Sen. Ruben Gallego: "Ashli Babbitt was a traitor. She was a traitor to this country. She was part of a violent mob that tried to overthrow our democracy…She didn't die protecting our country. She died trying to turn it down…She wasn't a martyr. She was and is a traitor."

Sen. Ruben Gallego: "Today we had a chance to stand with the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for this country in uniform. Ashli Babbitt is not that. She is a traitor. She will be a traitor. She died a traitor."

Former Marine Gallego’s brave move got largely overlooked yesterday, for some reason. Per the Military Times, “Senate Democrat Tries to Formally Condemn Funeral Honors for Ashli Babbitt”:

Senate Republicans on Wednesday blocked a Democratic effort to put the upper chamber on record opposing the Trump administration’s decision to grant military funeral honors to Air Force veteran and Jan. 6 rioter Ashli Babbitt.

Sen. Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz., went to the Senate floor Wednesday afternoon to request what’s known as “unanimous consent” to pass a resolution that would have stated the Senate believes Babbitt is not eligible for military funeral honors.

But Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., objected to Gallego’s request, thereby blocking the resolution from passing.

“Ashli Babbit was a traitor,” Gallego, a Marine Corps veteran, said on the Senate floor. “She didn’t die protecting our country. She died trying to tear it down.

“Military honors are sacred,” he continued. “They are reserved for the men and women who swore an oath to support and defend the Constitution and the rule of law, and actually live up to it. To give them to Babbitt would be a spit in the face to all of them and to every veteran who died defending this country.”…

Babbitt was part of a mob of President Donald Trump’s supporters who attacked the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, in an effort to overturn former President Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 election.

She was fatally shot by a Capitol Police officer as she tried to climb through a shattered window that leads to the Speaker’s Lobby, a restricted hallway just outside the House floor. At the time, lawmakers were barricaded inside the chamber as they tried to find a way to evacuate.

The officer who shot Babbitt was cleared of any wrongdoing, but Babbitt’s supporters have cast her as a martyr…

The resolution Gallego filed Wednesday would have formally stated that the Senate believes “Ashli Babbitt’s actions on January 6, 2021, constitute disqualifying conduct under section 985 of Title 10, United States Code; the rendering of military funeral honors to her would bring discredit upon the Air Force; and she is not eligible for such honors.”

The section of U.S. Code cited in the resolution disqualifies veterans from military funeral honors if they are convicted of a capital crime, were found to have committed a capital crime but can’t be convicted because they died, or died in circumstances that “would bring discredit upon the person’s service.”

Gallego’s resolution also would have said the Senate “rejects efforts to glorify or legitimize the actions of those who sought to overturn the Constitution of the United States.”

Useful reminder, if needed:

Ashli Babbitt was a terrorist. www.nbcsandiego.com/news/local/a…

Which branch of the military did Tommy Tuberville serve in? According to his Wikipedia, that would be none. But the article includes the military as one of his interests. What??

Happy the man – c5-c6 fusion went well and felt better almost immediately. Having some difficulty with swallowing and talking, which are normal and temporary side effect (steroids for those). I am quite sure that any difficulty in speech for me can only be seen as a blessing by any number of people.

Edit: speak no ill of the dead. Charlie Kirk is dead. Not sorry though I deplore the violence.

Gun Violence To ‘China Virus’: A Look At Charlie Kirk’s Controversial Takes

It is hard to find Charlie Kirk quotes even though lots are searching!

On Gun control: In 2023, Kirk said that gun deaths were “worth it” to ensure the preservation of Second Amendment rights in the US– which is the right to keep and bear arms.

“It’s worth it to have a cost of, unfortunately, some gun deaths every single year, so that we can have the Second Amendment to protect our other God-given rights…That is a prudent deal,” he said during an appearance at the Salt Lake City campus of Awaken Church on April 5, 2023.

Ironically, Kirk was answering a question about gun violence when he was shot dead.

On Civil Rights: In another 2023 event, Kirk had called civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr “awful” and “not a good person” as he decried the Civil Rights Act of 1965, which outlawed discrimination based on race, religion, colour, sex and national origin, and prohibited segregation.

“I have a very, very radical view on this, but I can defend it, and I’ve thought about it,” Kirk said. “We made a huge mistake when we passed the Civil Rights Act in the 1960s,” he said at a December 2023 political conference hosted by his Turning Points USA group. He claimed that the law ushered in a “permanent” bureaucracy meant to promote diversity, equity and inclusion.

Conspiracy Theories: In March 2020, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the right-wing activist posted about the “China virus” – a phrase that was later adopted by President Trump in his first term.

In a 2021 interview with Tucker Carlson, Kirk also reportedly compared pandemic vaccine requirements to apartheid. In a February 2024 Instagram post, he also talked about the “great replacement” — a widely debunked conspiracy theory– suggesting undocumented immigrants entering the United States to replace white Americans.

