Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. keep building.

… gradually, and then suddenly.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

“Until such time as the world ends, we will act as though it intends to spin on.”

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

I don’t recall signing up for living in a dystopian sci-fi novel.

Someone should tell Republicans that violence is the last refuge of the incompetent, or possibly the first.

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

We’re watching the self-immolation of the leading world power on a level unprecedented in human history.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

So fucking stupid, and still doing a tremendous amount of damage.

Hey Washington Post, “Democracy Dies in Darkness” was supposed to be a warning, not a mission statement.

SCOTUS: It’s not “bribery” unless it comes from the Bribery region of France. Otherwise, it’s merely “sparkling malfeasance”.

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

When they say they are pro-life, they do not mean yours.

Stop using mental illness to avoid talking about armed white supremacy.

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

It is possible to do the right thing without the promise of a cookie.

Today’s gop: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

The Season of Giving

Kevin Drum lists a number of conservative blogs he reads on a daily basis (we don’t make the cut, which means there is room to grow next year!), and I thought it would be interesting to list the liberal/progressive/Democratic blogs I read on a daily basis. These are in no particular order:

The Carpetbagger Report– While these are in no particular order, The Carpetbagger Report is a first stop for both me and Tim F.

The Daily Kos– If you want to know what the left is up to, the first place to check is the Daily Kos. And not just the front page stuff, but the recommended diaries as well. At over a half million hits a day, dKos does not need any advertising, but since this is what I read, I thought I would list it.

TalkLeft– If you are interested in liberal viewpoints on all things policy and all things crime, check out TalkLeft.

Mark Kleiman and friends– Almost as cranky as me, Mark Kleiman is always up to date on the Republican policy scandal du jour (from a liberal perspective).

Crooks and Liars– John Amato’s leftwing blog is one your one stop shop for video from the MSM.

The Daily Howler– Bob Somerby actually is crankier than me, and the most tenacious critic on the web.

Ezra Klein– Formerly of Pandagon, Ezra struck out on his own and is a worthwhile daily stop.

Sadly, No!– Complete and total smartasses, and this description won’t offend them.

The Whiskey Bar– The best writer of the Kos alums, and an acerbic and full-throttle liberal, Billmon is always worth your time.

The Bull Moose– My kind of Democrat.

Ain’t No Bad Dude– He doesn’t blog enough, but I check out Brian Linse every day regardless.

Feministe– Just to see what the ‘chicks’ are up to.

This isn’t a complete and total list, because I read far more than these (including Kevin Drum’s Washington Monthly), but these are some of my daily stops. I actually read more liberal/left blogs than conservative ones, because I am a member of the VRWC and get Karl Rove’s memos. I already know what the Republicans are thinking.

At any rate, there is my list. If Tim has a list of conservative blogs he checks out, I will put that up later.

Hee hee, nope. That’s totally us.

Conservative blogs I read: Balloon Juice (duh), Hit & Run, Belgravia Dispatch, Cathy Young, Drezner… I used to really like Volokh, but the quality has dropped since Levy left… von and Holsclaw and ObWings are good as well.

For what it’s worth, JC, you got mad props in Kevin’s comments.

I don’t think he has ever cared about civil liberties – he sees his job as protecting us, not protecting our liberties.

Yeah, you did get a lot of positive mentions over at Kevin’s. Even we commenters were complimented for how we manage to argue like mad banshees but not hold grudges (there are always exceptions, of course.)

Just our of curiosity, since you’ve divided your blogroll between center to right and left, how come Pharyngula end up on the left? Are we now defining the center as intelligent designers….I thought it was only the fringe?

Thanks for the list, John. Incidentally, I actually read this blog (and Obsidian Wings) far, FAR more than any other blogs on the Web; it’s more interesting when I can find people to agree with AND disagree with, particularly when few are acting out of bad faith. Merry Christmas and keep up the crankiness.

Is Bull Moose a Democrat? I was under the impression he was a fed-up Republican who went Independant.

hey, don’t i get props for being the first to give Balloon Juice (and its commenters) props over at Kevin’s site? :)

and the one essential liberal blogger that JC missed was digby over at Hullaballoo.

A few other don’t miss — Jesus’s General (screamingly funny — and a great comment section as well), firedoglake and thenexthurrah.typepad.com/the_next_hurrah/ (both very smart — and both very good at finding the information that many of the more popular “liberal” blogs don’t have) and steve clemons.

“I was under the impression he was a fed-up Republican who went Independant.”

That sounds about right to me.

Is Bull Moose a Democrat? I was under the impression he was a fed-up Republican who went Independant.

He’s trying to influence the Democrats, but hasn’t figured out that the way to do that is to say “I have a better way, follow my lead.” rather than “You are all fucking idiots, only I am right.”

As for conservative blogs. I only read redstate, powerline, freerepublic and little green footballs. These are the intellectual powerhouses of rightwing blogs. Everything else is just so cliche and cookie cutter.
