If I was an assistant referee on that game, at the end of the clip I would be concerned first for the health and safety of my center and secondly, I would be devoting quite a bit of time as to what type of beer he is buying the crew. Traditionally in my college group, getting hit by the ball means the center owes the crew a drink. I’m thinking that this incident would be at least a three beer hit.

My biggest problem with the entire sequence is positioning. I can’t figure out why the referee is on the AR-1 side of the field with the corner kick on the AR side. His back is to his best and nearest place of help, he can’t see a significant chunk of the mixer and if the ball is punched wide to the far side, he is out of position. Getting ten yards to the far side of the penalty arc would have cleared the space.

    Ouch! The Ref isn’t going to look good in the match report, that’s for sure.

    Hey, how about that idiot Big Sam Allardyce? Guy gets hired for a three-million quid a year job, and the first thing he does is try to line up a side gig at 400K quid a year, showing people how to get around the player transfer rules.

    @Amir Khalid: I heard some BBC reporting on that in the last day or so. They played a tape of him in a noisy bar talking about how to get around the rules about hidden ownership of teams/players, etc., etc. It’s just mind-bogglingly stupid.

    Feelings of entitlement and hubris seem to go hand-in-hand with these sports/entertainment monopolies (NFL, FIFA, F1, Olympics, etc.). I wonder if anything will change without national governments coming down hard on this stuff (anti-trust lawsuits and the like).

    Big Sam had been lusting after the England manager’s job for years, only to be undone by a Daily Telegraph sting. It’s not a week-in, week-out job like a first-team manager’s gig at a club, of course, but it’s way more stressful because national pride is at stake in those few matches that England does play. I did wonder about Big Sam’s temperament when he said he wasn’t the boss of England captain Wayne Rooney.

    The FA should have known what they might get into with Big Sam. He has a history of suspicion and ten years ago he and his agent son were accused of irregularities in a Panorama program. That went nowhere despite a fairly thorough outside investigation, because the FA pushed the hot potato of suspicious cases to FIFA ad FIFA waited 18 months until declaring it an old story.

    Wow, Howard Dean is going off on the media this morning. The host is trying to go all Erin Burnett on him about how bad he is for implying Trump does cocaine, but he’s having none of it. He’s turning it into a critique about how the media let Trump get away with the same thing for months. Good for Gov. Dean! Trump *deserves* the crazy innuendo because he’s trafficked in it for years.

    Well, you might see a referee in that space for a throw-in on that side if previous throws had proven to be short ones, but this looked like a it was during a corner.

    Fortunately, thanks to the recent NCAA rule changes, the referee is allowed to substitute and the re-enter the match, even during the first half, if the substitution is in order to assess a head injury.

    Oh, wait… that rule is only for players…

    @Victor Matheson: actually a serious question.

    Let’s assume play continued as the ref was down. Let’s assume the ref is incapable of blowing his whistle due to injury/getting knocked out. Who has the authority to stop play or sanction a player for a foul or misconduct if the referee is knocked out?

    I always keep a whistle in my back pocket when I run a line w/o a 4th just in case but does the AR have any authority? All our power derives from what the referee grants to us. We provide information for the ref to cobsider. We do not have the explicit power to do anything besides give the ref recommendations.

    Personally I am blowing the whistle. But what happens in mass confrontation or a dogso before whistle is blown ?
