Someone we know as MomSense… raised two sons… who are in a band… that released an album today!
The first song on the album:
I loved this song, and I can’t wait to hear the rest. The video is stunning, here’s a screen capture of one of my favorite scenes.

Congratulations to Silver Heels, MomSense sons, and MomSense herself. You must be kvelling.
mrmoshpotato
Excellent! And saxamaphone too!
MomSense
Thank you, WG! My cup runneth over today.

That’s really very nice, I like it a lot. Passed it on to 2 friends ❤️
NotMax
Nuthin’ to do with music, I just like the quote and was reminded of it by the post’s title.
MomSense
The Ballad of Bo Curtis is a song about a lobsterman whose boat sank in January (30 plus years ago) leaving him stranded on a buoy. When they wrote the song they assumed he had died, but they met a woman from one of the islands who knew him and out them in touch. They spent some time with him and got his blessing on the song. He is quite a character!

@MomSense:
I passed it on to a friend who’s going up there tomorrow. Very lovely.

Okay, shall drag this here from sunrise thread. Place can always benefit from an infusion of class.
;)
WaterGirl
@MomSense: I was just listening to that one when I got a work call and had to refresh the page to get the music to stop while i was on the phone. :-( I will definitely go back to that one!
I am not as crazy about the jazzy stuff, but I really liked all the others. it’s a great eclectic mix of styles.
WaterGirl
@MomSense: Did they really write all the songs? No covers?
MagdaInBlack
Music: I have a “Blues for the Weekend “playlist, and right now its Buster Benton ” Blues and Trouble” ?
WaterGirl
@MomSense: I’m so glad you shared the links with us earlier!
debbie
@MomSense:
Love the song WG has highlighted. Is your son one of the guys on the boat?
Jackie
@MomSense: Beautiful song; stunning video! Maine is a beautiful state!
Be proud, MomSense!!!
NotMax
Warning, rabbit hole ahead.
Not everyone’s cuppa, but if you have any curiosity about or interest in music of the era, Radio Dismuke.
MomSense
@WaterGirl:
No covers! And now that they are all vaxxed and able to be together in their studio every week they have five more songs they perform and quite a few in the pipeline.
zhena gogolia
@NotMax:
Very cute!
MomSense
@debbie:
No, that’s Owen who wrote the song. He lobsters.
randal m sexton
Lovely music! Looks a little like my beloved San Juan Islands, but a bit colder.
MomSense
@WaterGirl:
I like Patron Saint and Manatee features my then 16 year old on guitar.
Also, my son brought the guitar gifted by Bella Q, Alternative Fax in to the studio so it’s on all the tracks. She was a big fan of Townes Van Zandt as are the members of the band and they wanted him to be a part of making new music with them.
WaterGirl
@MomSense: Impressive! Does the same person write all of the songs? Do they collaborate on writing? This music makes me want to move. As in dance. But I would also love to be in Maine, so there’s that, too!
WaterGirl
@MomSense: Nice! I assume someone is gifting Bella Q with the album? Unless it’s really all free? Is that how the kids do it these days when starting out? Or do they get a cut from Spotify?
edit: You must be bursting with pride!
debbie
@MomSense:
Wow, didn’t know about the guitar!
I was watching the video and thinking this country would be so much better if it was uninhabited. ??♀️

@WaterGirl:
This batch was written by Owen but they all brought parts to the songs. It was tough during COVID because they had to work remotely. The new things they are doing are all written together. My favorite of the new songs (more soul) was written during a jam session in my dad’s barn in May. I just kept bringing food and drinks out and they kept playing. The neighbors were all outside on their porches dancing and having a ball.
Rob
I liked the song on the video. The video is gorgeous.
(I don’t have a Spotify account so I can only listen to snippets of the other song).
MomSense
@WaterGirl:
They don’t have CDs yet but I’ll send it to her when they do.
NotMax
@zhena gogolia
Not the slightest idea whence the instigation; have had this Russian piece intermittently running through the interior of the cranium for the entire week.
MomSense
@Rob:
Not sure if this will work but it’s a link to their website through Instagram and I think there are more streaming options.https://www.silverheelstheband.com/
Emma from Miami
Maxi talent! I am impressed. Now I’m going to go and listen to all the songs.
zhena gogolia
@NotMax:
Better than Rick Astley.

Good song and band! I’m in the midst of migrating my operating system, and this was well worth the wrestling needed to get my old bookmarks for music in the right place to add this one to the list. Must check out Bo Curtis later.

