Unlike some people, I actually did just quit my job. As I stepped out to clear my head, what did I see but majestic deer and scampering lizards on a beautiful Bay Area September day?
How’s your Monday going?

What? It’s not Rosenstein….

I just finished my daily 5 mile walk. Will see if I can make it into work by noon.

In case you missed my congratulations in the previous thread… yay! So glad the conversation went well. Nice that they want you as long as possible and are sad that you will be leaving.

M4 – congratulations. I had the pleasure of a “fuck you” job quitting experience wherein I did not burn bridges (mainly because I gave 4 months notice). I revisit that memory from time to time because it was delicious.

There are currently 6 GOP women senators. Why are the 4 getting a pass on Kavanaugh? Can a reporter please ask them if they will vote for a sexual predator?

I am alternating between hanging breathlessly on the blog’s latest postings, and trying to get other business taken care of. Because, priorities!
Also, congrats on the resignation and the new job! Missed the announcement of the latter, what are you going to be doing in NYC?

@Martin: This is his signal, i presume, that if they want him gone, they’re gonna have to stick their necks out and do it. He’s not going to make it easy on them. Is that your take, also?

Given the total disaster North Carolina has become, perhaps its time to take a page from the comics and declare the whole state “No Man’s Land” after evacuating all of the Non-Trump supporters from the state.
The remainder can have their very own Galt’s Gulch.

Really great poll on Amendment 4 (restoration of ex-felon voter rights) in Florida:
– 71/21% of likely Florida voters are in favor
– Democrats are 83/10% in favor
– Reps are 62/31% in favor
– 69% of whites are a yes
– 65% of Hispanics are a yes
– 82% of blacks are a yes
The ballot initiative has to pass by 60% to take effect. I devoted more time to collecting signatures for the initiative than anything else I’ve done for the party all year, aside from registering voters, but to be honest, I had serious doubts it would garner the necessary 60%. Not counting chickens before they hatch, but this poll looks good!
It has the potential to be huge for Florida — and for the country — if it passes, particularly since our elections are so often squeakers. We currently have the most draconian restoration laws in the country.
patrick II
@patrick II:
What I love about it is that Trump will have difficulty “firing” him (withdrawing his nomination) because of pride and cowardice, and Kavanaugh is desperate to get on the Supreme Court where he hopes to be untouchable, so he is not giving up. They are embraced in a dance of death — or at least a dance of base ignominy.

@Martin:
Well,of course he’s not withdrawing. He was promised the Supreme Court, and he’ll hold his breath till his face turns blue if he doesn’t get it.
Martin
@WaterGirl: Yes. If the allegations carry, then he’s also going to be out in the DC circuit. This isn’t just for his seat on the supreme court, this basically decides his career. Either he gets this appointment or he’s done as a judge and possibly as a lawyer.
Barbara
@WaterGirl: Really, before Trump, the $200K sports related debts (gambling debts?) would alone have prevented him from being nominated. I have no idea what hold he has over so many senators but it must be really strong.

You’re heading to New York, right? Fewer deer and (non-human) lizards there. I love the City, but as a visitor. I can’t imagine having to deal with housing there, I’ve had many friends and relatives in New York and know what they go through. Are you going to be living in one of the Outer Boroughs (to be pronounced as if you are saying “Outer Space”)?
There are some great parks and surprisingly undisturbed areas within the City or a short distance from it.

I am looking for my first job out of grad school. Taking a Trauma Certificate, and getting ready to go to my night class. I wish I were stepping out and seeing deer and scampering lizards on a hill in california. That seems nice.

M4 – congratulations. I left my keys on the desk on Friday at quitting time and flew out of the country on Saturday morning. I thought I was being nice by actually leaving my (former) boss a typed list of instructions that he needed to complete work that week. Although I have to admit that was more out of loyalty to my clients than it was to my boss. I have never regretted it. Not once. Even with the immigration hassles my DH and I are now living our best life. After all the years of struggling we earned it.

