Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

My right to basic bodily autonomy is not on the table. that’s the new deal.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

Today’s gop: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

Fight for a just cause, love your fellow man, live a good life.

Let there be snark.

The words do not have to be perfect.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

Be a wild strawberry.

The lights are all blinking red.

So fucking stupid, and still doing a tremendous amount of damage.

We are learning that “working class” means “white” for way too many people.

Polls are now a reliable indicator of what corporate Republicans want us to think.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

Disappointing to see gov. newsom with his finger to the wind.

There are times when telling just part of the truth is effectively a lie.

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

How any woman could possibly vote for this smug smarmy piece of misogynistic crap is beyond understanding.

Republicans: slavery is when you own me. freedom is when I own you.

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

I’m more christian than these people and i’m an atheist.

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

More Shameless Self Promotion

The Instapundit links to this particular Day By Daycartoon by Chris Muir (which, I must agree, is genius), and states:

CHRIS MUIR’S Day By Day really deserves to be syndicated.

I could not agree more, and if you click here, you will be taken to a list of syndicates you can write to telling them how good Day by Day is, and how it deserves to be in newspapers everywhere.

How, you might ask, is this shameless self-promotion? Because I believe that if I was not the first, I was pretty damn close to the first blog in the blogosphere to promote Day By Day. He emailed me, I immediately recognized his genius, and it has been a daily read ever since.

While I am promoting things, let me remind everyonethat the best blog in the world is now back after a lengthy hiatus. If you have not been there before, go read Protein Wisdom. If you really want a belly laugh, click here to read the greatest fisking ever done– and I think it was done before ‘fisking’ was even a term. To this day, I still think “Let’s Rall!” is the greatest post ever written in the blogosphere, and when Protein Wisdom disappeared, I was so upset that one night, after a few cocktails and 3-4 months without Jeff and company, I actually used Yahoo’s people search and called every Jeff Goldstein in Colorado. I never found, the right one, btw..

Balloon-Juice WAS the very first to show the toon(and mention it). Shortly after, DailyPundit started carrying it.

    Thanks, John!

Heh. I’m listed under my wife’s name nowadays. Got tired of Ted Rall calling and hanging up.

    The sniveling prick.

I will personally throw my estimable weight behind this effort if I can be assured that it will replace Mallard Fillmore in my paper of record.

Wow, that is a good find, and buffoon-juice was there first.

Alternate converstation bubbles for the hilarious Kerry-Gulf War-Vietnam cartoon:

    Panel 1
“I actually was aware of the Al-Qaeda threat before they struck, it was a top priority from day 1 of my administration”

    Panel 2
“I see that President Bush is telling the librul media that he had the Al-Qaeda threat covered”
“Yeah, except when it came to stopping it!”

    Panel 3
“Stop it? You mean we expect this President to actually do anything?”
    “Ha ha, that’s funny!”

Look at me, I’m a cartoonist!

incisive, short, to-the-point…well done, burnplant! You must be tired after 6 hours of cogitation to write that in; kick back & have a beer!

    Burnplant,

If Ted Rall can ever learn to draw, you might provide good, trenchant story lines for him.

    Cordially…

Chris Muir and John Cole are just soooo proud of being simpletons. Emulating dear leader no doubt. Can’t understand bills have amendments?

“Kerry’s staff said he was trying to indicate his support for an amendment funding the appropriation from increased taxes on the wealthiest Americans. When that amendment failed, he voted against the bill.”

Was that so terribly difficult for your pretty heads?

    “pretty heads,” eh?

Guess we know what you’ll be spending your weekend puffin’ on.

Oh, and let me get this straight: Kerry’s FOR the troops unless he doesn’t get his way on a tax increase. In which case, fuck ’em. That about right?

    Tool.

    Jeff G,
Ha ha, that’s right you scored on ‘im. Wow, that’s devastating. Way to bring out the “Kerry tax increase or soldiers die” platform…finally a genius at buffoon-juice!!!

    Sorry Rick,
I’d just skimmed at first and didn’t notice your excellent application of the word “trenchant”. Way to go, time to chalk up another win for yourself and flip that calender…next word, “oblivious”…use it in a sentence.

Oh, come now, burnplant. You’re gonna have to do better than that. I mean, “Wow, that’s devastating”…? And,”Way to bring out the blah blah blah”…? ‘slike being teased by a 15-year old girl who’s just discovered how emphasizing certain words can generate rudimentary sarcasm.

Please tell me you have more in the bag than that. Because I’m already bored, and I haven’t even started slapping you around yet.

There’s a reason that Day by Day isn’t syndicated anywhere… a very simple one.

    It’s not ever funny.

    March 29, 2004 at 6:32 am

correct correct….not very funny…….and it needs to be a little more complicated in a way while maintaining simplicity with a more creative character development which is lacking as I’ve seen……..

    I said earlier……

Yeah, I’ve had it recommended to me a couple of times. It’s a right-wing Doonesbury variant, but it just isn’t at all funny to me. It feels a lot like Mallard Fillmore; you’re supposed to laugh because “liberals” are so stupid, not because of clever comedic timing or good characterization.

    Slartibartfast

    March 29, 2004 at 1:37 pm

Not laugh-out-loud funny, but amusing. To me, at least. Doonesbury hasn’t even risen to the level of interesting in over a decade, by comparison.

Actually- I think the cartoon I linked to was laugh outloud funny.

Full discluosure- I have all the old Doonesbury books- and they are damned funny. Miserable since at least the 80’s though.

More full disclosure- The greatest cartoon strip in the world is still Bloom County.

John, you know the only reason why I rag on anything of yours is cuz I love you

    March 29, 2004 at 4:41 pm

John. I wrote a novella for my master’s thesis called Brautigan, Revisited — about Brautigan’s ghost dating this college chick, despite all the inconveniences of the whole alive / dead thing.

I’ve also taught both Trout Fishing In America and In Watermelon Sugar, along with some of RB’s poetry.

Tell you what: I’ll post a couple of Brautigan links from my archives over on my site. Just for your having heard of him.

    March 29, 2004 at 5:05 pm

Brautigan is a genius- I think I have read every book he has ever written.

Willard and His Bowling Trophies might be one of my favorites.

I forget, though- was it the Hawkline Monster that had the Obsessive Comulsive counter who even counted the number of times he vomited in the boat?

Been so many years. I need to read them all again.
