Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

How any woman could possibly vote for this smug smarmy piece of misogynistic crap is beyond understanding.

Black Friday ‘Artists Among Us’

by Anne Laurie|  November 23, 20124:43 pm| 100 Comments

This post is in: Domestic Politics, Excellent Links, Readership Capture

FacebookTweetEmail

There are any number of gifted artists and crafters among the Balloon Juice readership. If you are one of them, this is the place to add a comment linking to your jewelry, paintings, needlearts, ceramics, sculpture, photography, music, cooking, house-building, graphic novel/comix, or ebooks website or contacts.

If your highest art form is shopping, here’s your chance to browse for gifts without having to put your shoes on… and you can buy stuff for other people, too!

I’m planning to run another ‘Artists Among Us’ post next week (for the people who are away from their PCs this weekend), so the first half-dozen artists who send me a .jpg or .gif will get their work on the front page…

Thank you for the chance to remind those with kitties, or need gifts for kitties, that the:

    Way of Cats Shop

features Mr WereBear’s unique approach to cat toys and litterbox odor.

His herbal creations keep the cats happy and contented, and you can be confident of some nice video footage as a bonus.

Hi, all. I have a little corner of Etsy for jewelry:

Also, I thought you all might find this hilarious (this is not my shop, but I saw it, and it made me think of balloon juicers):

    Hi All,

I have an online casual games site that is ad-free (and politics and religion free as well), that’s particularly popular with seniors. I create the games with intellectual stimulation and brain plasticity in mind, but never overt. We have members up of all ages, all the way into their upper 90s. It’s $5 a month, but there always are 3 free-to-play games on the top of the front page and they change weekly.

If you like casual games, or are looking for a safe place to send Mom or Dad where they’ll be treated like valuable people and never hustled or sold anything, check it out. The games work on everything, including tablets and even MSNTV2 and WebTV.

    @cdmarine: Oh, marketing!

Himalayan pink salt…is rich in 84 different minerals and trace elements and is widely considered the most pure salt available.

Um, “rich in 84 different minerals and trace elements” and “pure” are kind of at odds with each other. Should our salt be pure NaCl, or should it have lots of other stuff in it?

But since I got into cooking I’ve indulged in it, and it DOES taste better. I bought five pounds for $19, and I figure I’m set for a few decades.

I am not a cook, but I can’t see how trace impurities would have any significant effect on the taste of a dish. I’ve certainly never heard of a chef recommending that people go to a laboratory supply house and buy reagent-grade sodium chloride, which is the purest salt you can buy anywhere.

What a nice thing, BJ. Seriously.

So, my thing is writing. I wrote a book that had to be print-on-demand because the market is small but intense — it’s about my family in the first year after my 45 yr old husband broke his neck skiing.

You can buy new copies at lulu, or used ones at amazon.

People who need to read it are generally NOT people with injuries, eh? Their families are, especially their extended families and friends who CAN’T imagine the detailed effed-uppedness of the whole scene. It’s like getting sent to another planet, except you’re still in your neighborhood. It’s like suddenly and permanently becoming “other,” except you’re still right there with your main peeps.

People like it a lot, once they get past the oh this is too sad for anything moment.

I’m told it’s a page turner; I only know that I wanted to display my morbid sense of humor along with my community’s extravagant love.

    Thanks.

@Citizen_X: A quick Google returns elemental assays of Himalayan pink salt from a few sources.

Surprise! The two most common elements in it are sodium and chlorine (98% NaCl). The other substantial trace elements include sulfur (more than 1% by weight apparently), magnesium, potassium and calcium with a dash of lithium. The rest of the trace elements are in the parts per million region which will be totally ineffective in the human system unless you’re eating a kilo of this stuff every day. One element missing from the assay which could actually be healthful in very small doses is iodine. You can get that from iodised salt though.

My novel, The Christmas Mutiny, is available for download at Amazon and Googlebooks:
What if the soldiers who observed a Christmas Truce in 1914 had decided not to go back to fighting? I have come up with at least one possible answer.

What I really like about these artista threads, are all the shy artists that delurk to show us their talent. Which is amazing.

Wingnuts put up an “Artist in our Midst”, and all you’d likely get are endless fart jokes and a collage of beer bottle labels.

@General Stuck: General Stuck, do you still sell your photoprints?

(The photos you sold me of Charlie make me smile, even though they’re nicer than any photos I’ve taken of my own dogs!)

I’ve pitched my popular science book about computing in a past thread (and I may again :-), but given what Anne has written I’ll instead just mention a couple of self-published books in the same area by friends/colleagues, targeted at kids.