Provocative Remarks: Kirk was known for provocative statements on race that he used to court Gen Z voters.

“I’m sorry. If I see a Black pilot, I’m going to be like, ‘Boy, I hope he’s qualified,'” Kirk said during a 2024 podcast episode with fellow rightwing activist Jack Posobeic.

Kirk staunchly opposed the enactment of Juneteenth as a federal holiday. He said the move to elevate the date was motivated by “anti-American” sentiment that promoted “a neo-segregationist view” that he claimed sought to supplant Independence Day.

      About Charlie Kirk
Kirk was 18 years old when he co-founded Turning Point in suburban Chicago in 2012 with William Montgomery, a Tea Party activist. They aimed to take their ideas for low taxes and limited government to college campuses. Turning Point enthusiastically backed Trump after he clinched the GOP nomination for president in 2016. Kirk served as a personal aide to the then-candidate’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., during the general election campaign.

The Trump connection helped fuel Turning Point’s rise to prominence. Soon, Kirk was a regular presence on cable TV, where he leaned into the culture wars and heaped praise on the president.

State Department warns immigrants not to mock Kirk’s death

The State Department on Thursday indicated it would review the legal status of immigrants “praising, rationalizing, or making light” of conservative activist Charlie Kirk’s fatal shooting.

First they came for the pro-Palestinian protesters, blah blah blah.

Also, did y’all watch the four-minute video Trump recorded in the Oval Office last night? Kirk is his Horst Wessel and Reichstag Fire all rolled into one.

The lunatic shitposters like Rufo, Loomer, Miller, Musk, the Federalist douchebags, etc., are baying for blood, which is not unusual, but now many of them directly wield state power.

It’s such a weird time because as scary as all that potentially is, there’s also the possibility that these morons will lose focus or shoot their own dicks off. In a way, it feels like being stalked by a particular dumb pack of would-be serial killers.

Rep I never heard of blames everybody but Kirk. Also works in Democrat Party[sic].

Rep. Derrick Van Orden (R-WI) castigated members of the media this morning, saying “every one of you” is responsible for Charlie Kirk’s death for “echoing the horrifically horrible political violent rhetoric produced by the Democrat Party,” the Washington Examiner reports.

Bob Onder (R, MO) did not get the memo that Stalin in now A-OK. The rest of you commies all did this.

Rep. Bob Onder (R-MO) raised eyebrows on Thursday with a House floor speech on the killing of Charlie Kirk, in which he claimed Americans on the left “embrace the evil, the false, and ugly,” Mediaite reports.

Onder went so far as to say his fellow citizens across the aisle “literally will kill those with whom they disagree, just as their predecessors—leftists Marx, and Stalin, and Lenin, and Pol Pot, and Fidel Castro—did.”

I’m going to go ahead and believe that Trump had a stroke recently. It might not be true, but there are no downsides to saying it and getting it out there.

Either he’s had a stroke, is on a definite downswing, and likely to be dead as a doornail before the year is out, which if it happens is all well and good. Or he’s had a minor stroke or other health issue, but will linger on for years, in which case he will suffer enormously, the watching of which will have its own pleasures. Or he’s fine, in which case he is lucid enough to get angry at hearing all of these rumours about his health, which is perfect, don’t you know?

A best case scenario for Trump at this point is that he is still healthy enough to throw ketchup at the fake gold crap on the walls, so in the event that this is the case, everyone should try to make sure that he is angry and miserable enough to throw it.

SALT LAKE CITY—Alarmed by numerous reports that the vice president was currently en route to the state, sources confirmed Thursday that a visit from JD Vance was the last thing Utah needed right now. “We’re already going through a lot, but to add JD Vance on top of everything else?” said one Utah resident, who pleaded for anyone with contacts in the vice president’s office to put a stop to his trip immediately. “Ugh, the last few days have been really hard. And suddenly we’ve got JD Vance coming to Utah. Now whose idea was that? It’s been utter chaos here, and now they just want to rub salt in the wound.” At press time, Arizona had reportedly volunteered to pretend to be Utah.

Public figure #1: (commenting on president trump’s video last night, quickly blaming Charlie Kirk’s murder on ‘the radical left’): “They have not caught the assailant. There is no public understanding of who this individual is or what their motives were. And for any politician to use rhetoric of vengeance and violence, whether a member of Congress or the President is absolutely irresponsible.”

Public figure #2: (commenting on the attacker of former U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband, Paul Pelosi): “Why has he not been bailed out? By the way, if some amazing patriot out there in San Francisco or the Bay Area wants to really be a midterm hero, someone should go and bail this guy out.”

Which one was calling for an end to political violence, and which one was cheering it on? Who do you identify with?

