Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Dear media: perhaps we ought to let Donald Trump speak for himself!

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

Stay strong, because they are weak.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

The real work of an opposition party is to hold the people in power accountable.

DeSantis transforming Florida into 1930s Germany with gators and theme parks.

One lie, alone, tears the fabric of reality.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

Republicans want to make it harder to vote and easier for them to cheat.

Is trump is trying to break black America over his knee? signs point to ‘yes’.

Following reporting rules is only for the little people, apparently.

Museums are not America’s attic for its racist shit.

There is no compromise when it comes to body autonomy. You either have it or you do not.

The most dangerous place for a black man in America is in a white man’s imagination.

Come on, man.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires Republicans to act in good faith.

Oh FFS you might as well trust a 6-year-old with a flamethrower.

Marge, god is saying you’re stupid.

America is going up in flames. The NYTimes fawns over MAGA celebrities. No longer a real newspaper.

Mediocre white men think RFK Jr’s pathetic midlife crisis is inspirational. The bar is set so low for them, it’s subterranean.

The “burn-it-down” people are good with that until they become part of the kindling.

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

You know it’s bad when the Project 2025 people have to create training videos on “How To Be Normal”.

How?

I can’t sleep, so I was flipping through the channels, and I ended up watching about 5 minutes of Taxi (the recent movie, not the superb television show with the same name).

It is clear to me that there are two types of people in the world- those who think Jimmy Fallon is funny, and the rest of us. Other than his reliably amusing Bawstahn routine on SNL, Fallon is awful.

How did that movie ever get made?

How did that movie ever get made?

I kind of wonder how most movies got made.

How did that movie ever get made?

    Giselle.

I actually haven’t seen the movie, but I have flipped by it when it’s been on, lingering anytime one of her scene’s is playing.

    Just saying.

How did that movie ever get made?

Well, typically, there are actors who “perform” by saying “lines” to a “camera”, which records their behaviors on “film” or, these days, on a digital medium. That recording is modified, edited, and changed, and the result is printed onto a sprocketed flexible backing.

    “Taxi”?

    Sheesh.

I recommend “Showgirls” with Elizabeth Berkeley or “Gigli.”

I know you will just love them.

God, I hate Jimmy Fallon. What a talentless cocksucker. You’re two for two tonight, with the Phish post, AFAIC.

So I’m listening to the BBC… and they’re saying that Bush plans to give a speech tomorrow outlining how he is going to withdraw troops from Iraq.

We sure could have saved a lot of time and heartache on that one if the GOP had simply voted for Murtha’s resolution. :-)

    Oh yeah. Jimmy Fallon sux.

I haven’t seen the movie, nor do I wish to, but I do like the line from Queen Latifah: “Open the door. I don’t want to get Dae-Woo on me.” (roughly paraphrased)

I am still pissed about the PHISH post. I have no problem watching you bash dems, libs, dirty hippies, greiving mothers trying to do their patriotic duty to stop the war that took her son (yes, I am kidding)……….but just don’t bash the boys. After this many years, they are like the family dog. And I love my dogs.

    Listening to Phish…watching Jimmy Fallon…

My god, man! Snap out of it! It’s not too late!

BTW, Jimmy Fallon was NEVER funny. Not now, not five years ago, not ever. He helped cement the current SNL trend of smirking and laughing at one’s own jokes before even finishing the delivery that currently infects that show.

Often with movies like Taxi I wonder if they start out as great scripts, but get destroyed by the studio process.

Perhaps the screenplay started out as something as perfect as Taxi Driver, but as it wound its way up the studio ladder, one exec said “Hey, if we reconifgured this as a comedy this would make a great vehicle for Jimmy Fallon” and another said “well, Jimmy would draw them in from the suburbs, lets find someone who could attract the ‘urban demographic’, is Queen Latifa available?”.

Or it could have sucked from the start…

The Davinci Code sucked. The writing was simplistic and the plot fell apart at the end. The premise could have been a contender, if the author hadn’t botched it so spectacularly.

    Fallon sucks hard.

Heh, it appears a bunch of Christians have there panties in a ruffle over the Da Vinci code.

I guess the true story about early Christianity pisses you guys/gals off?

I thought the book was great. And yes, I know the book was a work of fiction but many of the passages about the rise of Christianity and it’s early history were indeed true. In particular the stuff about Constatine.

And there are dozens of unfunny comedians out there making bad films — I can’t get fired up about Fallon, who I liked on SNL (anyone white boy who does that good a Chris Rock impression is talented), although I can’t imagine seeing one of his films.

    Bad books piss me off.

You do realize that statement is purely subjective.

You cannot objectively say the book was “bad”; you can only give your personal take on it.

And I’m sure more people would rate the book as “good” rather than “bad”.

Well, my take was it was bad, very bad. And, yes, that is my opinion. I am not attempting to offer any sort of critique on the book’s literary merit.

read “Holy Blood, Holy Grail” if you want a bunch of nonsense strung together as a Christian conspiracy.

Since last night, Bush has changed course… Now he’s repeating the same old bullshit about staying the course without adjusting tactics. blah blah blah

I read Holy Blood, Holy Grail which is a much better book. I think they are suing Dan Brown for ripping off their book. Dan Brown’s writing sucked and his plot could have been much better. The ending was stupid and the writing read like a young adult book. It has nothing to do with Christianity, but everything to do with a low rent book with a subpar plotline. The premise alone deserved a better effort than Brown was able to give it.

    Bad books piss me off.

Yes. He couldn’t have fleshed out the historic timeline a little more? I think he is a horrible writer.

Why read The DaVinci Code when there are perfectly good copies of Foucault’s Pendulum floating around?

I’m the wrong one to ask about Taxi; I don’t even understand how SNL has been on the air for the last ten years.

    Jimmy Fallon was NEVER funny

I’m no Fallon fan either, but it never ceases to amaze me that he scored a role (a serious one, no less) in what I think is one of the best mini-series of all time, Band of Brothers. I forget the exact episode – it may have been #6, but it was just before Easy Co. took up positions in the forest surrounding Bastogne. They’re trying to scrounge up ammo to face the coming Germans and Fallon drives up in a jeep full of rifle rounds and such.

Of course, if you think his comedy sucks, you should see when he attempts to be “serious”. It’s probably one of the worst acted scenes in the entire series.

I’m an atheist. You don’t have to be a Christian just to hate “The Davinci Code,” just someone who either likes good books, or is offended by terrible writing. The opening of TDC is a gripper, followed by 300 pages of the most predictable, and yet simultaneously wholly unbelievable crapola I’ve ever wasted three days of my life reading. By the end, I was just reading it so I could complain about it afterwards. The main character of TDC gets my nomination for “the most incredible forgettable main character in a novel, ever.”