Townes Van Zandt – If I Needed You
WaterGirl
@MomSense: I recall you talking about that day with them playing in the barn and all the neighbors dancing. Simple pleasures are the best.
WaterGirl
@MomSense: That is snippets, too.
Dan B
@WaterGirl: I thought you’d like the video as in beautiful water and islands.
I had some clients who bought a place in the San Juan Islands, Blakeley. It’s a large private island with access by plane or boat. It was “interesting” getting a crew, materials and heavy equipment up there and we had to work in December which was actually beautiful weather due to the Olympic rain shadow. The wife grew up in DC and summered in Maine. She married a man from Las Vegas so the San Juan’s were the west coast equivalent of Maine.
Like Maine the area was heavily glaciated with 5,000 feet of ice.
WaterGirl
@Dan B: You definitely have me pegged.
At least WaterGirl isn’t false advertising. :-)
edit: You had so many high-end clients. Amazing.
HumboldtBlue
There has got to be one proud momma running around these here parts today. Congrats to the band and how awesome for you, Momsense.
Here’s a quick chuckle if it is a bit O/T (still worth 15 seconds)
MomSense
@WaterGirl:
They had quite a few barn playing days during COVID when I wasn’t there. Fortunately the neighbors are very cool! I won’t tell my dad but they were a little sad about my son leaving because they were enjoying all the music on the weekends.
The barn was ideal during COVID because they could open the large doors on the front and back so it was well ventilated.
WaterGirl
@MomSense: The farm was really a blessing during that time. I bet your dad is thrilled to be home.
edit: Pretty sure the farm is a blessing all the time!
MomSense
@WaterGirl:
So thrilled. First time I saw him he was so teary. He was stuck in Florida during the pandemic and missed all of us and didn’t know if he’d ever get home again.

There are a couple of B-list classics coming up on TCM tonight:

Let Rick Beato introduce (or refresh your memory) about the greatest solo of all time.
Seriously, this is an awesome solo – and not guitar.
Spanky
@mrmoshpotato: I just saw that yesterday! Yeah, OP was the pinnacle.
HinTN
@MomSense: I would buy the cd in a New York second. Please, please, please
ETA – WaterGirl knows where to find me.
Rob
@MomSense: Thanks! I’ll give it a spin tomorrow
HinTN
@MomSense: Playing Soundcloud via the browser now. Still want a cd. ?
Rob
@Rob: Even if it is just snippets, as WaterGirl said up above

I grew up in Maine and haven’t made it back for a while. We have two young girls so traveling anywhere is huge ordeal. Seeing the video is definitely making me want to get back soon, though.
Dan B
@WaterGirl: I had many middle class clients early in my career but there were fewer every year. The rich got richer but the middle dropped.
I hope you get to visit Jackals who live near water.

Just logged off work on the west coast and I’m starting my happy hour with this. So good. Where can I buy the CD? Do they still make CDs? I’ll figure it out.

Momsense, pretty good song. I agree with WG, great video with some nice timelapse at the beginning and great drone footage.

Sounds like I am not the only one who wants to buy this music!

Upcoming travel plans:
(1) Internment of neighbor’s ashes in Arlington National Cemetery in early September.
(2) Trip to see brother’s family in Boston with a side trip to Maine for a couple of days in late September.
Dan B
@Yutsano: Been thinking about that, will have to watch Delta variant. So far so good.
Could even do our house and garden. After we get it weeded…

Curious how any of your local COVID PSAs stack up against this local one which runs a lot on the TV here. Hope they have production values a bit more up to date than what looks like approximately 1959 (not to mention people who can, y’know, act).
;)

@bemused senior:
That’s wonderful, thanks.

Watched an extraordinary evening of bluegrass tonight, live-streamed from the Rockygrass festival outside Denver. “A Tribute to Tony Rice” featured Bryan Sutton and Chris Eldridge on guitars and vocals, David Grisman and Sam Bush on mandolins, Bela Fleck on banjo, Jerry Douglas on dobro, Michael Cleveland on fiddle, and Mark Schatz on bass. And they burned the place down.
Yutsano
I actually watched the Parade of Nations for the Olympics. I was more emotional than I expected to be, and not just for Team USA. Even the tiny national delegations like Lesotho were still so happy to be there. I do wish I could have found another feed to watch over NBC however. The team rah-rah stuff got old fast.

Spent an hour or so tonight working on “Here’s To Us” by Halestorm and while I was looking around Youtube for lessons I found out they’ll be at the York Fair just up the road next weekend. Woohoo!
(Heavy rock band, female vocals*, grew up about 15 miles from here.)
* one of my favorite genres, ever since I heard Evanescence almost 20 years ago. Or maybe Heart, Joan Jett, etc etc.

Ugh. I am VERY angry about the front story at The Atlantic right now.

@Martin: Took a peek, I can see why.

I haven’t watched a minute of the Olympics and most likely won’t, but that doesn’t mean Olympic Fanfare isn’t an awe4some piece of music.

Well, great. Now I’m so homesick for Maine I can hardly stand it. Nice song, tho!
