Even one more KO thread- if those fuckers at Comcast go after Chuck, then the shit will go down in the Cole household.
Also, is it possible Keith is taking over for Regis?
*** Update ***
BTW- I just love Saturday. Woke up early this morning, walked the dogs, and then sat down and thought about all the stuff I need to do. Change sheets, clean toilets, vacuum living room, four loads of laundry, wash basement, clean kitchen, etc. Thought about it for a bit, and then went back to bed from 10 to 11. Saturdays rock. And now NPR has Rigoletto on, and I can clean to that.

Umm…no no and no. I shudder to think what Keith would do to that bubblehead Kelly Ripa. Plus Keith just doesn’t do nice well.

John, I just read a SI story about the Jets-Patriots game. I don’t even like the Jets, but I had tears in my eyes reading about the pre-game stuff about Mr. Byrd & his comments to team.
I’m sure you know, but Coach Ryan is going to have them frothing at the mouth when they begin game. Sorta like the football player in ‘Fast Times at Ridgemont High’ after he thought the other team had vandoed his car.
That said, Go Steelers! Also, too.

Hannity & Olbermann!

Keith’s style is good for sports. It’s very aggressive and bombastic. Daytime TV is generally aimed at women and goes for a more understanding and listening vibe with a dash of helpful hints and the occasional catfight to keep ratings up. I don’t see Keith doing that very well for very long. Although I agree if he subs for a day I’d watch.

Olbermann and Ripa…now that’s a hilarious picture. Ripa may be nice and all but she is just..so…bubbly.

Comcast has a sports network ‘Versus’. What do you want to bet that Keith was tapped to go over there and knock it into shape and turn it into a first-tier network under NBC?
I should add – ESPN is the most profitable network on cable. It’s a very lucrative area for NBC to plumb.

@Keith G: To people for whom the prospect of a Palin in high office is not already self-refuting, no possible refutation would be satisfactory.
Save yourself the effort. She’s got an approval rate right now just north of chlamydia anyways.
JIm, Foolish Literalist
@Keith G: Where to be begin? She’s a liar and a demagogue who cheapens our political discourse and our politics every time she opens her mouth. Just for starters: She did not say “Thanks, but no thanks” to that “Bridge to Nowhere”; “pallin’ around with terrerrists” (phonetic spelling); the dangerous, delusional nitwittery of believing that even though she’s breathtakingly unqualified for the job (“we need a Department of Law or something”, not knowing there were two Koreas, much less why), she thinks Old Man McCain raised her up beyond her competency because it was “God’s will” (ask you relative, if s/he’s of that bent, if that meant it was God’s will that McCain should kill his own chances of becoming President and ensure the election of Barack Obama) rather than a cheap, ignorant stunt rooted in profound contempt for this country, for the office of the President, for his own base and most especially for women voters.
I could probably come up with more.

@Keith G:
Good luck with that. The MSM is generally afraid to take on Palin. I’d suggest looking at Sully’s list of Palin’s lies. Maybe something in there would be useful. Didn’t Krauthammer and George Will both say some non-flattering things about her recently? About how she hadn’t prepared herself for running for Pres? Maybe you could look up those.
Otherwise, there are some good nuggets in the Alaskan blogger sites and anti-Palin sites. You could start with Mudflats to see if there is anything there.
The problem you’re going to run into is, if the source is considered a “liberal” by your relative then they won’t trust that person’s dismantling of her. Which is why I suggest Krauthammer and Will.
Liberals don’t “hate” Palin, so you can start with that rebuttal. They feel she’s unqualified to be President and was unqualified to be VP. She lies, she won’t hold open press conferences, she is uneducated about foreign and domestic policy and is generally unserious about anything having to do with governing. I don’t hate her. I just don’t trust her and wouldn’t want her anywhere in the government. Her judgment is flawed and, as far as I can tell, she’s a grifter and narcissist. She would be a dangerous President.

I’ve always had a bit of a thing for Regis, because I get the feeling he’s actually a snarky, funny motherfucker. Watch any episode of “Millionaire” in which someone gets an easy question wrong. I *know* KO is funny and snarky. I could probably get behind LIVE! With Keith and Kelly!
I saw an episode once in which Anderson Cooper subbed for Regis. Kelly handed AC his own ass.
Side note: Does anyone else remember watching Channel One in junior high or high school? Anderson Cooper and Lisa Ling were the main hosts when I was in junior high. And AC had brown hair then.

