Looking forward to losing an hour of sleep since I’ve been waking up at 4 am anyway!

@raven:
It’s the worst day of the year.

Lot’s of finger pointing in the Times this morning!
the lost puppy
Looks a lot like Mitt Romney in that FEMA coffin

@raven: Ha! Morning Ho can’t even pen his own fucking op-ed, he’s got to get a co-writer.

Sorry if this doesn’t work, no good at linky stuff

@raven: Good morning and fuck Scarborough and his big fat braying cheese head.
raven
@arguingwithsignposts: Our cable company is moving the analog channels to digital and started with MSNBC. I have tv’s all over the house but only two with digital so my mornin ho will be limited to the first half hour for now.
the lost puppy
One more thing, why do we have a problem with calling SS, Medicare, etc. “entitlements”? We ARE entitled to all these things, we paid for them.
I really wish our President would explain this simple concept to the nation and shut those bastards up.
WereBear
I loathe Daylight Savings Time. Why not just adjust school hours and such? Children go to school much too early; do we really have to stick them out on the street at the crack of dawn?
But that would create a cascade of domino effects where we operated society for the benefit of the 99%. Can’t have that.
the lost puppy
@raven: All Things Holy, my child, how do you do it?
raven
@the lost puppy: I like to see what the other side is up to. I listened to Boortz for 30 minutes a day before he left too.
eta, Hell, I watched Imus!
arguingwithsignposts
@WereBear: Or, they could just split 30 minutes both ways and call it even. :)
raven
No Joe or Mika today!
BillinGlendaleCA
On the news here in LALA land, we’re getting drones. They’re putting some out at Pt. Mugu.
@arguingwithsignposts: I guess that op-ed wore ol’ Joe Scar out, he and Mika are AWOL. I’m just watching for the ‘Happy Friday’ from Mike Allen.
Linda Featheringill
What? It’s Friday already? Damn! I got sidetracked this week by things that were needed and then by things that were fun and there is so much that wasn’t done. Phooey.
And three cheers for International Women’s Day.
BillinGlendaleCA
@raven: I used to watch Imus, but then again I was drinking.
raven
@BillinGlendaleCA: Looks to me like they are going to build them there?
WereBear
@arguingwithsignposts: Now that’s fair! :) I live far enough North now that you really see the swing in the seasons.
In case it helps, here is how to set the cats for DST.
BillinGlendaleCA
@raven: Not at Pt. Mugu, out at NG in Palmdale.
ETA: What most people don’t know, they’ve had drones at Pt. Mugu for 50 years. They used to use remote controlled aircraft to shoot missiles at.
Baud
@the lost puppy:
Ugh. I’m so sick of the “I was the President would say X” meme. It’s been so misused and overused that even where it is a valid criticism, I find it grating.
raven
@BillinGlendaleCA: “Amid a national debate on the use of military drones on U.S. soil, the Port Hueneme City Council voted to support the Navy’s plan to move production of unmanned aircraft to Ventura County.
MQ-4C Triton drones are currently produced at the Naval Air Weapons Station at China Lake. The proposal would move production about 160 miles southwest to the Naval Base Ventura County at Point Mugu.”?
BillinGlendaleCA
@raven: The 11pm news(KNBC) said they’d be based at Pt. Mugu, produced at Northrup Grumman in Palmdale. While Pt. Mugu probably has changed a great deal in the last 35 years, they usually don’t do the manufacture there(my dad worked there when I was a kid). Maybe they mean putting the wings on the body or something.
Older_Wiser
Back in 60s when we celebrated International Women’s Day we were called commies.
Women of the World, Unite! You have nothing to lose but your chains. : )
The rightwing continues the War on Women everywhere. But we fight back and won’t let up.
raven
@BillinGlendaleCA: I’ve only been through there once. My wife’s pop was a SeeBee and was there before going to the Pacific Theater.

@Baud:
“was” = “wish”
BillinGlendaleCA
What? No ‘Happy Friday’ on Morning Ho? How am I supposed to start my weekend?
WereBear
@Older_Wiser: I’ve been reading a lot about Quiverfull of late; absolutely chilling. Incubators who clean… that’s how they see women.

@BillinGlendaleCA:

Why do international women get a day? Men don’t get a day! Black people get all of February but us pooor downtrodden white men don’t get a month or even a day.
Linda Featheringill
@Schlemizel: #30
Ahhh, poor baby. :-)

