Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Republican also-rans: four mules fighting over a turnip.

The line between political reporting and fan fiction continues to blur.

Usually wrong but never in doubt

Weird. Rome has an American Pope and America has a Russian President.

Jack be nimble, jack be quick, hurry up and indict this prick.

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

The fundamental promise of conservatism all over the world is a return to an idealized past that never existed.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

Consistently wrong since 2002

We will not go back.

Cancel the cowardly Times and Post and set up an equivalent monthly donation to ProPublica.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

Their freedom requires your slavery.

Many life forms that would benefit from greater intelligence, sadly, do not have it.

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

When tyranny becomes law, rebellion becomes duty. ~Thomas Jefferson

You passed on an opportunity to be offended? What are you even doing here?

People are complicated. Love is not.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

Tick tock motherfuckers!

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

I can’t believe he’s literally just having trashy provincial country club parties. The tragedy is that he doesn’t even drink, so he’s kind of SIMULATING a key scene of Trashy Rich White Culture without really understanding what powers it.

Like in that pic you are SUPPOSED to be six old fashioneds deep, talking about the fall sales push and leering at Dale’s wife. Trump gets the posturing and leering instinctively but not the vast welcoming oceans of alcohol it all drifts along on. Sad!

Swear to Murphy, there is nothing Trump can’t debase — but poorly. He has imagination of a not-very-bright nine year old with a comic book addiction: bright colors, bold graphics, exclamation points. Explosions! Bam! Pow!

there is nothing they cannot bring low

Jesus Christ, what profound disrespect to Abraham Lincoln, the man who freed the slaves, and kept the Union together. It’s bad enough the shit Trump is doing to the WH, but this is obscene. That’s a memorial to honor a president who was slain by an assassin

To be fair, Lincoln also had a broad streak of Rural White Trash in his makeup — he enjoyed filthy jokes and ‘rassling.  But he knew that such things were inappropriate for the man in the White House, a distinction Mr. Born-in-A-Gilded-Subdivision Trump has never grasped.

      History 🧵 from Seth Cotlar:

For most Americans, the date 1913 means nothing. For Americans on the far right fringes, 1913 has long been a date of great significance. Here’s a piece from the antisemitic rag “American Mercury” in 1957, for example. One of their writers at the time was George Lincoln Rockwell. …

      Relevant these days because:

Trump: “If you go back to 1913 is when they ended tariffs. We were the richest ever from 1850 — it was all tariffs, we didn’t have income taxes — from 1850 to 1913 … we were the richest we ever were proportionately we were in 1887, around that time.”

History is not his strong suit. (emphasis mine)

Between 1863 and 1913, eight banking panics occurred in the money center of Manhattan. The panics in 1884, 1890, 1899, 1901, and 1908 were confined to New York and nearby cities and states. The panics in 1873, 1893, and 1907 spread throughout the nation. Regional panics also struck the midwestern states of Illinois, Minnesota, and Wisconsin in 1896; the mid-Atlantic states of Pennsylvania and Maryland in 1903; and Chicago in 1905. Source

Unemployment nationwide rose to nearly 20% in the wake of the Panic of 1893 and by 1895 the U.S. Treasury was on the brink of collapse.

This is actually a misconception. At least going by Silver’s aggregate, Trump’s popularity hit a floor when people started talking about Epstein again and it hasn’t gotten any lower–in fact, it’s recovered a tiny bit lately; I think his base like the incipient-civil-war threats:
