Delays expected at airports as government shutdown drags on

Airports are experiencing massive staffing shortages because of the Trump shutdown.
House Republicans remain on vacation.
Get back to work so we can reopen the government!

Look, it’s not as though Trump — or any of his inner circle of donors & minions — are going to be inconvenienced in the least by air traffic delays. Our Very Serious Media Pundits, however, mostly still fly commercial!

Funny how the media turns on the GOP riiiigghhhtt about the time they detonate safe flights.

As do most legislators, especially (I’m guessing) House members, who have to fly a lot!

The airports are beginning to shut down due to lack of staffing. Some VIP will be inconvenienced and this will end.

UNREAL there were no air traffic controllers at Burbank Airport amid the government shutdown.

If ‘a slight uptick’ in the number of workers calling in sick can shut down a dozen airports, Secretary Duffy, maybe you’re not doing your job.

A dozen facilities saw air traffic control shortages on Monday, delaying flights at several airports. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy blamed "a slight tick-up in sick calls" due to the shutdown.

The cartoon plane was prescient:

Yeah, SCOTUS has kind of made their bed here. There's no reason for the democrats to give up anything while SCOTUS allows impoundments and recissions.

— Schnorkles O'Bork (@schnorkles.bsky.social) October 2, 2025 at 11:13 AM

One of the most important parts of RW online brain is the idea that only they have agency and everyone else is just NPCs. You see this in the Trump admin with their inability to think through consequences.

Such as: do you want planes to work? You’re going to have problems soon.

Remember each of the last shutdowns have basically ended as soon as it became clear air traffic control was about to buckle.

Cut off money through targets and recessions. Okay. If the blue states cease transferring money all at once, the federal government collapses.

There are a very small group of people who actually do complicated horse trading in their brains about politics: beltway types, political reporters, actual people in congress (some), and the sickos.jpeg that inhabit this website.

Everyone else? Not at all. The long and short of this is that democrats should -always- pick shut down fights, because they’ll always win them in the public opinion sphere.

Republicans are the party of anti-governance, democrats are the technocrats, they literally can’t lose here.

Within a week, you’re going to see stories from R’s saying things like “I wanted them to cut fraud, waste, and abuse, not ” The GOP literally cannot win a shutdown fight being what it is. The only people who have convinced themselves they can is the beltway.

If you find yourself thinking “but R’s said this, and D’s said this, and it’s not clear that the media will side with-” stop, just stop.

You’re already forty steps ahead of the normal person. All they’ll think is “huh, the government is shut down, wonder why the republicans did that”

Remember all those air traffic controllers who were dismissed because of “woke hiring practices”? I knew this was going to come back & bite them. I just didn’t expect it to happen like this.

I also wonder if TSA is back to their IDGAF mode like the last shutdown.

Hey, folks. I’m writing up some stuff. I need “toothbrush tasks without a whipping.”
Why? I have a list of nice things. I could use new nice things, things other people think of.

Please note, the point of the essay is “my life sucks, because it’s hard to find a pleasant time to do an unpleasant chore like brushing my teeth, when all I need is roughly the energy you need to do X.” But it hits harder, the more powerful the “this could be lost,” moment is.
      (Essay begins)

When do I brush my teeth? When I don’t have to “or else” my inner child with a whipping. When I have the energy for a short task, without a self-imposed threat forcing me, in other words.
I do it when you might stop to chat with a coworker about nothing important.
I do it when you might pet a cat or dog.
I do it when you might stop by your spouse or partner, and say “I love you” in word or gesture.
I do it when you might comfort your little scared mew-mew kitty, without irritation, because there’s always time to comfort a scared mew-mew kitty. (Do other people sometimes get irritated with constant mew-mew demands?)
I’d do it when you might pre-prep for a fine meal you’d like to cook.
I’d do it when you might start the cooking for that fine meal.
I’d do it when you might check on, or work on, that fine meal, because nothing else is more important.
I do it when you might have time to realize you’ll need to go to the bathroom soon, but without actual physical urgency, because you were relaxed enough to pay attention to the signals.
I do it when you you might give your child an especially warm hug, or if they’re young, blow a raspberry on their belly, and they’d go “DAD!” or “MOM!” and you’d adore their embarrassment at your affection.
I do it when you might tell a lover to slip off for a quick round of kissing and petting-promises of more tonight.
I do it in lieu of trying to make a connection with another person… that will be another “toothbrush task” I must worry about!

And if it’s hard to find a time, for a toothbrushing task, without a whipping, then it’s that much harder to find the time for all of these things.

I agree with most of this post, and definitely with the Dems’ strategy, making deals with Trump/GOP is insane, given the impoundments.  There is a problem with Doucette’s post, though: there’s no mechanism for blue states to withhold tax money, people pay taxes individually.  This is a lib fantasy and we really need to stop spreading it.