@WereBear:
I have not heard much from those nutbags recently but a couple years back there was a bunch of stories on them that made me want to weep for humanity.
NBC has made celebrities out of one band of mad bombers of the population, the Duggars. NBC has them on one of their cable outlets and they are regulars on the Today show. Last thing I read on them was that the older girls have been pulled out of high school so they can stay home and help raise the litter their mother threw. THAT should be a subject for International Womens Day! Train them to be good little incubators who clean.
Reminds me of the scene from “Meaning Of Life” that leads to Every Sperm Is Sacred: “Get that would you, Deirdre.”
WereBear
Yep, that is what I think of, too.
We have a very challenging time ahead; not just climate change, but the social upheaval of technology and the monomaniacal destruction of the food supply by the likes of Monsanto.
We NEED every single talent and brain our vast population already possesses; yet there are so many societal pressures to murder and starve the truly unlucky… and turn the rest into Wal-Mart greeters.
All so the 1% can delude themselves that their own spawn are Worthy of all that has been heaped upon them. We are living in a celebration of the mediocre; in government, in media, in the mass arts, in medicine.
It has to stop.
Schlemizel
@WereBear:
STOP! Oh heavens no! How can there be true masters if there are no peons?
I’m sure the 1% fully support full quiver crap for the labor but never for themselves
Linda Featheringill
@Schlemizel:
Why don’t they HIRE some help? They are making money from all the shows they’re on and etc. Pulling your daughters out of school so she can help with your kids is a very white trash thing to do.
Anya
@raven: WTF is Jeffrey Sacks doing co writing a colum with that angry clown Joe Scarborough? When did Sacks turn into a wanker?
raven
@Anya: yes
Ash Can
@Linda Featheringill: To them, pulling the daughters out of school to do the work, as opposed to hiring someone else to do it, is the right thing to do because they’ve decreed that the girls will never work outside the home, so they don’t need the education. It’s worse than a white-trash thing to do; it’s outright abusive.
Cassidy
@Schlemizel: @Ash Can: Don’t they survive off of donations? Since they can’t actually provide for the kids, shouldn’t they be removed?
Schlemizel
@Cassidy:
My guess is that money from GE is more than enough even for a group that size. If it can make millionaires out of Gumbas and Gumars from Jersey it probably can support 25 people.
@Ash Can:
Exactly, abusive. But I think the real point is to drive home what their role in the world is, cooks, cleaners, producer and care provider for spawn.
liberal
Well-known economist pitches in with JoeScar.
(Not that it’s surprising, given Sachs is evil scum.)
mai naem
@Anya: I haven’t read the column but Sachs comes on Morning Ho quite a bit.
I really want a group of us to challenge Ho to live on the average person’s “entitlement” for just one month.I mean a concerted effort through Twitter(it would have to be done partly through Mika and Barnicle.) I am betting Ho spends more money on his regular living expenses in one day than an average person gets in “entitlements” a month.
mai naem
@liberal: Never thought of Sachs as scum. He actually seemed to be one of the few liberal on Morning Ho to actually not back down from his liberal views.

I was in my early teens when I first heard Judy Collins sing “Bread And Roses” and moved by the words. My mom knew a little bit about the Bread and Roses strike and that sent me on a mission to the library (the google of the Pleistocene era). I found that before it was a song it was a poem. It strikes me how relevant the words are in todays world
As we come marching, marching in the beauty of the day,
A million darkened kitchens, a thousand mill lofts gray,
Are touched with all the radiance that a sudden sun discloses,
For the people hear us singing: “Bread and roses! Bread and roses!”
As we come marching, marching, we battle too for men,
For they are women’s children, and we mother them again.
Our lives shall not be sweated from birth until life closes;
Hearts starve as well as bodies; give us bread, but give us roses!
As we come marching, marching, unnumbered women dead
Go crying through our singing their ancient cry for bread.
Small art and love and beauty their drudging spirits knew.
Yes, it is bread we fight for — but we fight for roses, too!
As we come marching, marching, we bring the greater days.
The rising of the women means the rising of the race.
No more the drudge and idler — ten that toil where one reposes,
But a sharing of life’s glories: Bread and roses! Bread and roses!

And from the local Athens paper:
“The Athens Young Professional Network launched the program that will distribute 5 Little Free Libraries around Athens to promote illiteracy in our community. ”
Yes!
WereBear
Their only future is to stay home and birth more litters. When it comes right down to it, do they even need to be literate?

great song, great slideshow, but the only thing missing is pictures of women from the Bread and Roses strike in Lawrence. heck, I would have settled for a single photo of Elizabeth Gurley Flynn.

Dropped Flossie off at the vets this morning to be spayed. I am going to be a basket case all day until they call and tell me she is okay.
raven
@Litlebritdifrnt: She’ll be fine. (My grandmother was a Flossie!)
WereBear
@Litlebritdifrnt: I’m the same way. I also fuss that they weigh the puppy THAT MORNING because dosage is vital when it comes to anesthesia.
Baud
Decent job numbers apparently.

@raven: @WereBear:
Yeah I know but I worry all the same. When I was in the Navy my boss dropped his beloved pooch off to be spayed and unfortunately her heart started racing on the table and she died. He was devastated because he never told her why she was going in he said to me “for all she knew I was taking her there to die”. Since then I always have “the talk” with my pets before they go in for surgery, I don’t know whether or not they understand but I want them to know that they are not being punished, that it is for their own good, and because we love them.
BTW her weight has doubled every time she goes to the vet, she was 40lbs this morning!

