Kathy Hochul will be the Governor of New York in 14 days.

@dr. bloor: David Paterson had a ton of baggage that Hochul probably doesn’t have, including accusations of witness tampering in a domestic abuse case. That said, Hochul’s husband Bill is lead counsel at Delaware North, which is owned by the Jacobs family. Chris Jacobs won Chris Collins’ seat and ran a Trumpy campaign. That’s the only semi-bad thing I know about him.

I had to listen to my father-in-laws wife excuse Cuomo’s behavior, whatever he was doing was more important than his lecherous behaviour and his victims. My daughter had to leave the table before she unloaded her view. The kids are alright and have a better sense of this than the olds. If we want to be a party of standards (a good thing compared to our competition!), then Democrats can and should hold our officials to those standards. Good riddance.
Roger Moore
@Betty Cracker:
The retaliation was the really damning part to me. If Cuomo were personally handsy, that would be gross and a reason to get rid of him, but it wouldn’t represent a fundamental danger from his governorship. But the retaliation shows that not only he but his entire administration had no regard for the law, which is utterly disqualifying. It also reinforced the message we got about the nursing home business, where he threatened retaliation for revealing numbers that made him look bad. It shows that covering up and attacking the messenger were fundamental parts of his governing style.
Josie
@zhena gogolia:
I was thinking along the same lines. Not that I feel sorry for Cuomo, but what did he do that TFG didn’t do and worse? PsiFighter37

I hope Kathy Hochul enjoys being governor for a short period of time, because I see no way she wins a full term.
West of the Cascades
Despite the resources it will take, I hope the NYS legislature proceeds with the impeachment investigation – both to have a Senate vote to disqualify Cuomo from ever seeking office again, but also potentially to pass some legislation that will deter other (and future) state officials from this sort of behavior. The resignation can’t be cause to just sweep this all back under the table.

I know we tend to lionize Mario’s memory, but what I remember is that SNL skit from late 1991 when it looked like Bush was going to cruise to reelection, imagining the Democratic primary, and the actor playing Mario loudly declaiming, “I HAVE MOB TIES.” (I should watch that skit again if I can find it)

@PsiFighter37:
I’m fine with Gov. Tish James.
Here’s a little story relevant to Kathy Hochul. The previous Lt. Gov. was Bob Duffy, former Mayor of Rochester (and before that, Chief of Police). Bob got tired of being completely ignored and sent around on PR visits by Cuomo, so he quit. Hochul replaced him. She apparently was OK with being ignored (I read a story saying she and Cuomo hadn’t spoken for weeks), and now she’s Governor via deus ex machina.
Basically, Cuomo put someone from Western New York on the ticket to get votes from that part of the state. Hochul is from Buffalo. That’s her main role, other than ceremonial stuff. To Cuomo’s credit, both Duffy and Hochul are quite competent, not that he utilized either of them in any meaningful capacity.

Super unimpressed with Cuomo’s attorney. She seems a bit tone deaf, to say the least. That was a very pre-“me too” presentation. @dr. bloor: Some people allegedly on our side have no understanding of strategy. Pelosi knows what she’s doing, as do Biden and Shumer. It takes time to get the proverbial ducks in the right rows. And then it happens.
Also too, remember all the scoffing at Biden’s invocation of bipartisanship? Guess who got 19 Republican Senators to vote for infrastructure. I wonder if people mistake Biden for foolish or naive because he’s not a soaring orator. Behind that sometimes bumbling exterior is a super-smart, shrewd politician who knows how to get things done. People underestimate him at their peril.

Cuomo’s resignation is fine, if and only if, the legislature continues with impeachment. Forcing people to resign is the easy way out, but it never results in true accountability and it gives people the ability to claim they never had a fair hearing.
Impeach, try, convict (if the evidence supports conviction), convict, and in Cuomo’s case bar him from ever holding public office in NY again. If they can take away his pension, so much the better.
I firmly believe this country would be better off if the House had impeached Nixon — resignation notwithstanding — and the Senate had convicted him. They then should have stripped him of any post-presidential benefits they could withhold. The pardon made things even worse. Today, our presidents are effectively above the law.
In Cuomo’s case, all of the evidence should have been aired in trial for the world to see and hear.

best wishes to soon-to-be-Governor Hochul… I have no idea on how effective she will be but it’s good to see Cuomo walk (out of office, if not court), we’ll see if the NY House still wants to impeach him for his crimes or not. In a way, I wish they would, it helps cement the seriousness of the transgression and indicates that its not just for show. I don’t recall that skit, but after 1988, everyone thought Mario was going to run for POTUS. Then, the Gulf War happened, Poppy’s approval rating briefly hit 97% or something like that, and every Dem front-runner decided to take a pass. Which is how we got the long-winded and adulterous Governor of Arkansas whose closest rival was Paul Tsongas. To this day, I’m convinced that the only reason we’re stuck with Clarence Thomas is that Thurgood Marshall looked around in 1991, decided that there was no way for Poppy to lose, and chose to spend his last years at home. I like to think that if he’d truly believed a Dem was going to win, he’d have stuck it out until after the election and history would have changed.

