Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

Fight them, without becoming them!

Every reporter and pundit should have to declare if they ever vacationed with a billionaire.

When you’re a Republican, they let you do it.

He seems like a smart guy, but JFC, what a dick!

“When somebody takes the time to draw up a playbook, they’re gonna use it.”

Today in our ongoing national embarrassment…

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

DeSantis transforming Florida into 1930s Germany with gators and theme parks.

They are not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

Donald Trump found guilty as fuck – May 30, 2024!

The Supreme Court cannot be allowed to become the ultimate, unaccountable arbiter of everything.

There are a lot more evil idiots than evil geniuses.

Republican also-rans: four mules fighting over a turnip.

You cannot shame the shameless.

Come on, man.

Let the trolls come, and then ignore them. that’s the worst thing you can do to a troll.

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

Fear or fury? The choice is ours.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

You are so fucked. Still, I wish you the best of luck.

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

We’re watching the self-immolation of the leading world power on a level unprecedented in human history.

This is a fabulous coda to this story: AZ Governor Brewer admits she’s not even sure if the goddamn racist law she’s so hellbent on defending would even work to protect the border at all.

Mmm…I love the smell of hurt wingnut fee-fees in the late evening. Personally I think you should regard this as a badge of honor.

Or any time, really. Morning, afternoon tea, during full moons, Arbor Day, leap years… they always hit the spot.

Personally I think you should regard this as a badge of honor.

Oh, shit. If I could frame it… gaze upon its loveliness daily. A thing of beauty is a joy forever.

O/T, but during the 2006 election, my mother (even more of a bleeding-heart liberal than I am) somehow got on a GOP mailing list. She got some certificate signed by Bill Frist sent to her in the mail that thanked her “for embodying the highest Republican ideals and values”. She framed it and it now hangs over her toilet.

A good documentary to go with the leak of Afghan war logs:
    Restrepo (youtube trailer)

    Blurb:
Restrepo chronicles the deployment of a U.S. platoon of courageous American soldiers in Afghanistan’s Korengal Valley, considered to be one of the most dangerous postings in the U.S. military.

Yo, Steepman, if you’re out there–I listened to those two songs you posted last night. Did not care for the Faith Hill song or the video, but I really dug the Pauline Croze tune.

omg! that was great. You know what though? He reminds me of Rahm. When he put his hand on his hip I immediately thought of Rahm. Then I thought – “that must be what Rahm looks like when he’s screaming and cursing”

Time magazine’s cover is of an Afghan woman who had her ears and nose sliced off by her Taliban husband. Time’s editor explains:

The much publicized release of classified documents by WikiLeaks has already ratcheted up the debate about the war. Our story and the haunting cover image by the distinguished South African photographer Jodi Bieber are meant to contribute to that debate. We do not run this story or show this image either in support of the U.S. war effort or in opposition to it.

Which is of course bullshit since their headline is “What Happens If We Leave Afghanistan.” It’s a tad misleading as well, as Greg Mitchell says:

Also worth mentioning: the girl on the cover was attacked not in long ago days of Taliban rule but with tens of thousands of U.S. troops in the country.

If Time wants to argue that we should stay in Afghanistan, fine. If they want to highlight how awful the Taliban is to women, I’d applaud them for that. But don’t use this poor girl as a prop, say that’s what’ll happen if we leave, and pretend you’re neither “in support of the U.S. war effort or in opposition to it.” That’s some of the most cowardly bullshit I’ve ever seen.

    More here.

Looks like the Army has decided that our returning soldiers who commit suicide were just scum. No need to worry about it.

“A new Army report has found that inattention to rising rates of drug abuse and criminal activity among soldiers and not repeat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan is responsible for the record-high levels of suicide among troops.”
    tinyurl.com/29t8hmj

This is sort of horrific. It’s like the Army is raping the memory of the dead. It was their own fault for wearing that sexy dress.

I’m working on a thesis which states that the American republic is simply a proof of the laws of thermodynamics. Hats off to entropy, hurray!

@Yutsano: Seems sort of pathetic to me. How can you have any effect if you get removed from the discussion? Anyone can get banned from a private forum just for acting like a jerk. Not that suzanne did that, but I see comments disagreeing and criticizing Brewer on her facebook page.

Well, if by “acting like a jerk”, you mean “telling Brewer she’s uneducated and incompetent, and posting the links to prove it”, then yes, I suppose I did act like a jerk. Oh, and I did correct her supporters’ grammar and spelling. They didn’t like that so much. Hey, my education’s good for SOMETHING.

I used to think it was worthwhile to engage people like that, and respond to their viewpoints with facts and statistics. Then I had the following conversation while making phone calls on behalf of my local congresscritter:

Me: Good afternoon, ma’am. I’m calling from Victory 2010 to find out where people stand on the election this November. If the election were held today, would you vote for Congressman Harry Mitchell, or his Republican opponent?
Random-Ass Lady: Who’s his Republican opponent?
Me: That hasn’t been decided yet, ma’am. The Republican primary will be held in August, and there are going to be at least six candidates in the r—
    Random-Ass Lady: DEFINITELY the Republican.

    Nope. I’m done.