I mentioned yesterday that I’m pulling up carpet and finding really damaged wood floors underneath, with the added bonus of crusted decades old padding stuck to the wood. It makes me physically ill to spend too much time looking at the wreck of the floor (it looks like the wood had leprosy – mottled black and gray with crusty bits). I am actually going to be glad to get back to work on it tonight so I won’t have to watch the news. I have reached my limit for politics related stress for a while.

Anybody with a teenage girl critter is aware of the Brandy Melville clothing brand. [“Squeeee–BRANDY!”] Italian in origin they have now infested the States like headlice at a sleepover, vacuuming parents’ wallets across our fine land.
At any rate, I accompanied Soccer Girrrl to the Brandy section of the downtown Portland Nordstrom for some restorative shopping after watching our beloved Portland Thorns get beat like a rented mule by the much-disliked yet very good North Carolina team. She pawed and evaluated pretty much every item before settling on a Henley-style shirt, liking it enough to spend her money. (Whew) Finally getting to my point, even if it’s a Brandy item the label says John Galt. What the everloving fig is that about? Can any other teen parent clue me in as to whether they’re ‘avin’ a laff, or are they actually in charge of the new Italian government?

@patrick II: Also, too, “if I have to go down, I’m taking you with me” is a very alcoholic point of view.
I’ve been reading Wikipedia on Kavanaugh. They note that things are happening fast, and stuff may be wrong, but this is probably true:
So his only appearance in front of the Supremes was about Vince Foster’s possible murder by Hillary and her henchmen. That’s a pretty thin record for a nominee, isn’t it? Somebody else thought so too:
Durbin and Leahy called him a liar in 2007.
He keeps being touted as a brilliant legal mind by the Republicans, but he’s really just a bog standard Republican apparatchik with big dreams.

Ok, since the link works, but the actual tweet didn’t show up, it says:

How about we step up and do the right thing for this guy, who’s running to replace Russian Stooge Nunez?
This is the link to Janz’s tweet, which includes a link to his ActBlue page.

@debit:
I can top that (in case it helps). Realtor in town was assisting in the sale of an old home and they decided to rip out the carpeting and refinish the original wood flooring, always a big help with the sale.
On peeling away the livingroom carpet the floor revealed what looked like the shadow of a human form. Wellsirree, as it turned out the previous owner had died in the joint and laid there quite a while before being discovered. The corpse had stained the wood but they just cleaned the carpet and carried on.
Full-disclosure rules thus dictated informing any potential buyer that “Uh, somebody died in here in case that’s something you care about.” You can’t sand away history.

Just reinforces what a chickenshit Trump is. It’s the adminstration’s decision whether to withdraw the nomination, not Kavanaugh’s.

@Redshift: Trump is a chickenshit, but the GOP is all-in at this point. This is the extinction burst. They’re going to lose the House. They may well lose the Senate. They want their guy on the supreme court. Trump is fucking eveything up. Demographics were already working against them, and now that’s just accelerating with women leaning so strongly toward Democrats over issues that will cause some of them to never return to the GOP.
Backing off doesn’t fix anything, it only causes them to not get their guy on the court. They’re fucked either way, so why not at least get the lifetime appointment out of it?

We were actively house-hunting during one of our serial housing BOOM cycles when it was as they say, a “sellers’ market.” So we grew accustomed to continuously wideding our search radius and considering ever more challenging “projects” (and kept running into the same squads of flippers, who would slap on some paint, linoleum and cheap appliances then turn them for 40% more.) Had to finally call a time-out after one really sad walkthrough where the old lady’s clothes still hung in the closet and the bedding was still intact. Had to restrain the urge to feel whether the mattress was warm. It felt creepy and invasive.

@debit: After the last flood (Hurricane Floyd) we ripped out all of our carpets and cleaned the concrete floors with bleach (our house was on a slab so there was no chance of wood floors beneath the carpet). Then the strangest thing started to happen. The floor started to grow. Little mushroom type things, fur type mold, flossy stuff. You could wipe the floor with bleach in the morning and by the afternoon it looked like the living room needed mowing. At one point I sat there and actually watched the stuff grow, it was like a 70s sci fi movie.

