Take a moment and learn about hands-only CPR. One thing the video doesn’t mention: the recommended rate of 100 compressions per minute is approximately the same rhythm as “Staying Alive”.

Also “Another One Bites the Dust.”

Studies have shown that Stayin Alive works better for teaching CPR, though.

A song with a beat closer to 100 beats per minute is “Another One Bites The Dust”; “Staying Alive” is just more politically correct, but Another One Bites the dust has a more memorable base line. See:

As a BLS instructor, I would also like to point out that, for those who think ‘staying alive’ is just too positive to sing, the song ‘Another One Bites the Dust’ also keeps you in the 100 comps/min.

I have to be BLS certified (and ACLS) for work, but I know if I didn’t… and ever had kids… I’d be sure to take CPR/First Aid at the YMCA every 2 years or so. I’m surprised more people don’t consider it necessary.

That’s “Stayin’ Alive,” not “Staying.” Just sayin’. And a perfect opportunity for me to blogwhore.

I have to recertify in Infant, Child, and Adult CPR on Saturday. I’ll see what the instructor says about “Stayin’ Alive.” This particular instructor doesn’t have much of a sense of humor, though – the irony of scheduling a CPR class on 9/11 didn’t even penetrate.

I learned about AOBTD and SA on the Radiolab show Stayin’ Alive. Brilliant all the way through (and there’s finally a new show up — yay!)

To copy and paste and slightly paraphrase from below:

I don’t know what’s more clueless in this passage: the 70’s disco reference…

The macabre humor of using ‘Another One Bites the Dust’ must be fairly universal among EMTs then, since my CPR instructor suggested it also too.

He also said don’t be shocked if you hear ribs crack when doing chest compressions on little old ladies.
