Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

There are consequences to being an arrogant, sullen prick.

People identifying as christian while ignoring christ and his teachings is a strange thing indeed.

They spent the last eight months firing professionals and replacing them with ideologues.

I did not have this on my fuck 2025 bingo card.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

American history and black history cannot be separated.

The way to stop violence is to stop manufacturing the hatred that fuels it.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

Republicans in disarray!

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. keep building.

Rupert, come get your orange boy, you petrified old dinosaur turd.

Trump should be leading, not lying.

People are complicated. Love is not.

’Where will you hide, Roberts, the laws all being flat?’

It’s a good piece. click on over. but then come back!!

I have other things to bitch about but those will have to wait.

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

Our messy unity will be our strength.

“Just close your eyes and kiss the girl and go where the tilt-a-whirl takes you.” ~OzarkHillbilly

DeSantis transforming Florida into 1930s Germany with gators and theme parks.

We will not go back.

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

There are more Russians standing up to Putin than Republicans.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

ABC is reporting that Evan Bayh is not seeking re-election.

I’m not sure if this is good or bad.

Watching Democracy Now, with an engrossing story about Canadian protests against the Winter Olympics. They gave a figure of at least 1 billion just for police & security, which boggles, and a total cost to Vancouver of 6 billion.

One really has to question what communities and countries are actually getting by vying for the ‘opportunity’ to host the Olympics. Seems backward to me-the Olympics should be the ones beggng to pay.

Of course, I’m the radical who thinks that if the NBA, MLB, NFL, NHL, etc want a K-16 feeder/farm system, they damn well ought to pay school districts and colleges for the privilege.

ETA: Roger Ebert has an interesting perspective of the impact on London in a post on his blog (havng link fail in edit function-sorry).

@Phyllis: They ought to pay for their own stadiums as well, and chip in for the needed infrastructure to support them. The so-called economic benefit a team brings to a city never matches up to what they take out of it.

    Happy Lundi Gras everyone!

@Napoleon: I suspect the two women who have purchased the “Classic” OBEY thong have a slightly better chance, but I could be wrong.

No boxers have sold. Now see…that would turn me on, to see a guy in a pair of OBEY boxers. But I’m a freak.

Without the Winter Olympics, how would we ever find stars for the inevitable “Snoopy on Ice” figure skating shows? That’s gotta be worth billions.

Apart from this, the morans protesting the Olympics surely could be doing something better with their time.

Wow, way to totally reduce the issues at hand such as gentrification, marginalization of indigenous peoples, and how massive public resources are being used to their barest essence. And I don’t mean that as a complement. ‘Protesting the Olympics’…not so much.

    Since it’s an open thread….

I got an electronic survey to fill out the other day (e-rewards anyone? it’s good for free magazines). Anyway, this was the first political one I’ve gotten. There were some beauties that it wanted me to rate on a scale of 1-10 and gather other info from me

    —

The best way to stimulate our economy right now is through an economic agenda focused on returning money to taxpayers through tax cuts

The actions of the Obama administration and the Democrats in Congress have made me feel like I’m losing my country

In this financial crisis, if you played by the rules, paid your
mortgage, paid your taxes and acted responsibly, you got stabbed in the back by people who didn’t

Democrats and liberals are the ones to blames for the financial crisis

President Obama’s plans to share the wealth, move the country to a green economy, and provide healthcare [NB – not my fault there isn’t a complete sentence there]

    Abortion is morally wrong

Just over a year ago there was a presidential election between Barack Obama and Joe Biden on the Democratic ticket and John McCain and Sara Palin on the Republican ticket. For whom did you vote?

    —

There are other typos in there as well, and even placeholders that never got filled out. I’m sure my answers will make their heads explode, and they paid me $15 do it.

Also, I can’t believe they spelled Sarah’s name wrong. It was like that in multiple places.

Any ideas who might have funded such a survey?

    -Eric

    And FYWP

@Phyllis: That’s why Leonard Cohen wasn’t there! Damn. I knew there had to be a reason. I agree with you about pro-sports, too. It’s why I have such a conflict watching them. And yeah, they need to pay for their own damn stadiums.

@jeffreyw: Thank you, Sir, for continuing to post pictures of your various fauna.

    @Laura W: Two? Who’s the other one?

I do the best I can.

And I don’t mean that as a complement.

I doubt that you meant that as a “compliment” either.

The issues the protesters raise would exist whether or not the Olympics are being held. And since no one is going to cancel the games, and fewer are going to even pay attention to the protesters, their attempts at consciousness raising at this point in time is weak tea. The sad fact is that more Canadians are concerned that their country win their first gold medal than with infrastructure.

As for whether spending money on stadiums instead of people is a misuse of resources, I suggest that you ask the opinion of the good people of New Orleans.
