Meet-Up Proposal in Seattle (with Bonus GOTV Action!)

FacebookTweetEmail

Message from commentor (& experienced meet-up planner!) Casey L:

H.E. Wolf and I would like to propose a Seattle meetup, but more of a working meetup than a social one. We want to get together with a smallish group of Seattle area jackals and do postcards for the “Postcards to Voters” political action group.

I’m pretty sure you’re familiar with them (I first heard about them on BJ) but in case not: People sign up online with the group, who then send them lists of voters in targeted cities, along with the wording to be used on the postcards. The postcards can be downloaded from the P-2-V site, or people can buy and use their own, within stated guidelines.

H E Wolf and I want to host a meetup during which we would explain the process, distribute and complete a small batch of cards, and also send people home with “starter kits” (5 postcards and postage) for them to complete and mail on their own. (We will pay for the cards and postage.)

The proposed dates are over President’s Day weekend: Sunday the 16th or Monday the 17th, at 12:30. The proposed location is Elliot Bay Brewery on Lake City Way in North Seattle (parking is free, a major consideration).

If you’re interested, leave a comment below, or send me a message via the ‘Contact Us’ link & I’ll forward it.

I’m interested, even though I’ve been here for a while, I never can quite make the meet-ups. And I love the postcard idea, great way to get us jump-started. Thank you!

I can do any day as long as it is not rush hour or a game.  We’re in south Beacon Hill.

That may change if my partner has to go to Bellingham to close down his mom’s house but that will probably finish by the end of January.

You’d get more people if you had said “We are going to fill out postcards while drinking in a restaurant/bar.”  Don’tcha think?

This is an event at which drinkers and non-drinkers alike are most welcome!

I’ll be there, making my (always-plentiful) typos on ginger ale. :)

@H.E.Wolf: This meetup and the proposed Quinerly meetups are the maiden voyage for the meetups feature.

Once you guys have all the details, we can add them to the meetup.

Never more will Yutsano be stuck at the LoDo location of whatever restaurant instead of the other location, with no way to figure out what went wrong!

@H.E.Wolf: If you’d rather use a different picture, you can send it to me.

Plus, we can post all the photos from the meetup.  When John saw the meetup feature, he said “so we could have photos from all the Balloon Juice meetups we’ve ever had?”

Yep.  We can do that for any past meetup where someone supplies the info and sends photos.  Or at least points us toward the right date so we can get the photos from the ones that were posted at the time.

    @WaterGirl: @H.E.Wolf: … I have edited my comment. :-)

Not to worry. I knew you were being humorous, and I regret that it sounded as if I were rebuking you. My apologies!

Granted, I’m only speaking for myself re: drinking and writing. I can’t write a simple sentence on a postcard (or in a blog comment) without misspelling something, when at my sober-est.

Also, CaseyL created a superb event write-up, mentioning that it’s a more task-oriented party this time.

That said, I’m certain there will be cakes and ale! Conviviality is the watchword at this meet-up. Well, that and Regime Change. :)

And now, since I’ve done way more than my share of chatting tonight, I’m going to hush up for the rest of the evening.

I’m thrilled to be collaborating with CaseyL, and I look forward to the meet-up next month!

@H.E.Wolf: I just added the original announcement to the meetup event, as well

P.S. I am so out of practice writing things by hand that my hand would cramp up when I tried to hand-write letters during a previous election cycle.  But maybe postcards would be better than letters!

I like the Meetup section. What a terrific collection of events and photos. Thanks, WaterGirl!

And thanks also to everyone for their responses – looks like we’ll have a great turnout!  Rest assured that Elliott Bay Brewery has excellent food and drink.

Chopper has said that Sunday works best for him, so shall we set it for Sunday the 16th?

    CaseyL

    January 21, 2020 at 8:07 pm

@WaterGirl: Not only easier on the sender, but easier on the recipient as well: they only have to read a postcard.

It would be good to know, if there’s any way to know, how effective sending post cards is versus phone banking.  Post cards, it doesn’t matter if the person is home; phone banking, you get a response (if they answer the phone at all, that is).

Postcards can be tossed as junk without reading, but maybe that depends on the image on the card – is it intriguing, or pretty, or inoffensive enough to get the recipient to read what’s on the other side?

I think that’s why it’s better to use store-bought postcards rather than cards downloaded from the P2V site; particularly vintage cards with interesting images on them.  They don’t look like a mass/junk mailing.

@CaseyL: So have you decided on the meetup date?  It almost looks like you have, but I don’t want to change the date on the meetup event without confirmation.

I don’t even begin to know what’s most helpful.  Personally, I would rather get a hand-written postcard than a letter or a (fucking) phone call.
