    I just got back from the grocery store. I dont shop there often, having a GF who cooks most of the time….but holy SHIT, prices are outrageous. I’ve long heard the stories, but I chalked it up to hyperbole and such.

    The next few years we are going to ‘reap the whirlwind’ as 30 years of Reaganomics and Democratic spinelessness come due. It’s not going to get any better. Can’t ask other people to go back to living in huts so our prices stay stable, although under McCain maybe we’ll try to bomb them back there. Don’t know if it’s kosher to plug other blogs, but Angrybear and The Big Picture are excellent economics blogs, with excellent blogrolls for more info.

    It’s not obvious to me why suppor for Obama requires me to hate Hillary or why so many Hillary supporters feel it’s necessary to confect frantically futile failed smears against Obama . Hillary Clinton has her heart in the right place and she’s done as good a job in the Senate of promoting progressive legislation as anyone could have, given the fact that until just last year she was in the minority party and mostly locked out of the senatorial committee chairmanships etc.

    I hope when this is all over, Hillary goes back to the senate and does as good a job as she’s done there heretofore. Yes, the Clintons’ time is over, but Bill and Hillary still have a lot of valuable skills and enthusiasm to contribute to the Democratic party. And, no, I don’t think Hillary is hurting the party or Obama with her current attacks…she’s only hurting herself. The spectacle of seeing her booed on the campaign is truly painful.

    Some folks have tried to slam either Hillary or Obama on hteir legislative record (notably the vile Dick Morris, who needs to go back to sucking whores’ toes) but if you compare their records, they’re reasonably comparable, except that Obama has gotten significantly more legislation passed than HIllary has.
    Obama seems to have the edge in terms of solidly progressive legislation he’s introduced, but here again, it varies from one area of public policy to concern to another — Hillary has been much more assiduous about introducing health care legislation than Obama, while Obama has introduced many more pieces of legislation to deal with global warming than she has. I just don’t see an overwhelming difference between Hillary and Obama as far as their legislative records go, aside from Obama’s greater success at sponsoring or co-consporing laws that get passed into law. They’re both solid progressive Democrats and they both have solid records in the senate of promoting progressive causes like health care, poverty, curbing predatory loans and increasing government transprancy. These are simply not legislative concerns you see from the right wing members of the senate — at all. Period. The right just doesn’t care about this stuff. Hillary and Obama do, and they’ve worked hard to further progressive causes in the senate.

    As people sick of the corrupt warmongering and lies and theocratic rapture lunacy that misnames itself “conservatism” today, we’re all in this together. It seems to me that we really need to stand back and take a deep breath and recognize that the big task is not making sure our particular preferred Democratic primary candidate gets the nomination (mine is Obama, but if Hillary wins, I’ll gladly support and vote for her). The big task we face right now is restoring the constitution to our country. End torture, bring back habeas corpus, force the executive branch to obey the law, no more wars of aggression started by means of lies, no more extraordinary rendition. We need to make America back into America. The rest is just a sideshow.

    To be fair, it looks like that’s posited as the last possible scenario, in the case of a cholera epidemic or other catastrophe that threatens beyond the border. And I suspect they’re thinking of UN peacekeepers or the like.

    That said, I think some of the other less extreme options sound interesting. Go ahead and airdrop the supplies to the people, if they have to.

    I don’t really see why everybody is so upset over this, it seems perfectly reasonable to me.

    Look at it this way— there are approximately 550 million people in S.E. Asia, BUT, only some 200 million of them are Muslim, so its not like we’re going to be pissing off the majority of the population or anything like we did in Iraq and the Middle East.

    Now I know some might say that we run the risk of alienating the 1.3 billion people that live in China, but WTF, 90% of those people are too busy putting poison in our dog food and lead paint on our children’s toys to pay much attention to minor shit like this.

    Additionally, I’m confident that our leaders have learned the lessons of their miscalculations in Iraq and could easily accomplish the mission with a minimum of fuss and bother.

    I say we go for it, let’s shoot the whole wad. Those people need our help.

