Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

No one could have predicted…

Narcissists are always shocked to discover other people have agency.

Jack Smith: “Why did you start campaigning in the middle of my investigation?!”

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

It is possible to do the right thing without the promise of a cookie.

When we show up, we win.

Dear media: perhaps we ought to let Donald Trump speak for himself!

People really shouldn’t expect the government to help after they watched the GOP drown it in a bathtub.

They don’t have outfits that big. nor codpieces that small.

Compromise? There is no middle ground between a firefighter and an arsonist.

We need to vote them all out and restore sane Democratic government.

Not rolling over. fuck you, make me.

“Loving your country does not mean lying about its history.”

I really should read my own blog.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

Republican also-rans: four mules fighting over a turnip.

America is going up in flames. The NYTimes fawns over MAGA celebrities. No longer a real newspaper.

Boeing: repeatedly making the case for high speed rail.

A tremendous foreign policy asset… to all of our adversaries.

“Until such time as the world ends, we will act as though it intends to spin on.”

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

Bark louder, little dog.

Lick the third rail, it tastes like chocolate!

On the Road and In Your Backyard

On the Road is a weekday feature spotlighting reader photo submissions.

From the exotic to the familiar, whether you’re traveling or in your own backyard, we would love to see the world through your eyes.

Submit Your Photos

Good Morning All,

This weekday feature is for Juicers who are are on the road, traveling, or just want to share a little bit of their world via stories and pictures. So many of us rise each morning, eager for something beautiful, inspiring, amazing, subtle, of note, and our community delivers – a view into their world, whether they’re far away or close to home – pictures with a story, with context, with meaning, sometimes just beauty. By concentrating travel updates and tips here, it’s easier for all of us to keep up or find them later.

So please, speak up and share some of your adventures and travel news here, and submit your pictures using our speedy, secure form. You can submit up to 7 pictures at a time, with an overall description and one for each picture.

You can, of course, send an email with pictures if the form gives you trouble, or if you are trying to submit something special, like a zipped archive or a movie. If your pictures are already hosted online, then please email the links with your descriptions.

For each picture, it’s best to provide your commenter screenname, description, where it was taken, and date. It’s tough to keep everyone’s email address and screenname straight, so don’t assume that I remember it “from last time”. More and more, the first photo before the fold will be from a commenter, so making it easy to locate the screenname when I’ve found a compelling photo is crucial.

Have a wonderful day, and enjoy the pictures!

Inspiration today – Hawaii!

Today, pictures from valued commenter Joey Maloney.

I’m visiting family on the Big Island of Hawaii. I was in downtown Hilo this morning for the farmer’s market and I took a few shots.

There’s a gazebo on the Hilo bayfront where some area homeless hang out by day. The trees in the background are the ancient City of Refuge, a small island in Hilo Bay.

A panoramic shot of Hilo Bay. It was kind of a grey day but if you download and view the pic at full size there’s lots of interesting detail

Hilo’s gone on a street art binge since I was last here a year ago. Wacky murals like this are everywhere in the downtown. See if you can spot the Dukakis/Bentsen bumpersticker.

Thank you so much Joey Maloney, do send us more when you can.

Travel safely everybody, and do share some stories in the comments, even if you’re joining the conversation late. Many folks confide that they go back and read old threads, one reason these are available on the Quick Links menu.

One again, to submit pictures: Use the Form or Send an Email

    @OzarkHillbilly:

I’m an even bigger fan of train graffiti – you can compare as it rolls by. Some is really beautiful.

@Le Comte de Monte Cristo, fka Edmund Dantes: The floodwall south of downtown St. Louis has been given over to street artists. Some really cool stuff on it, in a constant state of renewal.

Hilo no ka oi! (roughly = “Hilo’s the best!”) I lived on Lanikaula St. for about 5 years, and up the coast in Papaikou for a year before that back around the turn of the century, and I dearly miss the friends I made there. I arrived soon after the removal of sugar price supports and subsequent collapse of the sugar industry, which devastated the local economy — it reminded me so much of the collapse of steel where I grew up that I used to call it “Wheeling-by-the-Sea.” Unlike Kona on the west side of the island, the east side coast from Ka’u to Waipio Valley is mostly rocky & rainy, without the classic sun/sand/surf that most people think of when they hear “Hawaii.” Hilo and the eastside have been fighting back ever since Big Sugar left, and the recent infusion of street art is part of that effort. Be sure to check out Suisan Fishmarket for some *real* poke, and stop for a burger & a beer at Cronies’ on the corner of Waianuenue & Kamehameha Ave. while you’re there!

Love the big island, go there every year around February 1. Which is why I am currently in a hospital bed with a less than 24 hour old new right hip.
