On the Road is a weekday feature spotlighting reader photo submissions.
From the exotic to the familiar, whether you’re traveling or in your own backyard, we would love to see the world through your eyes.
Good Morning All,
This weekday feature is for Juicers who are are on the road, traveling, or just want to share a little bit of their world via stories and pictures. So many of us rise each morning, eager for something beautiful, inspiring, amazing, subtle, of note, and our community delivers – a view into their world, whether they’re far away or close to home – pictures with a story, with context, with meaning, sometimes just beauty. By concentrating travel updates and tips here, it’s easier for all of us to keep up or find them later.
So please, speak up and share some of your adventures and travel news here, and submit your pictures using our speedy, secure form. You can submit up to 7 pictures at a time, with an overall description and one for each picture.
You can, of course, send an email with pictures if the form gives you trouble, or if you are trying to submit something special, like a zipped archive or a movie. If your pictures are already hosted online, then please email the links with your descriptions.
For each picture, it’s best to provide your commenter screenname, description, where it was taken, and date. It’s tough to keep everyone’s email address and screenname straight, so don’t assume that I remember it “from last time”. More and more, the first photo before the fold will be from a commenter, so making it easy to locate the screenname when I’ve found a compelling photo is crucial.
Have a wonderful day, and enjoy the pictures!
I had trouble with otmar’s post, so we have these wonderful alternatives! Jerzy has submitted more, so this is part one.
Today, pictures from valued commenter Jerzy Russian.
Went on a trip to Belgium, Switzerland, Germany, and The Netherlands during the summer of 2017. In this contribution I wish to share some pictures taken during visits to two of the smaller museums in Amsterdam. The first stop was Katten Kabinet, which is a small museum dedicated to art that images of cats. It occupied a few floors of a modest sized house, plus a back yard. The pictures shown are from the yard. The second stop was the Amsterdam Tulip Museum, which, as one might guess, is a museum dedicated to the bulb trade in The Netherlands. There were lots of interesting displays about the history of the tulip trade, and lots of cool photographs of bulb fields. The actual bulb fields were not in bloom during our visit, so this was the next best thing.

In addition to all of the paintings and posters with pictures of cats, they also have real cats in residence.
Here is a poster of some kind of liquor ad that features cats.

A poster for the Disney movie “A Cat From Outer Space”, but in Italian (?).
Here is the outside of the Tulip Museum, which is not far from the Anne Frank House.
Some pictures of pictures of tulips.
More tulips.
And still more tulips.
Thank you so much Jerzy Russian, do send us more when you can.
Travel safely everybody, and do share some stories in the comments, even if you’re joining the conversation late. Many folks confide that they go back and read old threads, one reason these are available on the Quick Links menu.
One again, to submit pictures: Use the Form or Send an Email

Nice shots. The Amsterdam Tulip Museum’s main signage is in English?

@p.a.:
Understandable for a tourist attraction, I guess.

Lovely pics! I think I still have a copy of The Cat Made Me Buy It… but I didn’t know till now about the sequel, The Cat Sold It…

Neat pictures. Thanks Jerzy.
In other news, the OPM closed the federal government in DC today on account of the wind storm going through the area. The NWS is saying 30-45 mph winds with gusts to 55 mph through tonight – and gusts remaining in the 40s through Satuday. It’s a bit surprising to me that the OPM did that, but sensible (the area (especially in Maryland) used to be notorious for power outages from fallen trees, but maybe we’ll be lucky this time).
Fingers crossed for everyone in its path.
Cheers,
Scott.

@p.a.:
Just about everybody I’ve met who was from the Netherlands speaks better English than I do.

@Another Scott: Our weather station in Frederick, MD has recorded a 46 mph gust. winds are consistently over 30 mph since about 4 am. Winds in the 20s from about 11:30 last night. It was a real sharp transition: zero wind all day yesterday and then went to 20-25 mph in less than 10 minutes. Just about time to get the work laptop set up on the kitchen table and commence telecommuting.

My thoughts also, but I would also have expected maybe a bit of a “we must protect this house” attitude about their native tongue. I don’t consider that a negative thing. And Tulpmuseum Amsterdam (Google trans) should be understandable even to Americans. (Guess I’m an optimist.)