Remember – working stiffs should be willing to work for free for a while so that deci and centibillionaires can enjoy tax-free lives of luxury, because that’s how they’re motivated to keep billionairing.

It’s Axios, but I like this shift in reporting.

Mike Johnson faces growing internal revolt over shutdown

The longer the government stays shut down, the shorter House Republicans’ patience seems to be getting with Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.).

      Why it matters:
Johnson’s decision to keep his chamber on an indefinite break in the middle of a government shutdown isn’t sitting well with some in his conference — and that could put pressure on the speaker to change course.

From frustration over the stalled vote on releasing the Jeffrey Epstein files, to questions about whether — as Johnson argues — the chamber really has no business to attend to in Washington, GOP lawmakers are beginning to get antsy.

Upping the temperature: Unless Congress passes Rep. Jen Kiggans’ (R-Va.) bill to ensure military paychecks keep flowing, troops are set to start missing paychecks on Oct. 15.

What they’re saying: Being home in their districts hasn’t stoped some GOP lawmakers from airing their frustrations.

“I’m urging the Speaker and our House leadership to immediately pass my bill to ensure our service members, many of whom live paycheck to paycheck while supporting their families, receive the pay they’ve earned.” Kiggans told Axios in a statement after Johnson ruled out bringing her bill up for a vote next week.

Kiggans is a tool.  Pay the military but nobody else is classic (R) dodging bullshit when it comes to the realities of a gubmint shutdown.

Maybe she has studied history (highly unlikely) and remembers how we dodged a similar bullet in 1783:

      mountvernon.org/library/digitalhistory/digital-encyclopedia/article/newburgh-conspiracy

When a similarly feckless legislative body wasn’t gonna pay the military.  Washington’s shining career moment was during that threat.  I digress.

I seem to recall some Air Traffic Controllers deciding that private jets were a low priority and could just circle the airport for a few hours. Maybe I was dreaming? Maybe it was during the last Trump shutdown? Maybe it was just Elon’s jet after DOGE turned its attention to the FAA?

Hmmmm.  Another “routine yearly check-up” at Walter Reed?

White House press Secretary  Karoline Leavitt said in a statement that President Trump will meet with “the troops” at Walter Reed Medical Center on Friday and then “stop by for his routine yearly check up.”

Trump already underwent what was described as his annual physical examination at the famed military hospital earlier on April 11. A memo released by White House physician Sean Barbabella two days later said he was in “excellent health” with “robust cardiac, pulmonary, neurological, and general physical function.”

Leavitt’s statement said that, after the exam on Friday, Trump will “return to the White House” and is “considering going to the Middle East shortly thereafter.”

It would be not difficult for a Governor to instruct a state treasurer to open a new escrow account and make businesses licensed in the state submit their state and federal  tax collection payments for batching. It’s an update of the routing and account numbers for ADP and Paychex at the state level. Not insurmountable for a determined group of governors who have grown weary of their states being punching bags.

@Scout211: Just checking Google for air travel requiring doctor approval:

      1. Infectious Diseases
If you have a contagious illness like influenza, chickenpox, measles, or another infectious disease, you should avoid flying until you’ve fully recovered and your doctor has given clearance. Not only can flying worsen your symptoms, but you risk infecting other passengers in a closed cabin environment.
      2. Late-Stage Pregnancy
Airlines often restrict travel for passengers in the final weeks of pregnancy. Flying during late pregnancy can increase the risk of blood clots due to reduced mobility and cabin pressure changes. Always check airline policies and consult your doctor before booking a flight.
      3. Heart Conditions
Recent heart attack, stroke, uncontrolled heart failure, or severe chest pain at rest are strong reasons to avoid flying. Cabin pressure, high altitude, and reduced oxygen levels can put significant strain on your cardiovascular system.
      4. Respiratory Diseases
Any lung condition—whether chronic (like COPD) or temporary—can make air travel dangerous. If you experience shortness of breath at rest, you may struggle in the lower-oxygen environment of an airplane cabin. Some passengers can fly with supplemental oxygen if their doctor approves.
      5. Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
DVT occurs when a blood clot forms in a deep vein, usually in the legs. Prolonged sitting and reduced mobility during a flight can increase clotting risks, and cabin pressure changes can make the condition worse.
      6. Unstable Mental Health Conditions
While many passengers with psychiatric disorders can travel safely, flying may be risky if symptoms are currently unstable. In some cases, an escort or special accommodations are required.

      1. Possible

      2. Probably not

      3. Possible Probable

      4. Probable

      5. Definitely

      6. Definitely

ETA: So we’ll see if he can fly to the Middle East or if the doctors say no.  But his appointment at Walter Reed is definitely not a routine check-up.

Too many guys in that situation go all “it’s got a hole, I’ll plug it,” but with the unicorn, it’s not just being hung like a literal stallion… there’s the horn!