I think I’m going to do a lot more of these…it’ll be eye-opening to many, to say the least.

Since the MAGAts like “free speech” and “debate” so much…let’s see where they land when they don’t have the benefit of a much-praised (or maligned) name attached to a quote, or a Fox News commentator to tell them who to hate

If South Korea did assembly machines the way the US does weapons, they would have remote kill switches installed.

Or if they’re subtler than the US, they’d have remote-controlled malware a la Stuxnet to cause occasional, damaging but non-traceable glitches. After all it’s not their fault that American workers don’t maintain the machines property, and it’s no longer safe for them to sent their repair techs here…. Or maybe it was the North Koreans, America companies really should do better with their cybersecurity amirite….

@Elizabelle: The audience member who asked about trans mass shooters asked a follow-up question about how many mass shooters there have been, which Kirk was trying to turn into a racist thing by saying that gang shootings should make the number a lot higher.  His last 2 words before the shot were “gang violence.”

      @Baud:

Trump’s face appeared noticeably drooped on one side during the 9/11 ceremony

Definitely diagnosis at a distance here, from a non-medical professional, but my dad died of Lewy body dementia earlier this year. In his last few months, before he got really badly ill, his face often drooped lopsidedly like that, but not all the time, and he would lose focus and his head move around weirdly. The similarities in comportment really struck me in that clip.

@Elizabelle: ETA to say I agree. I hope it is not augmented; it is a risk nowadays.

404 Media in response to Ezra Klein’s opinion piece (of shit)

Charlie Kirk Was Not Practicing Politics the Right Way

This does not mean Kirk deserved to die or that political violence is ever justified. What happened to Kirk is horrifying, and we fear deeply for whatever will happen next. But it is undeniable that Kirk was not just a part of the extremely tense, very dangerous national dialogue, he was an accelerationist force whose work to dehumanize LGBTQ+ people and threaten the free speech of professors, teachers, and school board members around the country has directly put the livelihoods and physical safety of many people in danger. We do no one any favors by ignoring this, even in the immediate aftermath of an assassination like this.

OK.  Kirk’s last word was indeed “violence.”

NY Times has footage; does not include the injury and flying blood.

Young man questioning him from audience:

“Do you know how many mass shooters there have been in America in the last 10 years?”

Kirk:  “Counting, or not counting, gang violence?’ — BANG.

@Shalimar:  Yes. That clip is up on the NY Times website right now and you don’t seem to be able to stop the video playing.

And yes.  His last sentence spoken on earth.  Was setting up a lie.

I refuse to take this more seriously or reverently than the investigative team or the actual attendees:
      In summary:

This Mormon tiktok influencer livestreamed and self promoted himself and Mormonism with his selfie stick while people are screaming and running.
After he finished filming, he stole the blood soaked merch to sell on Ebay and left his fingerprints all over an active crime scene.

@Baud: Not just HBCUs. Via Wired: Right-Wing Activists Are Targeting People for Allegedly Celebrating Charlie Kirk’s Death

Far-right influencers and violent extremists are posting identifying details about people they view as celebrating or glorifying the murder of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk. The campaign has been swift and widespread and has already led to at least one person losing their job and others receiving death threats. The people posting the identifying information include Chaya Raichik, who runs the hugely influential, hate-filled LibsofTikTok account on X, Trump-whisperer Laura Loomer, and former Proud Boy leader Enrique Tarrio.

A central hub of this activity is a website called Charlie’s Murderers, which was registered in the early evening on the day Kirk was shot and is revealing certain personal information, such as social media usernames and email addresses, of individuals the operators believe were celebrating the horrific murder. Independent journalist Rachel Gilmore has received multiple death and rape threats since the site went live on Wednesday evening.

As you’d expect most of the posts/people being targeted didn’t  celebrate Kirk’s death, but merely expressed concern over the potential MAGA reaction.

If you’re on social media, now is a good time to lock down your accounts, if you’re still on Twitter, set your account to private. Bluesky posts are always public, but you can change settings to:

Prevent your posted from being seen by people who aren’t signed-in to Bluesky (not foolproof because it relies on 3rd party sites respecting this.
Turn off quote posting (i.e. someone reposting and quoting your post)
Limit who can reply to your post—I set mine to only people following me, people I follow, people I mention in my posts (which I rarely do anyway).

And if you haven’t already done so, be sure to enable two-factor verification for signing in.

Can always relax these later, but doesn’t hurt to lower your exposure at the moment.

@prostratedragon: I’ll be touring the royal yacht in October. The tour we’re taking starts in Edinburgh but oddly doesn’t actually tour Edinburgh, so we’re arriving a few days early so we can tour the city and the yacht is definitely on our list.

It is astounding to me that one dumbfuck redneck from Alabama in the Senate can single-handedly block legislation, but the entire Democratic leadership can’t.
