Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

The fundamental promise of conservatism all over the world is a return to an idealized past that never existed.

Optimism opens the door to great things.

“I was told there would be no fact checking.”

Republicans want to make it harder to vote and easier for them to cheat.

I swear, each month of 2025 will have its own history degree.

Narcissists are always shocked to discover other people have agency.

Hi god, it’s us. Thanks a heap, you’re having a great week and it’s only Thursday!

Someone should tell Republicans that violence is the last refuge of the incompetent, or possibly the first.

This fight is for everything.

The world has changed, and neither one recognizes it.

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

If you’re gonna whine, it’s time to resign!

The desire to stay informed is directly at odds with the need to not be constantly enraged.

The unpunished coup was a training exercise.

The rest of the comments were smacking Boebert like she was a piñata.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

Hell hath no fury like a farmer bankrupted.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires.

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

Republicans: The threats are dire, but my tickets are non-refundable!

Wait, what?

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

Late Night Open Thread

Spent most of the night setting up the new iMac and trying to setup bootcamp (I failed but I got to watch soccer all day while rearranging the office), and am now just winding down watching a little tube.

Actually watching one of my favorite dvd’s, Patrice O’Neal- Elephant in the Room, and laughing like I am watching it for the first time even though I have seen it several dozen times. It’s so completely wrong, but just genius. His facial expressions and delivery and the way he effortlessly works the front rows is just fucking brilliant, even though it’s so damn wrong.

Marking essays between trawling the internet. Also, this made me smirk: What World Cup teams would look like if immigrants weren’t allowed to play.

Sort of surprised there have been no draws thus far. I’m gonna err on the side of hopefulness for a friend and say the first one will come tomorrow between France and Honduras. And barring upsets I’m assuming it’ll be Argentina over B&H and Switzerland over Ecuador.

You don’t need Bootcamp to run VMFusion or Parallels. Just pick the one you want and install it (both are excellent–I’ve got Fusion and it works great). Then install your Windows OS to make a virtual machine and you’re good to go.

BTW, with Fusion you can take screenshots that land on your Mac desktop if you want. Hold down command+shift and hit the 3 key. Have fun!

If you’re not too far along, a good way to go is to divide up that big 1T HD into partitions, 4 or five at least. You can install Windows on one duplicate your boot drive for redundancy, put Linux on another, and have a couple left over for future installs and tests.

Use the install disk to divvy up the HD.

@The Pale Scot: I used to be a fan of multiple partitions, but now it’s too much of a hassle. It always seems like what you want is on the other partition, and if it is in a different OS format, getting the stuff off can be a pain. And then there’s backups…

If someone wants to play with different OSes these days, it makes more sense to use a dedicated external HD on a reasonably fast interface instead. Thunderbolt/USB3/eSATA all make that relatively painless now.

    My $0.02.

    Cheers,
    Scott.

I just bought an imac a few days ago. There’s a program called Synergy you can use that lets you run it next to your old PC. One mouse, one keyboard, when the mouse is on the imac you’re using the imac, when it’s on the PC you’re using the PC. Pretty cool, no need to migrate all the junk from your old computer.