I’m spending the morning listening to the wind and the rain and waiting for the heating/plumbing guy to come and replace my defunct water heater. Hoping the high end of the rain estimates don’t materialize, because that might mean (cold) water in my basement, and I can only deal with one water-related issue at a time.
Another Scott
@Gin & Tonic: Plumbing issues are up there with my least favorite things. Good luck!!
Cheers,
Scott.

Cats, booze, and tulips! Excellent.
I have planted so many tulip bulbs only to have the deer eat them.

Morning to Poco and the tribe ???

@Gin & Tonic: Your comment reminded me of the time that every single water-based appliance of mine went out at the same time. Not fun! It turned out that there had been some sort of electrical surge related to the hot water lines – it was decades ago so I can’t recall the specifics, but it was something like that – so my insurance covered everything but the deductible.
WaterGirl
@MomSense: I recall the first year I planted tulips, it must have been over 30 years ago. I came home one evening after dark and in the headlights I could see the bunny sheer off the top of a tulip. Thus began my chant “death to bunnies” every time I pulled into the driveway that year.
Gin & Tonic
@WaterGirl: Well, I’m not that “lucky.” My water heater just gave up the ghost after a bit over two decades of faithful service. It’s an “indirect-fired” unit (it gets its heat from my furnace), so long life is expected. Rumor had it that these units have a lifetime warranty, but for that to be valid you need the serial number, but they put the serial number on the control panel, and I had my control panel replaced about 6-7 years ago. The replacement control panels don’t carry a serial number, and I don’t have a record of the number from the original install. The original installer/maintainer was a sole-proprietor type of contractor, who has died, and his family destroyed his business records. Long story short, I’m buying a new unit at full price. But hey, they’re manufactured in-state, so at least I’m keeping my money local.
WaterGirl
@Gin & Tonic: That calamity of errors would almost be funny if it wasn’t such a crappy thing for you. Two decades of faithful service, you’ve got to respect that. I’m guessing that they don’t make them like they used to, but I am hoping you are happy with the new one. If it ever gets here!

@rikyrah: Morning Quinerly! We’re northbound today out of SC wrapping up our 4th Annual Snowbird Road Trip. I worked out a deal with mgmt last year to take February off without pay. It’s been great! So glad I married a Road Tripper!

@WaterGirl:
Death to bunnies is the kind of thing you don’t want the neighborhood kids to hear!
Gin & Tonic
@WaterGirl: They are working on it as I type this.
Jerzy Russian
@p.a.:
Yes, as I recall. Most people speak English pretty well, and a lot of places have signs in English.
Jerzy Russian
@p.a.:
Still early in the morning for me. Yes, the outside sign is in English, but in the above comment I was referring to the signs inside, which were both English and Dutch.
I am told that part of the reason people there speak English so well is that the imported TV shows from Britain and the U.S. are not dubbed, they just have subtitles. Thus you can hear the actors speaking normally. If you go to Germany, most of the shows are dubbed. I once saw a commercial there for Star Wars, and Yoda spoke German, which was pretty weird.
Jerzy Russian
@Anne Laurie: Thanks for the link to those books. Will order one for my daughter since she is the one who suggested the visit to Katten Kabinet.

Very cool!
WaterGirl
@MomSense: I could never do it, of course! But it was a fun outlet for my frustrations. I could have forgiven the bunnies if they could have just razored them off further down the stem instead of an inch below the flower. Bastards.
WaterGirl
@Gin & Tonic: Yay!
Miss Bianca
@PAM Dirac: y’all are making me laugh. Our wind gusts (listening to them now!) routinely get up past the 50 -60 mph range and jump up into the 70s and 80s and not infrequently break 100 mph.

Well, we’re sitting at the gate in LAX, waiting for the flight to Baja, after a short night at the hotel. It’s 55 and raining here… go figure, our first time in LA ANF it’s raining!

@Jerzy Russian:
On my Eurotrash cable channel MHz they run a German series based on Donna Leon’s Commissario Brunetti novels. Pretty well done—good production values, exteriors shot in Venice—but everyone is speaking German. “Italians” speaking German. That is weird.

Nice Pictures.
Alain, so you want me to resubmit my last batch?