I wish Hochul well and unless increased media scrutiny finds major problems, she will beat any Republican.
I will say again: it is Kirsten Gillibrand’s job if she wants it. A woman who wanted to be President in 2020 probably still has the bug. Combine a term or two as governor with 12 years in the Senate and she has a shot at the big job.
Being a moderate Congresswoman for 4 years in a purple district in Pataki’s baliwick, a NY Metro stop away from the Big Apple, she avoids the NYC “handicap” among upstaters but appeals to suburbanites. And all the folks worrying about a return to business as usual in Albany post Handy Andy in regards to sex harrassment should appreciate a woman who made sexism in the military her signature issue from Day 1 and took the heat from many Dems for tipping Franken into resigning.
Did I mention she can flop as a candidate for governor in 2022 without giving up her Senate Seat? Her next election there is 2024.
Oh, and as governor she could name her replacement in 2022 (that’s how she got the Senate job herself). That gives Letitia James a shot at the Big Leagues without any implication that she is profiting from Cuomo’s demise.

@Le Comte de Monte Cristo, fka Edmund Dantes: For a long stretch the Democratic Party in the Senate was sustained by the likes of Daschle, Baucus, Melcher, Dorgan, Conrad, McGovern, Boren, Exon, and Harkin while today’s liberal bastions gave us Pete Wilson, Rudy Boschwitz, Mark Hatfield, Daniel Evans, Dave Durenburger, Arlen Spector and Al Damato.

@eddie blake:
So, what you’re saying is, a lot of people said he was guilty, so he was guilty.
How is that not mob justice again?
Asking for a friend.
eddie blake
@Cacti:
ah. you must be the smartest one on the short bus.
did HE say he WASN’T guilty?
you know, in his RESIGNATION speech?
nope. he said “i remember these incidents differently.”
did he stand up and DEMAND due process? fuck no. he (like brave sir robin) fled. he ran the fuck away with his tail between his legs.
or are you saying his ACCUSERS were the mob? thought you had gillibrand and schumer pegged for that gig.
CLEAR consciousness of guilt.
fucking pathetic. try harder.
Cacti
@eddie blake:
Yes, I’m saying that the multiple anonymous accusers were part of the mob. The right to confront them being part of that whole due process thing. His cowardly colleagues who demanded he sacrifice himself at the altar of #MeToo, shoved him out the door and told him no dice on an ethics committee hearing were also part of it.
Then there’s the fact that an accused person in this country doesn’t have to profess their innocence. Burden is with the accuser. More of that due process.
So, while your pique and scorn are top notch, your efforts to show that it wasn’t mob justice kind of keep confirming that it was.
Your grade: F
Please take a remedial civics course.
P.S. I’m glad that Gillibrand’s theatrics cost her any shot at winning the Dem primary. Sometimes there is ACTUAL justice.
eddie blake
@Cacti: four of eight were not anonymous. women coming forward to report sexual assault are not a “mob.” misogyny much?
google is your friend, short bus.
take your “f”. you know where you can stick it
eta- i like how you don’t get that by resigning, he killed his chance for an ethics hearing. like, HE made that decision.
Cacti
@eddie blake: Speaking of google, if you’d used it you would have seen that he actually denied all of the accusations against him.
But the mob had spoken.
The great political triumph of the hashtag activists remains the resignation of Al Franken. Bravo! (slow clap) Meanwhile, the bad guys sat back, laughed, and put Boof Kavanaugh on SCOTUS for life.
It’s always so easy for them to weaponize the supposed good intentions of kneejerk lefties against each other.
Like you, remedial civics pupil. But thanks for keeping America safe from Al Franken. ;-) XOXO
eddie blake
@Cacti:
uhh, no, short bus. he denied ONE of the incidents, presumably the tweeden accusation, and then SPECIFICALLY stated that the other incidents didn’t conform to his memories…
you know, juuuust like cuomo did.
guess it’s hard to do reading comprehension on the short bus?
again, i dunno where you were taught how linear time works or, you know, why you expect to get due process from a job you QUIT.
like, that’s not how due process WORKS, short bus. you don’t get it from an institution you’ve RESIGNED from.
civics lesson? try THINKING lesson.
…and it’s amazing, AMAZING that you’re casting doubt on the myriad women who came forward to accuse franken at the tail end of the fucking cuomo thread….and clearly you’ve forgotten doug jones. but that’s cool.
“the mob.”
yeah, go have fun with your misogyny, short bus.
Cacti
@eddie blake:
So in your world, the payoff for mobbing Al Franken out of the Senate was Doug Jones?
How is Senator Jones doing these days?
Oh, right. He served a half term and lost to Tommuh Tuberville.
It really is a mystery why the knee jerk lefty brain trust always fucking loses.
eddie blake
@Cacti: no, short bus. geez, you really aren’t a thinker are you.
i mean, you keep going back to this “mob” mentality. the dude resigned. he coulda stuck it out for the ethics investigation, but declined after the congressional aides he harassed came forward.
four women on the record. four who didn’t want their lives turned upside down came forward. not a fucking mob, short bus.
franken resigned. you don’t get due process THROUGH your job after you QUIT your job. that’s not a difficult concept for most, but for you?
you act like he was kicked the fuck out. he RESIGNED.
yeah. doug jones. facing roy moore. roy “banned from the mall” roy.
people who accost, molest, grope, harass or rape women should NOT be in power. that shouldn’t be a difficult concept, but for you?
we’re supposed to be DIFFERENT than the fascist gop. we’re supposed to have PRINCIPLES. franken did the RIGHT thing by resigning.
cognitive infants like yourself have difficulty with that too, i guess.
and i like how franken resigning- oh, on planet short bus, being run out of town by the “mob” doing its mobbing-gets us kavanaugh. yeah. oooookay. so.brett kavanaugh is gillibrand’s fault, too. uh huh.
…and it’s funny, you don’t know my voting record, you don’t really know my politics at all, but by all means, lash out at the “knee-jerk lefty brain trust” when really it comes down to not being a dick to women and keeping your fucking hands to yourself.
another concept you clearly have difficulty with, short bus.