@Martin: That’s what they want as a whole, but to be a successful strategy, it assumes that individual members are willing to sacrifice for this “common good.” I don’t believe that for a second, which is why I was pondering the case of the other 4 women senators for the GOP. somebody get in Joni Ernst’s grill and ask her if she thinks these now 4 women are lying. @Betty Cracker: The most exciting numbers in that poll for me were the responses to this question:
So while Trump and the Republicans drone on about the wall and the deep state and MS-13 and kneeling for the anthem and liberals taking away your guns, most voters don’t really give a shit about that stuff, or at least they are not priorities. They most care about healthcare, education and the environment! But you’d never know that from media coverage of what is going on in the country.
I know it’s low hanging fruit to go after Trump and Republicans, and that may make sense if a specific election is really tight, but I really believe that Democrats should stay out of the gutter, and just explain how they have policies that are far better than those that have been implemented since Trump became president.

@Mandalay: All good news, and Gillum is running his campaign on those issues. DeSantis is just screeching “socialism” every two seconds. That word may retain more lingering ooga-booga power in Florida than it does in other places, but it’s not the magic wand it used to be.

I hate the smell of Bay Area rent and commutes in the morning.

@Gelfling 545:
Why not? Their lives are screwed either way, Might as well try for a little justice in return.
RandomMonster
@Major Major Major Major: Escaping that is my primary motivation as well.

So James Woods was kicked off Twitter. His response:
What is it with these right-wingers and not understanding the First Amendment?
Obligatory link to XKCD.

If you’re looking for hills near NYC, you basically go to the Catskills.
Take the Metro North Hudson Line up to the end, Poughkeepsie, and then take the elevator to the Walkway over the Hudson and head West – the rail trail will take you nearly all the way through to the Shawagunks. There’s a short span just before New Paltz which isn’t finished yet, but the “River to Ridge” trail on the other side of New Paltz just opened, so it’s become incredibly easy to get from the train station to the mountain top without a car, and getting easier.

Congratulations M4! I’m a month ahead of you and it’s great. I think the deer were a message from universe that everything is going to be well.

Sorry if this has been mentioned, but Susan Collins was interviewed by Alex Witt for the Circus. She mentioned that she is close to a decision about Kavanaugh, and Kavanaugh will not overturn Roe.
WaterGirl
@JPL: Close to a decision, and they haven’t even held the hearing yet. :: rage ::

@ruemara: BC productions are mostly union shops so if you have job skills you should be fine. Also if you’re AA, any production around Vancouver is always looking for diversity in their background players. Gets you paid and on the set anyway. My sum total on national TV was background on Black Fox, shot in Calgary.

@?BillinGlendaleCA: Washing your car yourself usually means your soap and water and road filth goes down a storm drain straight to nature. Car washes should recycle their water, especially if the local government is on the ball.

@Betty Cracker:
There have been studies that shown that “socialism” now has positive connotations to younger voters precisely because right wingers overuse the word. It now means “not extreme capitalism” and so the younger voters think it must be great.

He also promises to pull out before he cums inside her. And he definitely does not have an untreatable case of clap.

Major^4,
What will be your general role in the new NYC position? In general terms of giant IT skill-set variety? I ask not to be nosy, but interested in openings for skills and that.
Not that I’m ever again going to be in the job market as long as government pensions support me in the manner to which I am accustomed… but ya never know!

First, congratulations, Major Major Major Major. :)
Second, today is my birthday; I’m making sliwowice tonight; and I’m writing my nephew’s GoFundMe page. He was recently diagnosed with osteosarcoma, and started chemotherapy on Saturday. He’s 23.
So, yeah, it’s a mix.

@JPL:
at least, not by himself. that might be good enough for Collins.

I almost put my head through my monitor at work when I heard about Rosenstein.

I’m in no mood to sugar coat this. Coons is a stupid asshole for trusting the word of even a single congressional republican. If indeed he does, which I doubt. He is more likely a treacherous asshole who’s simply protecting the motherfuckers backs.
