Shuster is good and he is underrated. He has his own show, it’s just not in prime time. Between Rick Sanchez on CNN and David Shuster on MSNBC, we should continue to have some good laughs at Fox News and their shenanigans. Shuster used to be at Fox so he has a great perspective on them.

Looks like two sides of the same coin, to me. The outrage and foot-stomping (especially from a blogger already mad because she’s not getting any action… tea-bagging or otherwise) seems to be one-sided… maybe CNN has it right by just ignoring the whole thing altogether until AFTER the events have occurred and then determining whether it is newsworthy or not.

The only problem I have with Shuster is that when he has a guest known to use parody or humor as part of their delivery, he giggles like a chipmunk all through the intereview no matter what the guest is saying. He needs to filter that giggle.

It’s just a side benefit. But what’s the option here? You can’t have a reasoned debate on the issues with people whose political demands are incoherent. What is it these people want? No taxes? That’s not gonna happen unless you want to dismantle the entire government; that shit’s gotta get paid for somehow. Lower taxes? Obama just passed the largest middle-class tax cut in American history. Lower taxes on rich people? Not exactly a stirring call to populist arms.

It’s not the hype that’s the issue so much as the complete avoidance of facts. MSNBC, for instance, was successfully able to overview the events of the Boston Tea Party. By contrast, FOX referenced a news clip of theirs that didn’t exist.

Secondly both Rachel Maddow and David Shuster have discussed how ridiculous it is for the Tea Baggers to be protesting an increase of 3 percent only on the top 5% of Americans. But what it comes down to is that at this point most of the Tea Baggers don’t even know what they are protesting. Some think its gay marriage. Others think its the deficit. Still others think its abortion. None of which have anything to do with the original Boston Tea Party
I will be damned if anybody tells me I can’t laugh at the idiots participating in this lunacy. What some may not understand is that there might be those out there who believe that these Tea Bagging parties are legit and don’t realize that everybody is laughing at them. Probably more than half the country knows what teabagging is, in the slang sense. The ones who don’t are too young, too old, or too conservative. The latter group had the bright idea of giving their flagship anti-government campaign a name so prima facie ridiculous, it’s still an open question whether or not the organizers are trolling their own party. It’s like if some animal rights group decided to mount an anti-fur-wearing campaign by encouraging everyone to go "bareback" and calling themselves "barebackers".
We could get serious, and make like the history teacher everyone hated in high school by lecturing the country on the history of the Boston What a Waste of Perfectly Good Tea Party. That’ll sure win votes.
We could get serious, and start talking about effective tax rates. There are millions of Americans suffering from insomnia who will thank you.
We could shut the fuck up, and let them look like idiots on their lonesome, banking on the fact that more than half the country is already snickering at them.

What you miss, joes527, is that the utter tone-deafness of the right wing (particularly the corporate-sponsored, FNC-covered, "grassroots protest" right-wing) in using "tea bag" as a verb and gerund form in referring to their protests is itself newsworthy. The constant mockery of the association of the term is reporting on how this so-called "movement" is so collectively clueless as to fail at avoiding such ridiculous associations.
Beyond that, Shuster managed to score additional news points by enumerating the connections between the Teabaggers and their copious corporate and political sponsorship. While much of the beginning of the segment was balls-on-forehead level snark, there is actual news content, showing how the ludicrously named series of protests is about the farthest thing from "populist" and "grassroots" as you can get.

The election was six months ago, and the good guys won. The midterm elections aren’t for 18 months, and in the Senate at least, the Republicans are defending more seats than the Democrats. Call it the downside of their wins in 2004. By 2012, outcomes in both the White House and Congress will depend more than anything else on the economy. (In 2012, the Democrats will also suffer from the same problem in the Senate that the Republicans will face in 2010, because 2006 was good for the left.)
Or did you mean votes in Congress? Heh, yeah, that’s true, the more seriously we take right-wing nuts, the more Republicans and Blue Dogs will reject them. Wait, what?
In none of these situations does the tone of commentary in early 2009 matter. Therefore the reverse is true: when thinking about the tea parties, votes don’t matter. If we manage to point out how crazy these people are and how closely they’re tied to the Republican Party, it’s a nice side benefit, but we’re all just enjoying ourselves here.

If a guy walks out of his house every morning, and treads on a rake which then whacks him in the nuts – every single morning – it doesn’t make you look stupid to laugh at it every single morning. It makes him look stupid for getting hit in the love spuds every damn morning. It’s a real-life running gag.
The fact it has gone on so long, with so many people buying in, without these people realizing how stupid it looks, makes it funnier. If someone runs in 2012 under the slogan "Let’s teabag America!" I may well die laughing, as may many Americans.
