Obviously I hope the Mountaineers win, but what I really want to see is a solid football game. I just feel like the Mountaineers were never very consistent this season. It would be nice to see them go out with a win and having played a solid game.
And, of course, it would be nice to win one for the Seniors.
*** Update ***
Based on the first ten minutes, it looks like we might have a defensive struggle on our hands.
*** Update #2 ***
Before there is too much crying from WVU fans, that was a clear safety and the refs made the right call. More importantly, it was a hideous play call. Who the hell is in the OC’s booth? Don Nehlen?
*** Update #3 ***
31-30, Eeers. A win is a win, so I will take it. You know you are a Mountaineer fan when you intercept the ball with under two minutes left, and are convinced as your LB is running it back that he will fumble it, the other team will pick it up and run it back, so you are standing in your living room screaming “GO DOWN GO DOWN GO DOWN DAMNIT TO HELL JUST GO DOWN!”
At any rate, seemed like a clean game with minimal scrapping and no cheap shots, which really reflects well on WVU and UNC. Good game.
Blackacre
UConn fan who enjoys your site. I went to the UConn/WVU game in CT this year and the many Eers fans that made the trip were all class. Good luck – I’ll be rooting for you guys today.
jonst
I just want the "Eers" to win by 3.
erg
go eers!
-from a unc student who is, at heart, a wolfpack fan.
Pb
Go, er, team. As an NCSU grad who works for the system and likes UNC well enough, honestly, if it isn’t basketball, we don’t really care that much down here.
Punchy
Need a high scoring game. At least mah bank account does. (checks score…..so far, so good)
bago
Eels. It’s pronounced eels.
ChrisB
@Punchy: 28 points in 10 minutes, looks like you’re getting your wish.
Correction: 35 points in 12 1/2 minutes!
Punchy
Wow. Wrote previous post at 7-7. Now I’m giddy. Xmas presents paid for with one savvy move…

I haven’t followed college football in a long time, but I’m just shaking my head at the name of these fucking bowl games. The Meineke Car Care Bowl? The PapaJohns.com Bowl? The (god give me strength)… Chick-Fil-A Bowl?
I know Division I football is all about money, but what the fuck?
Punchy
Waingro — no offense, but where have u been for the past…..er…..dozen years?
By the way, what does the website Insight.com akshully sell/do/pimp?
scott
sorry john…just caught that safety…and you were talking about consistency!
pseudonymous in nc
Computer kit for corporations. Basically, NewEgg in a suit.
I’ll give Chik Fil-A a pass for eating up the Peach Bowl’s sponsorship rights, mainly because it’s a long-term commitment, and they come up with suitably daft promotions. The here today, gone tomorrow one-year title rights are more annoying.
Laura W
@Punchy: Here’s hoping that crock pot was at least top-o’-the-line.
scott
also i can think of no better reason for a playoff system than the fact we’re forced to watch something called the Meineke Car Care Bowl
Waingro
Waingro—no offense, but where have u been for the past…..er…..dozen years?
I haven’t followed college football in literally..er.. fifteen years or so, which would seem to coincide with the profileration of obnoxiously commercialized bowl names.
Now if you kids would kindly remove yourself from my lawn.
Third Eye Open
John,
Whats up with the waiving fingers from the crowd? Are they trying to summon angry mountain-dwarfs, or something?
KG
what’s most annoying is that all these corporate named bowls use to have real names that have been supplanted. At least the Rose Bowl held out for the longest time and made it "the Rose Bowl presented by [insert name of bankrupt corporation here]"

