Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The real work of an opposition party is to oppose.

Trump’s cabinet: like a magic 8 ball that only gives wrong answers.

So fucking stupid, and still doing a tremendous amount of damage.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

“But what about the lurkers?”

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires Republicans to act in good faith.

Polls are now a reliable indicator of what corporate Republicans want us to think.

“Facilitate” is an active verb, not a weasel word.

They punch you in the face and then start crying because their fist hurts.

Sometimes the world just tells you your cat is here.

Hey Washington Post, “Democracy Dies in Darkness” was supposed to be a warning, not a mission statement.

SCOTUS: It’s not “bribery” unless it comes from the Bribery region of France. Otherwise, it’s merely “sparkling malfeasance”.

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

You are so fucked. Still, I wish you the best of luck.

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

Oh FFS you might as well trust a 6-year-old with a flamethrower.

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

If a good thing happens for a bad reason, it’s still a good thing.

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

The revolution will be supervised.

Human rights are not a matter of opinion!

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

The Supreme Court cannot be allowed to become the ultimate, unaccountable arbiter of everything.

The president knocked Mitt to the canvas and didn’t let him up all night.

And with all of that “agreeing” with President Obama, I think Mitt’s flipped his last flop. I get the feeling that the right wingers who have been so sure of Obama’s “failures” aren’t too pleased seeing their candidate adopt all those “failures”…

Every one else just saw Romney as the empty suit he is. You can BS your way through domestic debates by saying “I know how to create jobs”, but when your foreign policy is “Me too, but ‘stronger'”, it’s pretty clear you’re out of your depth.

I swear the stress of this election may just finish me off. Two afternoons a week I’m in charge of a local food pantry (we give emergency food to everyone & weekly food to vets & families of serving military, and don’t get me started on the fact that serving military aren’t paid enough to provide meals for their families, it’s a national disgrace) and the number of undecided voters that we get COLLECTING FOOD BECAUSE THEY CAN’T AFFORD TO FEED THEMSELVES is unbelievable. Typical comments are things like “Obama is better for social things but my NRA list says that he will get rid of the second amendment”. And then they’ll ask me if I know of any health insurance that covers pre-existing conditions. It’s not my place to get into political arguments with customers but I’m not sure how long I can keep it together. I’m trying so hard to keep my blood pressure down to a healthy level in these last weeks. I just want this to be over so bad. As long as Obama wins of course. Even this purgatory of stress is better than the hell of a Romney win. The Mittbot can’t possibly pull this off though, can he?

See, this is points out a point of difference between libs and conservatives. When Obama got shellacked a couple of weeks ago, libs called it a loss, refusing to put whipped cream on poop. OTOH, conservatives have simply said that Romney passed “the presidential bar,” meaning, I guess, that he didn’t drool on his shoes.

I am so turned upside down I couldn’t tell if he killed it or not, b/c I can’t tell when people are going to like and buy Romney’s bullshit. It all blends together to one long crass bullshit sales job. So I was worried. Good to see the narrative was set. And MSNBC is killing it right now. Maddow’s righteous indignation (almost to tears) about the Afghanistan backtrack was a thing of fucking beauty. This fits the Romnesia narrative perfectly. I really think Americans are just fed up with his lying fucking soulless sack of shit used car salesman routine. It’s just too much. And the narrative has got to be that he doesn’t mean anything he says.

Not a knockout, IMO, but Battling Barry outscored The Mighty Mitt in just about every round: not least because at least about 40% of Romney’s FP “positions” were basically “me-too!” to whatever President Obama is already doing: with most of the rest consisting of cliched campaign boilerplate. Not that The Pres could resist firing up his own Cliche-O-Matic all too g*DD*m often: but stuff like the “horses and bayonets” quip will probably the the stuff that’s remembered. My off-the cuff grade:

    Obama: B
    Romney: C

Make that a C- for Mitt: Iran “needs Syria for access to the sea”?? So calling that body of water the “Persian Gulf” is a misnomer? Who knew?

Of course! They are going back on top of my dresser (still unwashed) until Election Day, when I break them out again.

I’ll have to remember to wear some of my longer pants that day so the poll workers don’t see them and kick me out for electioneering at the polling place.

It made me kind of mad, really, that someone like me without a lot of money could be the top donor.

I really don’t get how pundits can continue to assert that Romney is still experiencing “momentum.” The polls – both national and state – have shown a stable Obama slight lead for nearly two weeks now, no further Romney advances. That’s true of 538 as well; in fact, Obama’s odds have gradually risen since his low ten or so days ago. So not only has Romney’s momentum stopped, but Obama has still emerged the favorite, slowly climbing back up.

    Damn you liberal media!

@Jake: He’s not as well known but his model has a great track record. His biggest mistake was in 2004 when he predicted Kerry would win, but that was because he made the erroneous assumption that undecideds would overwhelmingly break for the challenger. The model itself was actually highly accurate that election (as with other elections) and he no longer makes that assumption about undecided voters.

Sam Wang was dead on in his 2004 Electoral College predictions, and off by 1 electoral vote in 2008.

@Cacti: Nate Silver tends to be supremely cautious (a good thing, overall), which likely explains his low-balling Obama in 2008. Could also be the reason why his probability of an Obama victory, while decently high at 70% currently, is lower than Sam Wang’s 90%. But Silver’s caution is also good reason to give credence in his consistently rating Obama the favorite in this election. He has more than established his objectivity.

@Jake: Yes, Sam Wang is as good as Silver. His method is much more Occam-friendly, which I prefer, since Silver’s model has been tweaked beyond recognition.

I like the both, however, they just give you different takes on the same data. Wang doesn’t try to make house effect adjustments or anything like that, he just uses medians to throw out outliers.

Healthcare questioners: Say this: “It would depend on whether Obama is re-elected. The Affordable Healthcare Act prevents insurers from dropping you for pre-existing conditions and the insurance exchanges each state is working to set up will have a high-risk insurance pool just for people like you. Just like Mitt Romney’s plan in Massachusetts, but he does not believe in extending that plan nationwide, like Obamacare does. And he has promised to reinstate the insurance practice of denying coverage for pre-existing conditions.

    What’s up with that?
