Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

They spent the last eight months firing professionals and replacing them with ideologues.

Republicans got rid of McCarthy. Democrats chose not to save him.

Donald Trump found guilty as fuck – May 30, 2024!

The press swings at every pitch, we don’t have to.

If you’re gonna whine, it’s time to resign!

The republican speaker is a slippery little devil.

Second rate reporter says what?

Hell hath no fury like a farmer bankrupted.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

A tremendous foreign policy asset… to all of our adversaries.

Prediction: the gop will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

A fool as well as an oath-breaker.

It is possible to do the right thing without the promise of a cookie.

That meeting sounds like a shotgun wedding between a shitshow and a clusterfuck.

President Musk and Trump are both poorly raised, coddled 8 year old boys.

Dear media: perhaps we ought to let Donald Trump speak for himself!

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

SCOTUS: It’s not “bribery” unless it comes from the Bribery region of France. Otherwise, it’s merely “sparkling malfeasance”.

Let me file that under fuck it.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

You cannot shame the shameless.

This country desperately needs a functioning fourth estate.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

Has anyone tried the new Podcasts app for the iPhone with a car stereo? Apparently iOS6 forces podcasts into that and out of the main Music app. I’ve heard that the ability to control Podcasts with a car stereo is … limited. I’m not upgrading if it’s too fucked up, since 99.9% of what I listen to is podcasts.

Well, we New Yawkers have to keep up our hardbitten, cynical, snide image! Don’t want to let the country down by being a bunch ‘a softies. I for one will probably do both a garage sale and put some things on Ebay that I was thinking of listing anyway. I’ve thrown as much Obama’s/Warren’s way as I can, but unemployment can blunt the edge of one’s generous impulse, sad to say.

    I love Nate Silver:

Earlier today, he mentions that Obama’s bounce has eroded, pointing to a series of contradictory polls (two that look great for Obama, two that have him leading but more marginally).

Instead of just leaving it there, he goes back to work and figures out why the polls are contradictory. As many might suspect – the cellphone effect – but he does this rigorously and not speculatively.

Why cant other journalists do that kind of work? I know, SATSQ.

I did this during the last election. It was totally my own idea, actually. We called it “Something Old for Something New” and we asked people to come and donate (I think it was 25 dollars or something catchy and easy) and bring something good they wanted to get rid of. We gave everyone a number as they came through the door and they picked their choice object in the order of their arrival after everyone had come. People could donate what they wanted directly at the site so Ididn’t have to collect the money or anything though I think we did have an Obama organizer show up to collect checks if there were any. It was super cool and really fun.

@Joel: Finally, a good explanation. The trending on the 538 forecast was a bit puzzling.

That said, today has been an awesome polling day. To recap:

    WI +6 (NYT/CBS)
    WI +14 (Marquette)
    VA +4 (NYT/CBS)
    VA +7 (Fox News)
    CO +1 (NYT/CBS)
    MI +8 (CNN/ORC)
    FL +5 (Fox News)
    OH +7 (Fox News)
    National +8 (Pew)

All LV voters. And yes, that is Faux News showing Obama with leads in line with where we have seen other state polling. I guess even Rupert knows which way the polls are going.

@Jim, Foolish Literalist and Fact Checker: I do wonder about that Marquette poll as it has Baldwin up 9(!) points.

I have to say, if Democrats can get Warren, Baldwin, Chris Murphy, and a few others in the Senate, we’re going to start having a really solid block of progressives in the Senate, especially when you consider we’ll also be dumping turds like Joe Lieberman and Ben Nelson from the caucus (note I said caucus, well aware Joementum isn’t a Democrat).

I thought this year was going to be a bloodbath, but I think there’s a slim chance we could end up coming out of this election even or better in the Senate.

@MikeJ: I should clarify. There are two orthogonal degrees of fuckupedness:

    1) The everything but the kitchen sink nature of iTunes owing to it becoming the sole sync conduit for iOS.
    2) It’s shit performance on Windows.