I always root for West Virginia except when they are playing Rutgers. I’m especially hoping for a win since we got trounced by UNC before we decided to actually start playing this season.
Looking forward to us destroying the Wolfpack on Monday in that horribly-named Papajohns.com Bowl to offset the smackdown @ NC our basketball team is going to get tomorrow.
john b
as an an nc state fan. i am torn on who to pull for in this game. but i mostly feel myself hoping the heels lose. call it natural instinct.
ahah. good to see erg and i on the same wavelength, even though she’s still on the other side of the country.
ChrisB
@Ed in NJ: UNC, Pitt and UConn this week. A little tougher that Bryant and NJIT.
I read this morning that this was the only time anyone could find a team playing the top three teams in the country one after the other.
Punchy
This game has more scoring than a Delta Chi frat party.
burnspbesq
Go Eers! My second favorite team is whoever’s playing the Tarholes.
And in the spirit of trying to offend as many people as possible, if there are any Kentucky fans out there, aren’t you just tickled pink to see that Tubby has Minnesota in the Top 25? Y’all treated a fne man and an outstanding coach like dirt, and seeing him succeed at Minnesota is your punishment. Oh, and one other thing: Christan Laettner sends you his best wishes for the holidays.
john b
i wouldn’t be so confident. have you seen russell wilson play?
Face
What position does Pat White play in the NFL next year? For that matter, what the hell position does Tebow expect to play?
John, please don’t forget a NFL thread tomorrow. Big day for playoff bubble teams!
burnspbesq
@ChrisB:
Georgetown’s schedule is at least as bad, if not worse. In the next three weeks, the Hoyas play UConn, Pitt, Syracuse, and Duke.
John Cole
@Face: Twelfth Man. He will be playing MLB if he is smart.
john b
i believe that is ballgame.
john b
you see that was the anti-jinx, perfectly executed
scruncher
Go Eers! Go Badgers! Go Broncos! Go Bulldogs! Go Sooners!
Comrade Kevin
That was an atrocious interception by UNC there.
JL
Congrats to the eers!
Blackacre
Great game. Congrats to WVU and the Big East!
ChrisB
Good for Pat White. When asked in the post-game "what did you prove today," he answered "we," not "I." His shout out to his teammate who didn’t play (Hogan #22) was also commendable.
John Cole, think White should play in the CFL?
Also, we may need a Rutgers-NC State thread on Monday.
Burnspbesq, yeah, that’s brutal. The difference is that the Hoyas can play with those teams.
scruncher
Great game. Congrats to the eers much-maligned coach too.
Go Badgers!

If your neighbors start looking at you funny, you’ll have no one to blame but yourself.
Jimbo
Nice win! And your coach’s interview with Rob Stone after the game is an instant classic! He could coach my team anytime…
Matt
haha, my Dad I were yelling that in harmony here in Morgantown.
Mazacote Yorquest
Oh well, I was cheering for the Heels, but at least Davis has them going in the right direction. Not too sad WVU won– I like the team and Stewart– his telling White "I love you, son" coming off the field last year was heart-wrenching.
But let’s be real– that catch by Hakim Nicks was sicker than anything we’ll see from the NFL tomorrow.
CT
Fun game-I love watching White play-although I’ve never seen him throw so much as he did today. Very cool seeing his Dad singing along with John Denver after the game. Has all the passing been typical of WVU this year since Slaton left? I liked their more running oriented offense-my team, Oregon, has been running that the past couple of years, and its a blast to watch.
wilson
That might’ve been his last game at Carolina, but it’s been nice watching Nicks while he was here, and I wish him all the best at the next level.
Congrats to the "Eers" on the victory. Hope we get the chance to return the favor in the hoop sport!
J.D. Rhoades
UNC fan here. It was a good game. Congrats, WVA fans!
I did love the catch Hakeem Nicks made using both hands and his ass.
Glenn Fayard
Watching the first quarter, I was thinking "Nicks is the greatest receiver I’ve ever seen and will end the game with 400 yards receiving." So I was a little disappointed when he didn’t. Then I noticed he had more receiving yards than his quarterback had passing yards. That’s… nuts.
charles pierce
That kid linebacker who made the last pick isn’t going to pay for a bottle of ‘shine…er…dinner in Morgantown for the rest of his life. And Pat White is really the only qb ever to start and win four bowl games? That’s a great stat.
Ed in NJ
I have. But Mike Teel is the hottest QB in the country, and Kenny Britt is unstoppable, the best WR in the nation that no one has heard of.
The difference is the Ds. NC State will put up some points, but Rutgers defends mobile QBs better than anyone because of the defensive speed. NC State’s weakness is the defensive backfield. We’re going to eat them alive.
Should be fun. Matchup of the two hottest teams with the most impressive turnarounds this season.
