Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Narcissists are always shocked to discover other people have agency.

We still have time to mess this up!

America is going up in flames. The NYTimes fawns over MAGA celebrities. No longer a real newspaper.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires.

The current Supreme Court is a dangerous, rogue court.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

It’s possible to be a liberal firebrand without crapping on the party.

“They all knew.”

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

The snowflake in chief appeared visibly frustrated when questioned by a reporter about egg prices.

We can’t confuse what’s necessary to win elections with the policies that we want to implement when we do.

These days, even the boring Republicans are nuts.

We know you aren’t a Democrat but since you seem confused let me help you.

Compromise? There is no middle ground between a firefighter and an arsonist.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

Mediocre white men think RFK Jr’s pathetic midlife crisis is inspirational. The bar is set so low for them, it’s subterranean.

American history and black history cannot be separated.

If you’re gonna whine, it’s time to resign!

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

Let’s bury these fuckers at the polls 2 years from now.

Find someone who loves you the way trump and maga love traitors.

There are some who say that there are too many strawmen arguments on this blog.

Anne Laurie is a fucking hero in so many ways. ~ Betty Cracker

If America since Jan 2025 hasn’t broken your heart, you haven’t loved her enough.

God bless people on the night shift who can’t remember their passwords. I’m on call, and I just made 2 hours of time and a half for about 10 minutes of work. Of course, now I can’t get back to sleep, but hey, money in the bank!

And one of the Newsmax headlines is (of course) total bullshit: “Obama wants ‘Unisex’ hats for Marines”
    Here’s the truth:

    @Soonergrunt:
I ‘d seen some mention of this. What hats go with military uniforms doesn’t sound like a matter that would rise to the President’s level. And if out of some treasonous motive he wanted to weaken the Marines as a fighting force, changing their hats seems a curiously indirect approach.

@Soonergrunt: Regardless of what happens, the Republican nominee in 2016 will run on getting rid of the girly caps Obama makes the marines wear and changing to what it used to be.

@Amir Khalid: Yeah–you’d think if he wanted to cripple the American military, he’d do it by filling up the procurement budget with cargo aircraft we don’t need like all the excess C-130s, and fighter jets that don’t fly well like the F-35.
Oh, wait, the Republicans do that.

Was it Nixon or Reagan who had the White House guards in uniforms that reminded one of the guards from an opera — you, lots of gold braid, fur hats (IIRC) (or was that the doormen at the Trump Tower on 5th Ave. who looked like the flying monkeys from the Wizard of Oz)? Sometimes presidents do get involved in the uniform decisions and it can result in ridiculousness aplenty.

    @PurpleGirl

The palace guard uniforms were Nixon (turns out they became real marching band uniforms, bought for a song, after being rather hurriedly phased out).

The equally hideous china service was Reagan.

At a cookout last May our hosts’ daughter and her friends treated us to a performance of Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call me Maybe”.

These were tweens. The whole thing, said the hostess, was borderline cute, seeing as her kid didn’t yet know what the words meant.

I assured the mom, “It could be much worse. Wait until she digs into your music collection and learns Hey, Big Spender or Let Me Entertain You“.

@Amir Khalid: look, our soldiers are teetering on the brink. The motives are worth investigating, especially given that this president once asked a marine to hold an umbrella so that he and the king of morocco wouldn’t get rained on.

I keep thinking that the blue suits are going to have a real case of the blues when somebody figures out that you can slip a remote control package into a cheap A-10 and run ground pounding safely from afar. From there, somebody else can make the same realization about slipping such packages into cheap F-4s, F-5s and F-16s to handle intercept and CAP, and old dumb B-52s for strategic bombing. In 20 years’ time, the USAF could be whittled down to mostly transports, tankers, helos and air control, with the vast majority of its personnel consisting of the equivalent of gamers. It would be hella cheaper. Navy and Marine aviation could/should similarly wither as well, assuming that my A-10 solution can be adapted for carrier use.

@Botsplainer: They are using phantoms as drones now.

“Phantom II production ended in the United States in 1979 after 5,195 had been built (5,057 by McDonnell Douglas and 138 in Japan by Mitsubishi).[2] Of these, 2,874 went to the USAF, 1,264 to the Navy and Marine Corps, and the rest to foreign customers.[2] The last U.S.-built F-4 went to Turkey, while the last F-4 built was an F-4EJ built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Japan and delivered on 20 May 1981.[28] As of 2008, 631 Phantoms were in service worldwide,[29] while the Phantom also remains in use as a target drone operated by the U.S. military.”

    October 26, 2013 at 8:08 am

@raven: They are also using F-16A’s from the Davis-Monthan boneyard. The first QF-16A remotely piloted target drone was just tested at Tyndall AFB in Florida last month, since they’re almost out of F-4s.

Just an observation of my surroundings.

I live at the edge of town. Farm fields on 2 sides. Been here 4 years now. There was always a family of screech owls living in my neighbors tree. Well about a month ago we started hearing a barn owl. You can tell because the screech owls just screech and squack, they’re little as far as owls go. Barn owls hoot. But I’ve noticed the screech owls are now nowhere to be seen. Saw the guy yesterday. Big. Hope he didn’t chase the others off. Oh well, life in the country.

More than enough field mice to go around. Especially now when they’re trying to find warmer homes for the winter. We won’t go into what champs my cats think they are.

@kindness: The screech owls more than likely moved on, but the barn owl makes me happier. They’re endangered due to habitat loss, so having a mating pair is a good sign the local ecology is at least less stressed. Plus they’re good luck.