    1) is being worked on. They’re stripping out a lot of the sync stuff and putting it in iCloud/dedicated apps. iTunes should return to being a music oriented app. It might suck – but it won’t suck because it’s hauling around an interface to add PDFs to your phone.
    2) probably won’t change.

Got the wife a 4 2 years ago. It also subbed for her recently dead camera at the time. She’s never liked the camera on the 4 – it’s just too slow for her. And she wanted white, but it was delayed until the next year due to production issues. The boy needs a phone now, so he’ll get the old one, she’ll get her white with nice camera one – and she’ll appreciate the turn by turn.

Not sure why the analogue out is an issue. The DAC in the phone isn’t great. Wouldn’t it be better to take the digital out through something where you could choose the DAC?

The DAC in the phone isn’t great. Wouldn’t it be better to take the digital out through something where you could choose the DAC?

In theory, yes, but as of now there are only two DACs that are “made for iPhone” certified, and nobody has any clue as to whether the DAC that is going to be built into the Lightning-to-30-pin adaptor is going to be any good. There’s a 15-page thread on this topic at Head-Fi.

The DAC in the iPhone isn’t horrible; it’s a perfectly respectable Cirrus Logic 43xx. The problem is that the conversion chip is only the beginning of the story; the downstream analog implementation is critical to SQ.

So far, Audioquest is saying for public consumption that the change from 30-pin to Lightning isn’t going to delay the release of the Hummingbird (the iOS variant of the Dragonfly). I’ll believe it when I have one in my hot little hands.

Romney also expressed in the video why he didn’t want to appear on Saturday Night Live for fear of not seeming Presidential and how David Letterman “hates” him because he goes on The Tonight Show.

Dude, Letterman hates you for the same reason(s) most of us do: You’re a nasty, weaselly asshole. Most of Letterman’s guests go on Leno.

    @PsiFighter37:

Say what you will about Brown, but getting elected statewide as a Republican means you have to have some political chops (as well a little luck in who you draw as your opponent).

I watched his debates with Coakley. I barely remember them, they were that exciting.

So I have no idea what will happen tomorrow.

    I found this article which stated something I have been saying for a while, namely that contemporary conservatives have become like the Marxists in that they have become ideologically pure;

In this case, however, it is Capitalism and The Market that is the Grand Unified Theory of Everything, which would solve all our problems if only it were allowed to work unmolested.

The first Scott/Warren debate is tomorrow at 7pm. With the polls as they are, it should be… interesting.

Do you think there’d be enough interest here for it to be worth a live blog thread on BJ? Or too local?

I may have to put up a livestream link and run. But if I can’t watch it immediately, I hope they’ll have the video posted later in the evening, because I do want to watch it — despite the way that smarmy little Repub plant Jon Keller makes we want to smack the smug out of him (and then bury the remnants in a matchbox).

@raven: I was worried about whether I would be able to use the car stereo controls to pause, fast forward, etc. A friend of mine told me tonight that it works fine, though. Guess I’ll go for the upgrade.

I’m conserving DVR space for Sophia Loren and Vittorio De Sica tomorrow: Two Women (1960) at 7:15 a.m. EDT (Loren won the Best Actress Oscar) and Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow (1963) at 10:30 a.m. EDT (Oscar, Best Foreign Language Film).

One also showing which I’ve never seen and am looking forward to viewing.

Ghosts – Italian Style (6:15 p.m. Eastern time)

Although supposedly mediocre fare, Loren is still Loren, and that’s enough to merit a peek.

@PsiFighter37: I decided to go see what Red State was talking about and found this amusing, interesting, and a little saddening:

“Well, it is know that the Democrats are having a hard time matching the intensity and the enthusiasm of the GOP to vote this election. Not only that, but enthusiasm among youth and Hispanic voters is down by as much as 20 points compared to other bellweather demographic groups. On top of that, Obama’s support among whites is down to 39% on average which is very, very perilous. So what happens when a pollster tries to be realistic? They get attacked as being biased or worse…”

Yes, we can demonstrably see that when a pollster tries to be realistic, the Noise Machine goes into overdrive with “unattributed details”–otherwise known as wishful thinking.
