Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Fight them, without becoming them!

Republicans in disarray!

The real work of an opposition party is to hold the people in power accountable.

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

We will not go back.

Hey Washington Post, “Democracy Dies in Darkness” was supposed to be a warning, not a mission statement.

“In this country American means white. everybody else has to hyphenate.”

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

Democracy is not a spectator sport.

Let there be snark.

“The defense has a certain level of trust in defendant that the government does not.”

Too little, too late, ftfnyt. fuck all the way off.

Sometimes the world just tells you your cat is here.

Polls are now a reliable indicator of what corporate Republicans want us to think.

Be a wild strawberry.

“Loving your country does not mean lying about its history.”

We can show the world that autocracy can be defeated.

Fear or fury? The choice is ours.

SCOTUS: It’s not “bribery” unless it comes from the Bribery region of France. Otherwise, it’s merely “sparkling malfeasance”.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

The most dangerous place for a black man in America is in a white man’s imagination.

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

Democracy cannot function without a free press.

There are some who say that there are too many strawmen arguments on this blog.

John Cole Presents “Stories from the Road”

You are here: Home / Archives for John Cole Presents "Stories from the Road"

A year ago I asked my boss if I could work remotely from Arizona for a couple months and she said yes, so I am picking up Joelle on Christmas Eve in Pittsburgh, going to her mothers in Poland, Ohio on Christmas Day, and on the 26th packing up the truckster and driving, with Thurston Howl, to Tempe. We’re going to take our time and break it up over five to six days, and I am still debating the wisdom of telling you fuckers our exact itinerary.

Thanksgiving Night Open Thread

Another beautiful day here. Had an early lunch at Duke’s and then lazed around the room and beach all day. Have a pizza on the way because neither of us want to go anywhere and honestly I’m not sure I could pour Joelle into the car right now because she took an edible. So we’re just sitting here watching the Lord of the Rings (as Joelle called is, “the story of my people” because I call her a hobbit so frequently).

At any rate it is very nice here, a good place to visit, but not to live because the prices are astronomical, but I really do need to move somewhere near water, and I really like the pace people move around here. Reminds me of Puerto Rico.

It’s also just nice seeing what people can do in spaces designed for people and not fucking cars. It’s so god damned nice being abled to walk six blocks to a little store to pick up something and not have to worry about being run the fuck over. In West Virginia, you can’t do it because there are no sidewalks and no density to get nice things all together in one area. In a lot of other places, they just fucking choose not to. One of my favorite things about Germany was the fussgangerplatze (did I spell that right) where you could just go and have a whole day in the city and never deal with cars.

As a former West Virginia National Guardsman, the death of that young specialist is really really awful, and I am sure the response will be laboratory created to be the absolutely most destructive and divisive and eventually self-defeating thing to happen as possible. I don’t want to think about it, but I will say this- were I the commander in chief, before ordering a shitload of additional troops to the region, I would find out if this was a lone wolf or a network, I would find out if the intent was to bring more troops aka targets to the region, and all sorts of things before I would act in haste.

And it all feels so wag the dog. It’s so convenient every time his numbers go in the shitter someone ends up dead, and I hate myself for saying that because i remember Larry fucking Nichols and the Clinton Body Count, but it’s where I am with these fucking nazis.

Hope all is well and remember to call your loved ones and tell them Happy Thanksgiving.

I did not get anywhere near what I wanted to do today, and am not making the progress I need to get going and may not leave on Monday. At any rate, the world is on fire and I am behind on what I need to do and would really just rather talk about this:

I want her to be my next door neighbor and best friend because I know she will have the same sort of crazy shit happening to her every day. I know in my heart she has flannel pajamas and an oversized robe and comfy slippers and walks around outside in them.

Well, that was not so bad. I still feel like everyone else was more worked up than me. I just ignored every one else except the minister and the lady in the dress.

Also, I know they like to talk about liberal intolerance, but you will note that this atheist had not one, not two, not three, but four ministers involved. I’m glad you all enjoyed it. It was rather tolerable as weddings go.

Fighting Oligarchy in West Virginny (Open Thread)

U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) is in Cole Country this weekend. He’s taking his “Fighting Oligarchy: Where We Go From Here” tour to West (By God) Virginia today and Saturday.

John Cole is currently at the Capitol Theatre in Wheeling waiting for the rally to start. He reports that the venue is half full at 4 PM, and the event isn’t scheduled to start until 6 PM. He’s unable to post from his phone (because WordPress) but sent this photo to share with y’all:

Half full Capitol Theater in Wheeling, WV

John’s looking for a live feed in case anyone wants to follow along when the rally starts. I’ll post one here if he relays a link or I find one at showtime. Will also update with pics from Cole if/when I receive them. Here’s a description of the event from the local CBS affiliate:

During the speech, organizers say Sanders is expected to focus on the takeover of the national government by billionaires and large corporations and the disastrous “Big Beautiful Bill,” which will cause 15 million Americans to lose their health insurance and destroy the national safety net.

Also speaking at the event will be local workers who have been helping the community, challenging corporations, and fighting for labor rights in West Virginia, according to organizers.

Meanwhile, open thread!

ETA: John forwarded a live stream!

I’m having mac and cheese with stewed tomatoes for dinner. Well, it’s the bougie mac and cheese, you know, the shells, with that little packet of cheese/petroleum product instead of the dehydrated surplus government cheese powder. Because I am fancy like that. No I don’t know why I eat those together other than my dad ate it when I was a kid and now sometimes I do as an adult. I have no idea if this is a cultural/regional thing.

As to the dismal politics of the day, I have nothing positive to offer and no update on the voting because I remain convinced they will pass it in the Senate one way or another (these people have no souls) but I did think about it for a while today. What confuses me the most about these Republicans in red states is that they are not even remotely acting like the senator of a state that has needs and interests. Everything they are going is going to DEVASTATE their states.

Of all of them, Murkowski is the only one that makes sense. Of course she is an obviously horrible person because she KNOWS and has said how bad the bill is and how many people it will hurt, but I suppose she could make a shitty argument that all the good stuff Alaskans will get in the deals to buy her vote will outweigh the negative, so at least she is looking out for her state, something the others can not.

Instead, they like Stannis Baratheon, are listening to the ginger witch whispering in his ear and burning his child at the stake.

As Betty noted below, these bitches are fighting like Jill and that Vand der pump lady and that awful Frankel woman, and it is right out there in public, and it is messy as fuck and getting messier.

Real House Betas of DC

Donald Trump could accidentally end up doing the funniest fucking thing that would actually probably be a service to the country and the world while also fracturing the electorate that voted for him. We’ll see.

In other news, Maxwell brought a live chipmonk that is now in locked in the downstairs bathroom while I corral Steve (have to find him first) and lock both cats in the room with me and then open up the door to the bathroom to let the critter find its way out the back door. Figured it could use a few minutes locked in a room to take a breather and chill the fuck out.

And no, there was no blood.