I need some dog advice. The snow storm that caused havoc in the Atlanta area almost two weeks ago also caused havoc with Miss Moxie. She woke up one morning to snow and ice and spread eagle several times. Now when the sun goes down she starts vibrating and continues to do so for a few hours. She is uneducated and obviously doesn’t value education. Look at her own college history — 5 schools to get a “degree” in journalism? And then look at her kids’ college history. Oh right, her kids aren’t going to college. Not that everyone has to, but book larnin’ doesn’t seem to be a big priority in the Palin household. Can you be educated without going to college? Yes, but I see no evidence of that having happened here.
Not everyone needs book learning, but I would say the “leader of the free world” should have it. Pig-ignorant is just not a good thing for the U.S. President to be.

Since the football season has been over for two weeks (Go Saints!), I find myself thinking about what would be the best matchup, and I’m in a quandary. Would Jets-Packers be the first time that 2 six-seeds have met in the Superbowl? That might be worth rooting for, though it opens up the potential for the Jets actually winning the damn thing, which would make south Florida completely unlivable for the next, well, forever.
So instead I’m reading this piece on why mixologists all suck.

The best thing about being a cycling fan is that being up close to the action is free. No tickets required. Of course the airfare and hotels, etc. aren’t free. But if you’re in the area it’s open to all. I loved that aspect of it. It’s not many sports where you can see elite athletes compete up close and personal for free.

@BGinCHI: I do sir. Lots of hills too. Some nice roads that don’t get alot of traffic.
I’ve been trying to take up mountain biking. Have found out it is much more difficult than street riding (IMO). The roughness of trails & extreme closeness of immovable trees means you have to be mentally ‘on’ all the time. Much much gear shifting too as you go up & down steep hills.

The TDF was a huge traveling circus. We went to some starts and one finish and met them part way through stages. We rode before they arrived (but after roads were closed) or followed them. It was seriously fun and a great way to experience the party atmosphere and whole traveling circus aspect.
@Paul in KY:
Yeah, she’s playing a part. That would be fine if she were on a scripted show or even a reality series. But it’s news. She’s supposed to be telling the truth. If they called it “Fox Scripted News Network” that would be different. I wish they did.
BGinCHI
@Paul in KY: Yeah, it’s hard to get used to it if you haven’t had years of practice. I did it for years but now that I live in Chi it’s harder to get out regularly. Hence, when I do go with friends (who are very skilled and go really fast) it’s totally white-knuckle and I come home with a lot of bruises. Still, a lot of fun. It would be best to get practice in less tight terrain, like open prairie or fire roads or something. You’ll get better if you keep at it. Put your seat down and sit your ass back and don’t clench the front break. And don’t be hesitant; keep reminding yourself the bike wants to go forward and/or downhill. Don’t force it.

The Daily Show takedown of Gretchen Carlson’s dumb act is here.

@Mark S.: Thanks for that.

Niki Finke at Deadline Hollywood is reporting that her sources say the Comcast folks want to turn MSNBC towards the right and achieve “balance” rather than have a liberal network.
http://www.deadline.com/2011/01/nbcu-statement-msnbc-and-keith-olberman-have-ended-their-contract-last-show-tonight/
The moves are simultaneous with new owner Comcast starting to show its hand over the broadcast network and cable NBCU after receiving FCC approval. “He’s been very problematic,” an NBCU source told Deadline about Comcast’s attitude to Olbermann. Officially, the Comcast takeover is next week. But word has been circulating for months now that the new owners have wanted to “tinker” with MSNBC and had many changes in store, including a right turn for the left-wing cable channel so that it represents both political points of view more evenly. It is well known that both Comcast chief Brian Roberts and NBCU chief Steve Burke have donated heavily to the Republican party with Burke more recently donating money to a few Democrats as well as heavily to Republicans. Roberts was a co-chairman of the host committee at the 2000 Republican Convention while Burke raised at least $200,000 for George W Bush’s re-election campaign.

Day 10
On day ten of my fierce and ongoing quest to honor President Obama’s heartfelt and inspiring call to action – “to live up to the example that young Christina Green expected in how our democracy should function” – I, as a Nobel Peace Prize nominee myself, do now hereby cancel the biggest arms deal in history, even though our partner, Saudi Arabia, is also as fully democratic and peace-loving as myself and our #1-in-history-with-a-bullet country. I thought about this sale very long and very hard, and I concluded that it would just be morally wrong, and would totally dishonor Christina’s memory. Sometimes doing the right thing is also the easiest thing you can do.

Ha! I know that feeling. You think you’re doing great and suddenly you realize they’re only pedaling at an easy cruising speed for them. And boom, you’re a mile behind. So demoralizing.
I’ve learned to just enjoy what I can do, which these days isn’t much since I’m rehabbing a hip injury. I hope to be on the bike a little once it warms up. But right now I’m easing back into things like walking.