I didn’t say the fear, or the ICE agents, were rational.

I just got a news alert indicating that Israel and Hamas have a deal of a hostage and prisoner release, and that Israel will pull back troops out of Gaza . God willing. The hostages need to be freed, and the people of Gaza need peace and aid urgently.

@They Call Me Blue: @Anyway: my understanding is that he’s a total placeholder, selected for the position in substantial part precisely BECAUSE he has no real strength.  Hence it doesn’t matter much what he knows or doesn’t, what he wants or doesn’t.  He uses the power of the Speaker’s office — which in the House is pretty much supreme, since the days of Gingrich — to do the MAGA thing and mouth the MAGA noises, and the multi headed MAGA beast does as the Orange Oracle commands.

I agree it might be instructive for Teh Mediaz to take him to task publicly, but I think they know the score and see no value to their careers or their employers’ interests in doing so.

      — Alienated young male 4chan / Discord / name-yer-poison denizen latches on to rightwing screeching about judge, decides to do something Really Big to get himself Noticed.

      — Facts of investigation are subsumed in national political debate, which in turn subtly distorts both investigation and prosecution.

      — Media spectacle erupts when suspect arrested and again at key points in indictment and trial.

      — Following conviction, Trump or SC Governor issues pardon.

Of course, it might have been an accident.  But ooh boy what a coincidence …

Late to this, but do you all know about FlightAware’s “Misery Map”? It’s a graphical portrayal of how well or poorly the US flight system is going, in real time, at the top ~30 US airports.

One way to add a little pressure to useless toadstool (and generally stupid person) Sean Duffy would be as the map turns redder and redder at busy and f’ed up times, post screenshots to your favorite media apps. With some choice words about how Duffy, Johnson and Thune messed this up for you.

Also if you personally are delayed or cancelled by this crap, say so on BookaFaces or where ever else your crabby MAGA-adjacent relatives might hang out.

      Heh!

Another U.S. attorney under President Donald Trump’s Justice Department has failed to get an indictment from a grand jury, although this time it was in Chicago, not Washington, D.C.

A federal grand jury refused to indict a couple carrying firearms while protesting at the Broadview ICE facility outside Chicago. Republicans have been the main political party that has opposed any restrictions or regulations on firearms, but U.S. Attorney Andrew Boutros‘ office went after them as “armed rioters.” The office has since asked that the charges be dismissed.

The couple is part of a group of protesters taken by federal agents while protesting. A third person also had his charges dropped when new footage was revealed showing the encounter.

“The three are among more than a dozen protesters arrested and charged by federal agents since late last month, according to court records,” reported the site Block Club Chicago.

That’s when the Israelis will begin releasing the 250 “security prisoners” they are are trading for them, plus almost 2,000 other detainees.

Now Trump’s talking about flying over to address Israel’s Knesset. He might stop in Cairo too. It was Egyptian President al-Sisi who really pushed this agreement through.

“The video, by Parente’s account, doesn’t show a militant activist with a gun; it shows an agent losing his temper, cursing at a woman through a windshield, then firing point-blank. That’s not self-defense—it’s vengeance with a badge.”

Federal Agents Storm South Shore Building, Detaining Families and Children

Families were woken by flashbangs and helicopters as hundreds of federal agents raided their homes. Days later, neighbors are still searching for the missing.

Most of us know of the event, but,………….

The building was purchased by Wisconsin-based investor Trinity Flood in January 2020, according to Cook County records. On October 1, the day after the raid, a judge reviewed an emergency motion from Wells Fargo seeking to appoint Matthew Tarshis of Frontline Real Estate Partners as the property’s receiver.

Flood purchased three multifamily properties in South Shore in 2020. The neighborhood, which had the highest number of eviction filings in Chicago from 2015-2019 according to the Law Center for Better Housing, has seen a rise in outside real estate investors since the 2017 announcement of the Obama Presidential Center’s construction in the neighboring Jackson Park.

Wells Fargo Bank foreclosed on the building in mid-2024, bringing a $27 million lawsuit against Flood for missed loan payments. In late 2024, the City began closing its largest migrant shelters and, through state funding assistance distributed via Catholic Charities and moving support from New Life Church, relocated many families to buildings such as this one.

There is much, much more to the story which South Side Chicago is digging into.

Suspicions are that the mass raid and deliberate destruction was not just a “staged event” for ICE to create terror, but also as a means for Wells Fargo to make a mass illegal eviction.

@Melancholy Jaques: The anti-50 ads have changed. They’ve gone from Arnold Schwarzenegger’s anti politicians ad to “Gavin Newsom wants to be president we need to stop him!”

They’ve also stopped claiming that Prop 50 will abolish the non-partisan Redistricting Commission.  Perhaps because “temporary” occurs so prominently, even in the summary — which is all most people read.