    As my friends know well, I have been a stout defender of Hillary Clinton’s campaign from the very beginning, while maintaining my admiration for Barack Obama. (In the most recent case, I was impressed by the fact that Obama refused to rise to the bait, while she accepted the hypothetical and ran with it.) I respected the depth of her politically skilled network, her grit and determination, and her ability to take a punch. My major argument, of course, was Clinton’s experience. But experience is a two-edged sword.

    The chance for a fresh start – for “change” in the current political lexicon – was to me the great hope of this presidential campaign. But Clinton’s recent remarks, and the underlying policy from which they apparently sprang, are evidence that, at least on this issue, we might only look forward to more of the same under a Clinton presidency. In that sense, I think we would be losing one of the great chances of this generation to begin to fashion a more sensible policy in a region that I care about greatly.

    The gist: The U.S. Military doesn’t have a crematorium at the Dover AFB Mortuary, so they contract cremation services to two local crematoriums “Torbert’s” and “Pippen’s”. Apparently Torberts has a sign outside of it’s facility that says “Friends Forever Pet Cremation Service” and that the remains of some soldiers have been cremated in incinerators used to also cremate pets.

    Pippens’ crematorium is located at the funeral home and is used only for human remains, while Torbert’s has incinerators for both human and animal remains.

    While most facilities don’t advertise the fact that they handle both human and animal remains, there is a sign near the Torbert crematory advertising the “Friends Forever Pet Cremation Service.”

    Officials said there are three incinerators at the Torbert facility, and two are used for humans, while one is used for pets. The human and pet facilities are separated by about 20 feet.

    Torbert said the human and pet crematories are in adjoining buildings on the same property but have separate entrances. A sign advertising pet cremation services is in front of the Friends Forever office, but there are no signs on the building housing the human crematory facilities, which Torbert said are not used for cremation of pets.

    Me? John? Here’s a news flash, if you will, I’ll be sitting behind Bill Clinton Sunday, noon – assuming the Secret Service hasn’t wised up to who I am. As Baker County Democrats Vice-chair and SCC DPO Delegate I am a noteworthy local Democrat, it’s my job to be there for any Democratic candidate – not to campaign in a Primary, officially, but to be in solidaritiy with fellow Democrats and try to make their life easy without actually working for them. Sometimes a balancing act.

    So, I am going to publicly sit a few feet from one of the more popular Presidents, a man who for two terms was essentially the most powerful man on earth – and bite my damn tongue to keep from calling him out. What a fucking laugh, you have to appreciate what a jerkwater no place Baker City is to understand the irony of BC coming to BC to stand in front of hick nail banger who wants to call him dumbass. What an alphabet soup of ridiculousness, BC comes to BC so CB can fume.

    I haven’t seen it said, so I’ll say it and I’ve paid sufficient dues to be vetted, “You’re doing a hell of job for a lately Republican.” Or anybody else, for that matter. I have good reason to know how scarce real committment to a political cause is and I also know how delayed any gratification is. In some ways it is tougher being in the trenches than a candidate, the foot soldiers get no recognition and in a tough state or CD there’s not a lot of reward in just minimizing the damage to your cause.

    Baker County, all 14K of us in 3500 sq mi is 3D:4.6R, we lose pretty regularly and 20 yrs ago this was solid D country. John may be a little late to the party, but this Party has good use for people of reason and enthusiam, however they got there. HOWEVER.

    I can have the personal ear of some damn powerful people in this State, with State and Federal power – and be listened to. That’s taken a mountain of work and time and I’ll tell anybody that doesn’t like the course of events that that is exactly what it takes to have an effect. John is stepping right up and I applaud. Some bucks for a campaign is a good thing, but the real shortage is always bodies. Eight months from now they’ll be real short in supply, it always is that way after a Presidential election, and that is when the real work starts. Registering voters, showing the Party flag, trying to bring youth in, just trying to keep the show alive because nobody is paying any attention.

    Anything I can report from the Bill visit will have to be by memory, it would be truly rude to be taking notes. It’s a shame it isn’t Obama, but I suppose Bill will have to do. Actually, I’m lucky it’s not Obama, my wife would make me miserable if I couldn’t get here right up by the O. For what it’s worth a month ago I was introduced to Chelsea, I find her easier to like than her mother. For the record, I’d smile, and applaud appropriately for Hillary also.
