Rest of the weekend? Gotta figure out why I’m flying to southern Alabama at 6:30 Monday morning. Tickets booked, no idea what to do when I get there.
Continue dragging junk out of the basement until the trash cans and recycling are full. Nap, dinner, movie, early bed.
Ralph Spoilsport
Sig other’s youngest just went into the ER. Sick boy. Tree is (fakey) already back in the attic, and the outdoor lights are back in the basement. 3000 miles away…

@RossInDetroit, Rational Subjectivist: The redfish are hitting. The food at Felix’s Fish Camp Grill on Mobile Bay was really good.

Next year, Hitchhiker should send the picture in for the calendar. It’s probably to late for this year.

@Raven:
I’ll be in Greenville AL, south-west of Montgomery, but only on Monday. Then up to Charlotte NC again on Monday night or Tuesday for some reason. The boss will be really busy next week and I hate to bug him but I really need to know why I’m going there.

The cat looks like a cardboard cutout.
I was watching a dvr’d episode of HouseHunters with two Canadians who buy a place in Helsinki. I wish they would put the year of the episodes. Anyhow, I couldn’t believe they paid 295K for a one bedroom house. It was cute but jeez 295K. We ain’t talking London, Tokyo or Manhattan here. And the realtor had quite the attitude. I wouldn’t have bought anything from the guy just for his snotty attitude.

The ever-lovely Peregrina and I are doing Christmas tree shopping this evening – our first Christmas together! – and I am doing a whole ton of grading before then.

I’m working on the New York Times crossword puzzle, going for two weeks in a row wherein I made it through it without a single mistake… in ink. I hear it keeps the mind active.
Listening/watching “Up” with Steve Kornacki sitting in for Chris Hayes, sipping coffee, enjoying the warm breeze coming in from the open patio door on this December morning in Miami, then off to Quaker meeting and an afternoon of writing on the epic novel-in-progress.
I have decided that weekends are good.
Kirbster
To a curious cat, a Christmas tree must look like a giant scratching post/kitty condo covered in cat toys.
Josie
@Kirbster: And how! Years ago we learned to tie the tree up to our wrought iron staircase after one of our cats climbed and toppled a six foot tree complete with ornaments. Since then, due to cats and kids, I have had only unbreakable ornaments.

This guy Avik Roys been on UP a few times and he was on Bill Maher. I don’t get it. He literally contributes next to nothing to the conversation. If he’s spoken more than five minutes this morning I would be shocked. He just sits there like a deaf mute. He needs some media training or something.
Ash Can
@Ralph Spoilsport: Here’s hoping he gets well soon.

Yip yah … two weeks running I’ve made it through the NY Times puzzle without a mistake. Personal best.
Wow, I need to get a life. Or maybe I’ll rent one first and see if I like it.
WaterGirl
Thanks for the tip on UP with Chris Hayes this morning. I never watch the show when someone sits in for Chris.

Saw Dan Savage on Up this morning. Reminded me to hit the Santorum link.

So how long before that cat sitting regally in front of the tree started climbing it?
We have an enormous tuxedo rescue (he wandered in at 5 pounds, 2 years later he’s 18 pounds and not fat, just BIG) who loves to climb up and down our fiber optic tree (no ornaments because cats). Last year he climbed up and down it and then tried to to eat the fiber optics (needles, in cat parlance.) We put it upon Christmas Eve and took it down two days later. This year we are hoping the cat is mare mature. Otherwise Christmas ends in the middle of Advent. Maybe we could stuff and eat the cat for Christmas. His little cat pals would be sad, but perhaps they’d get over it. On the other hand, is a full season Christmas tree worth all that cat sadness?

Excuse previous post typos.

@Mustang Bobby:
I’m considering that Premium Crosswords subscription they have. I do it as much as possible at work.

That a great photo and a gorgeous kitty :)
Citizen_X
Don’t let Bill O’Reilly see that picture. He’ll assume the cats have joined the War on Christmas Creches.
@Kirbster: Seriously. A Christmas tree is practically designed to be the Awesomest Giant Kitteh Toy Evah. Cats must be thinking, “What the hell are they yelling at me for? They put that thing up for me, right? What else do they expect me to do with it?” A doggie equivalent would be, I don’t know, a tree full of squirrels or something.

What’s funny is they (Cleo has a sister) don’t climb the tree. They drink water from its stand, and sometimes they play with the low-hanging ornaments, but their very favorite thing is to perch on that old creche. My husband posted the picture on his facebook page with this caption:
And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them, and the gay Santas were blissfully oblivious.

She wanted bacon for breakfast but we told her she’s too young.

We never had a Christmas tree when I was growing up. Pout.
Oh, wait…

Hey! For why is my comment in moderation?
Yutsano
@opie_jeanne: KITTEH!! She looks like a little lovebug already!
@Citizen_X: When I was younger our Newfie Sasha used to knock over Christmas trees with her tail. It most likely wasn’t her fault as Newfies are natural babysitters and she went wherever we went. But it would happen every. single. year. Mom never got mad at her for it though.

@Yutsano: She is, when she isn’t racing around like a remote control car, complete with tail/antenna cocked over her back.
It’s been over 17 years since we had a kitten in the house.
Yutsano
@opie_jeanne: She will adjust you to your proper underling status soon enough. Sounds like she’s on her way there already!

Open thread, so I got an open question. I know there’s a more recent open thread, but it looks like only NFLtalk allowed.
A fb page I’m looking at has these rightwingers mewling about the commies. One just said they killed 150 million. I could just come back and say that’s absurdly high. But the real numbers are big. Except one thing: I’ve always been a little cowed about answering righties who quote the big numbers of deaths in China and the USSR. But the biggest constituent factors in both of these apocalyptic numbers were agricultural disasters. Brought on or helped along, everyone says, by communist policies. Ok. But, they’re, like, you know, agricultural disasters. The forced collectivization in the USSR and the Great Leap Forward in China.
I’m just wondering, why does ‘communism’ get all this apparently exclusive guilt heaped on it for these events? Was there no drought or flooding or somesuch involved? To put it crudely, how does a central government manage to starve tens of millions of people with its bare hands?
BethanyAnne
@fourmorewars: Communism gets that guilt because “we” beat it. It’s tribalism masked as a rational argument. Stalin and the other assorted leaders did kill a metric assload of people, but that’s not really what the argument is about.
asiangrrlMN
@hitchhiker: Awwww! Cleo is the queen of her domaain!
@opie_jeanne: Annie is unbearably adorable!
@Yutsano: What’s shaking, Yutsy?
opie_jeanne
@asiangrrlMN: Annie says thanks, she knows.
Where the heck have you been, Missy? I’ve missed you.