Lauren Ipsum, by Carlos Bueno: Laurie is lost in Userland. She knows where she is, or where she’s going, but maybe not at the same time. The only way out is through Jargon-infested swamps, gates guarded by perfect logic, and the perils of breakfast time at the Philosopher’s Diner. It’s a combination of Alice in Wonderland and The Phantom Tollbooth, clever and funny.

Computational Fairy Tales, by Jeremy Kubica, has the great tag line, Have you ever thought that computer science should include more dragons and wizards? It’s computer science concepts as told through fairy tales.

Not sure if you’d call it art but I fabricate things in steel. Gates, barbeques of all types but mostly built in, fireplace screens, even trailers are some of the things. Everything is custom made but my prices are reasonable. I’ll try and get some pics up this weekend. Anyone interested, contact me through my blog by clicking on my name.

Just so happens I been printing and mat framing a bunch of Hummingbird photos for sale. Mostly on Ebay and a website I been building for it. Am not quite ready to display them. Maybe by the end of next week.

This isn’t mine, but my mother has just started her own book repair business (a proper web presence will be coming later, or sooner, since I was laid off from my web job last week). She’s yet to post her full gallery of pictures on her Facebook, but I’ve seen some really amazing repairs she’s done with books that looked like lost causes. She’s even offered to teach me, and I’ll probably take her up on it.

Well, I’m late to the game, but I make hooked wool rugs. Here’s a link to one I hooked this year. It just won a ribbon at the Shelburne Rug Hooking show last week. I make commissioned pieces and also teach.

    thank you.

@Valdivia: Well, what I will probably do is get one or two of the framed images and then order a bunch of different images in the notecard size and play with them and eventually frame several in a group. I really love the geometric patterns and am eager to see how they work with each other. You have an astonishing eye. The angles of some of the shots, I think, must expose things about the buildings that even the architects themselves never saw.

That is such a generous offer, to send the picture files. Thank you so much. It might help me choose — or it might just make me want them all :-)

I realize I’ve seen only a fraction of your work. Am very much looking forward to a leisurely browse. Just knocked out by your talent.

    @SiubhanDuinne:

thank you so so much, again. and if you want any specific images just email me at the flickr address *just click on my nym and it will take you to my flickr page where most of the images are as well). I really am happy to send them.

It was quite by accident that I started doing this kind of photography about a year ago and was so surprised to realize I had a knack for looking up and seeing this wondrous geometric world around me. It makes every city I visit a lot of fun (and also annoying to walk behind!)

I am also a writer and I have a new book called The Cabin. It’s a memoir and, among other things, it’s about the time I moved to Quebec from Bellingham, WA, and built my cabin in the woods. There are scenes in Montreal, Seattle, Oakland, Vermont and the Eastern Townships of Quebec. It can be ordered on my website – http://www.munirabooks.com – will eventually be available on amazon and from any book store – that’s all in process now.

My partner has an illustrated kids book on science on sale. It’s on amazon, but as a kindle book only for now. If you buy the book this weekend you can also get free download of the videos made for MIT too.

The details for the book/video are on the blog:
    professorblue.com/blue-friday/

    Direct Amazon link:

As one of the last remaining jazz vibraphonists in captivity I offer up to you my website on which you will find (in addition to more info about me than anyone would want to know)a plethora – more or less – of unique CDs and a couple of DVDs.
I look forward to all BJers so inclined to refer two or three hundred of their closest friends to my site so I can afford a decent Xmas gift for my long suffering wife who has had to endure life with a working jazz musician these past two decades.
    Thanks for your interest.

@Munira: I’m an American also living in the Québec province. My sister-in-law is in one of the Eastern townships along Rt 133 which looks like nothing from the little highway (actually drab) but then you veer off and go through the towns and realize Wow. Charming.

Bluntly put: Auto-play on a website – especially without a warning – is a real turnoff.

Now I’m going to listen some more.

@Ed or Edna Dane Defender of Donuts:

Thanks for the shout-out, and hooray for family! I had a lot of hits from this website today, and I wanted to check out balloon-juice :D Everyone is so talented – I’m really enjoying reading through all of your comments.

As far as my soap making is concerned, I make cold process soap and have been for about 16 years now. My Etsy shop, , has more details about the soaps (and myself) if anyone is interested in great soap! The shop also has about half of my stock, with the other half to be coming out within the next few days (adding cherry/tangerine/lemon/lime/orange candy, killer bee honey, almond vanilla, sleepytime, cinnamon tangerine, eucalyptus sweet-pea, and pomegranate/grapefruit/orange soaps). Feel free to send me a message on Etsy if you have any questions :D

    Happy holidays!
