion.

There won’t be much going on in my little subdivision, I think I’ll be heading downtown in my Stars and Stripes baseball cap and waving my little flag.

Among moments of happiness today is thinking that Donnie is going to die bitterly jealous of Obama because Donnie can’t possibly get the Nobel Peace Prize now.

President Donald Trump has lashed out at a subcontractor who cause a big mark on the stone of his brand new Mar-a-Lago DC party patio.

The Rose Garden is completed, and far more beautiful than anyone ever had in mind when it was conceived of, decades ago. Three days ago, while admiring the stonework, I happened to notice a huge gash in the limestone that extended more than 25 yards long.”

The gash, Trump said, was “deep and nasty,” and caused him to start yelling “‘Who did this, and I want to find out now!’ — And I didn’t say this in a nice manner. I wondered, ‘Was it vandalism or, was it stupidity?’

He continued: “Lo and behold, because of the fact that we’ve installed the finest security equipment anywhere, they brought back the stupid people, with their boss watching (in sunglasses!).”

The video shows two men transporting items on a heavy metal cart that appears tilted and slips, grazing the side of a “soft, beautiful” stone slab.

Soft, beautiful stone slab?  There’s your problem, Donald.

So there is a large cadre of elderly people who shake a lot of hands. So – are there any other instances of elderly people winding up with heavy bruising on the back of their hand caused by shaking a lot of hands?

And there are all those umbrella tables that creates the assumption that eating and drinking will take place there. Trump always boasts about being a capital b Builder, so you’d think he’d know that.

@Chacal Charles Calthrop: FFOTUS isn’t only stiffing contractors:

Donald Trump has reportedly gone out of his way to avoid paying national guard troops sent in to Washington, D.C., resulting in outrage from veterans.

The reports started earlier in the summer that Trump was utilizing a loophole when deploying the national guard, and avoiding paying those individuals certain additional benefits. In June, Vote In Or Out reported that “Trump deployed National Guard troops on multiple 29-day orders—specifically choosing durations under 30 days to avoid paying full Basic Allowance for Housing Type 1 (BAH‑1).”

“Under Title 32 regulations, if orders run fewer than 30 days, members receive only the reduced ‘BAH‑Type 2,’ not full BAH‑1; full benefits begin only on day 31 and only apply from that point forward—not retroactively,” the group wrote. “By repeatedly cycling short orders—ending them on day 29 and restarting on day 31—the administration saved roughly $2,500 per service member per month, based on differences between BAH‑Type 2 and BAH‑1.”

Now, there are rumors circulating from veterans on Reddit and other social media that it’s happening again.

Early Sunday morning, military analyst WarMonitor reported, “White House put DC National Guard on 29-day orders… 1 day short of 30 needed for full housing and health benefits.”

This is how the CO of the USA shows “respect” to “his” military.

Trump dying in office after Biden lived through his term would be such an indictment of the press.

Made “Biden Old” the top story, treating it as an uncovered secret, a scandal. Then lamented not covering it even more. All while treating “Trump Old” as a nonstory. Because he’s loud and lies a lot.

The really scandalous thing about the “Biden is Old” coverage is that, as bad as it got last year, it wasn’t nearly as irresponsible as the email stories about Clinton in 2016. Biden’s age would have been a legitimate issue if it weren’t for the fact that the quislings used it as a way to bury stories about Trump’s age, his criminality, and his platform. The emails scandal was made up out of whole cloth.

i went down to the DC mail this afternoon to see an exhibition at the National Gallery of Art  — Little Beasts, about European art of the small-scale natural world, connected with the development of the microscope.  Which I totally recommend to anyone in the area with children — many activities geared towards kids, especially FREE JOURNALS to encourage encounters with the Natural World.  Anyway, I saw many families, many happy tourists, and NO National Guards, armed persons, ICE, etc.  Maybe the feeling is that we artsie people aren’t dangerous, but anyway, it was calm and normal.  I was not anticipating normality — maybe that’s how the fascists get us.

I live in a federal program seniors complex, meaning one has to be over 55 to even rent here and there is someone 99 yrs old living here. I don’t know if she’s the oldest or not. And I’m about in the middle of the age bracket for those still here. Have lived here approximately 9 years and a few have gone and been replaced. Now I know a lot of the people that have been here for some time, but more than a few have come and gone. Most move to an actual healthcare facility as they get a lot older and can’t really care for themselves.

@Chetan Murthy: Turkiye developed pretty tight security during its 40-year war with the PKK. It would be a natural venue for a Putin/Zelensky meeting because it’s close to both their countries, and Turkiye already hosted two rounds of talks between Russian and Ukrainian delegations earlier this year in Istanbul.

At the last round, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan huddled with the delegation heads before the meeting. It was agreed that no progfess could be made, so the formal session consisted Fidan reading his own nation’s ceasefire proposal. It included an offer to station Turkish military monitors on the ceasefire lines.

I think the basic problem is that Putin wants a peace treaty that recognizes Russia’s territorial gains and even adds to them, while Ukraine wants a ceasefire in place without ratifying any Russian land thefts. Also, Putin does not want to meet Zelensky under circumstances that imply the two men are equals

Ed. But Russia and Ukraine can work up and ratify a treaty without Putin and Zelensky meeting. Their foreign ministers can sign it. A Putin/Zelensky meeting might be counterproductive because the two men hate each other.

Far different than the electronics that we see today, like your cell phone, or the computer I’m using right now. Now the difference between then and now in electronics is still hugely significant. Take your cell phone. I haven’t had a land line in 30 years, other than my business. But if you know the difference in electronics over the decades from when I was in the USN over half a century ago, you’d know it is very significantly different. Even if it was solid state.

More than 1.2 million immigrants disappeared from the labor force from January through the end of July, according to preliminary Census Bureau data analyzed by the Pew Research Center. That includes people who are in the country illegally as well as legal residents.

Immigrants make up almost 20% of the U.S. workforce and that data shows 45% of workers in farming, fishing and forestry are immigrants, according to Pew senior researcher Stephanie Kramer. About 30% of all construction workers are immigrants and 24% of service workers are immigrants, she added.

The loss in immigrant workers comes as the nation is seeing the first decline in the overall immigrant population after the number of people in the U.S. illegally reached an all-time high of 14 million in 2023.

“It’s unclear how much of the decline we’ve seen since January is due to voluntary departures to pursue other opportunities or avoid deportation, removals, underreporting or other technical issues,” Kramer said. “However, we don’t believe that the preliminary numbers indicating net-negative migration are so far off that the decline isn’t real.”

Trump campaigned on a promise to deport millions of immigrants working in the U.S. illegally. He has said he is focusing deportation efforts on “dangerous criminals,” but most people detained by ICE have no criminal convictions. At the same time, the number of illegal border crossings has plunged under his policies.

Pia Orrenius, a labor economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, said immigrants normally contribute at least 50% of job growth in the U.S.

“The influx across the border from what we can tell is essentially stopped, and that’s where we were getting millions and millions of migrants over the last four years,” she said. “That has had a huge impact on the ability to create jobs.”