@raven:
Maybe next they can promote poverty, hunger, and disease.
Oh, wait, the Republicans have that covered.

I love Bread and Roses.
I should get out my Ladies Sewing Circle and Terrorist Society button to wear today.

@some guy: The anniversary of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire is coming up (March 25th). While none of my ancestors worked there, I did attend classes in the building (owned by NYU for many decades) and I feel connected to it.

Why is the buffoon Scarborough suddenly so prominent in the “liberal” media: his Kaplan Test Prep Daily op-ed today, his appearance on PBS/Charlie Rose this week, and a NYT op-ed last Saturday?
Doesn’t he get enough opportunity to spew his right-wing swill fifteen hours each week on his “Morning Joe” frat party on the “liberal” MSNBC?
Is a new book coming out? Is it a courtship ritual with CNN? Simply a reward for hippie-punching Paul Krugman? Something’s up, but how disgusting that this “stunningly superficial” blowhard is being taken seriously on national economic/fiscal matters.

@mai naem:
He’s complete, vile scum because of his role in the “shock therapy” applied to Eastern Europe/Russia.

In honor of International Women’s Day: Happy Birthday Cynthia Rothrock! A true model of female empowerment if ever there was one.

@Litlebritdifrnt:
I had a rueful laugh over this. My father was a doctor in the Air Force, and when he and my mother were coming back from Germany late in his career they had a similar thing happen with a stray cat they had adopted. He was the hospital commander at the time. Can you imagine being the lowly vet who has to inform the big boss that his pet died under your care?

From the Guardian (of course) for International Women’s Day, an interactive map on women’s political rights around the world:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/datablog/interactive/2013/mar/08/international-womens-day-political-rights
Moving the cursor to a particular country will highlight the year women were granted the right to vote; clicking onto a country provides a wealth of interesting data.

I just woke up. Has the outrage over bringing bin Laden’ son to New York for arraignment gone off the charts yet?

@WereBear:
We have found that it is very difficult to set the cats for DST when one of them can actually tell time to the minute.

If we’re all going to connect the labor movement and the women’s movement (and some immigrant rights as well), here’s a movie for everyone: Salt of the Earth.

Erik Loomis finds an interesting bit in a sorry obit that the AP business writer wrote on Hugo Chavez that gives us a wonderful in insight into the values and ethics of both the Government plutocratic elite and their courtier press:
Worst Chavez Obit
[ 120 ] March 7, 2013 | Erik Loomis
The coverage of Hugo Chavez’s death has been almost universally terrible. But this piece from Associated Press business reporter Pamela Simpson takes the cake:
Chavez invested Venezuela’s oil wealth into social programs including state-run food markets, cash benefits for poor families, free health clinics and education programs. But those gains were meager compared with the spectacular construction projects that oil riches spurred in glittering Middle Eastern cities, including the world’s tallest building in Dubai and plans for branches of the Louvre and Guggenheim museums in Abu Dhabi.
The true sign of national greatness–absurdly large skyscrapers and nice things for rich people.
This sums up much about the business community’s beliefs in 2013. Health care and education for the poor is a waste of money. Glitter and income inequality, that’s the ticket.
Jim Naureckas with more:
In case you’re curious about what kind of results this kooky agenda had, here’s a chart (NACLA, 10/8/12) based on World Bank poverty stats–showing the proportion of Venezuelans living on less than $2 a day falling from 35 percent to 13 percent over three years. (For comparison purposes, there’s a similar stat for Brazil, which made substantial but less dramatic progress against poverty over the same time period.)
Of course, during this time, the number of Venezuelans living in the world’s tallest building went from 0 percent to 0 percent, while the number of copies of the Mona Lisa remained flat, at none. So you have to say that Chavez’s presidency was overall pretty disappointing–at least by AP’s standards.
The new Gilded Age indeed.
Meanwhile, Major League Baseball provided its own classy moment, refusing to honor the request of the Venezuelan World Baseball Classic team for a moment of silence before an exhibition game against the Marlins.
Given that Jeffrey Loria is a far greater monster than Hugo Chavez could ever dream of being, this is particularly egregious. But at least Major League Baseball can now return to the unregulated exploitation of young Venezuelan boys.

This year (in September) it will be 120 years since all women won the right to vote (I believe Maori woman who owned land were allowed to vote earlier).
There’s still a lot that needs fixing for women in New Zealand but the fact that universal suffrage is now more than one generation away from living memory is something that I’m proud of.

Sorry I didn’t see this earlier. I’m in Moscow now, so International Women’s day has already passed. It’s a big deal here. There were men rushing around buying flowers and gifts and women carrying them. Kids got off school and a lot of businesses closed early the day before and stayed closed for Vocemy Marta. I’m here with my friend Natasha and staying with her mother’s friend Luda, so I bought flowers for them. We went to an art museum which was free for Women’s Day.