@Violet: Hang in there. At least it’s winter and you can heal.
Where do you live/ride?
Group ride season here still a few months away, and I’m really ready to get back outside without 5 layers.

Something that annoyed me in an otherwise good article about the aging federal judiciary:
Average age is skewed when there is a high infant mortality. Do you think the Framers would have made the minimum age for President 35 if most people died when they were 40?

@Violet: Armstrong raced in GA several years back and just because I happened to out early in the morning, he and the USPO team passed me. He must have been scouting out the finishing line. It was very odd just watching him pass by like it was an everyday occurrence.

@asiangrrlMN: Did you get the new version yet?

Naked Rigoletto rocks.
kdaug
@JPL: Oh, God. Now all I can picture is Cole, naked and crying, mopping his basement, opera blaring way too loud, with the dogs looking concerned at the top of the stairs and Tunch hiding under the bed.
Thanks for the visual. You’ve just drained the productivity from my Saturday.
I’ll be in my bucket.

I am off to a party tonight. This is of no importance. I just wanted to test commenting from my Ipod touch.
Carry on.

So the Orange Plastic Talking Head figured $7 million annually was not enough for producing an audience only one-fourth the size of O’Reilly’s? And, he was reportedly a total asshole to everyone (bosses, co-workers, underlings) to boot?
Fuck him and the bathtub he soaks in. Maddow’s little production is superior to his, anyway.

Need clarification. How can one lone guy have four loads of laundry. How long has it been?
Also, how do you wash a basement?

Someone is going to have to explain to me why guys like “Chuck” so much. My husband loves that show. I think it’s lame.

@Davis X. Machina: @JIm, Foolish Literalist: @Violet: @Svensker: @kdaug: And I am sure a few I missed, thanks.
What Interests me is the mechanics of the “liberals hate Palin” claim, which is to my mind a kind of passive-aggressive attack on the left. While I am sure some liberals do hate her, I wonder if an equal number also hate(or at least dislike) Obama.
I think (maybe its that I hope) that most liberals reserve their hate for more worthy occasions and simply interact with all things Palin with concern, bemusement, and/or annoyance.

@Southern Beale: BOOBIES!!
(It’s the only real answer I can come up with. I watched two episodes and lost interest. This doth not explain RedKitten however…)

I so need to get my road bike rehabbed and back on the road.
Klein Performance with all 1988 Shimano Ultegra components.
Sweet, easy to ride bike. None of the twitchy handling of the Klein Quantum, and easier on the butt. But if you get out of the saddle and push it, you can climb. Great bike for a big guy.
Yutsano
@burnspbesq: Not related to biking, but a mutual interest nonetheless: talked to my immediate manager yesterday. She used to be an RA but came back over to ACS (not sure why) but she was more than willing to help me get that part of my career path set up. I think that suits my personality better than being an RO, however YMMV.

@Yutsano:
I totally get where you’re coming from. Collection is just a tough gig mentally.
If you’re going to move over to the exam side, LB&I is the division you want to be in. SB/SE and W&I are borrrrrrring. Same issues all the time, unreported income and unsubstantiated deductions. TE/GE is for geeks.
On the other hand, if you go into CID you get a gun.
Yutsano
@burnspbesq: LB&I was in the career plan as it was, since that’s where International is. If I play my cards right, I could aim for one of the overseas offices. London would be okay, but personally I’d go for Paris. Never been there, love the culture, and a three hour train ride from the Dawg to boot. :) Too bad the competition for the overseas offices is so damn high.

You mean Gretchen, who despite being a Rhodes Scholar has to “google” the word “Czar” to know what it means? John Stewart has torn her into teeny little pieces several times. Twas a thing of beauty.

Oh jeez definitely not me, the cyclebots who dropped me like a flaming dog turd. At my best (back in the day) I could maybe pull 30 for a few minutes on an oulde school road bike. With a 16 lb carbon bike and aero wheels I might have eked out a couple more but regardless, I was always an earthling and the good riders were aliens. Pros could hang in the pack for hours and then simply motor away anytime they wanted, just the way it is.

Well let’s not exagerate her academic achievements. Although she graduated from Stanford with honors (probably couldn’t get into Berkeley), she was not a Rhodes Scholar. She only “studied at Oxford” at some point.

On the other hand Rachel Maddow, also a Stanford grad, actually was a Rhodes Scholar. In fact, she has a PhD from Oxford.
