Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

Trump’s cabinet: like a magic 8 ball that only gives wrong answers.

Today’s gop: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

They want us to be overwhelmed and exhausted. Focus. Resist. Oppose.

Peak wingnut was a lie.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

Sometimes the world just tells you your cat is here.

“Until such time as the world ends, we will act as though it intends to spin on.”

“Loving your country does not mean lying about its history.”

There are a lot more evil idiots than evil geniuses.

We will not go back.

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

When you’re a Republican, they let you do it.

Republican speaker of the house Mike Johnson is the bland and smiling face of evil.

Reality always gets a vote in the end.

They were going to turn on one another at some point. It was inevitable.

American history and black history cannot be separated.

We are learning that “working class” means “white” for way too many people.

If you still can’t see these things even now, maybe politics isn’t your forte and you should stop writing about it.

Today in our ongoing national embarrassment…

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

rich, arrogant assholes who equate luck with genius

Eve Kayden’s suggestion might stop some bad legislation:

I think that whenever a law is declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court, the sponsors of the bill in Congress should be barred from holding any government office in the future. After all, they did break their oaths to uphold the Constitution.

Another test, and I loved this one. I challenge anyone to think of a funnier series of books.

Tom Cruise came out and babbled for ten minutes, and all I could think is ‘What the hell does he see in scientology?’

I am watching the Oscars, and I deserve whatever I get in the way of smarmy punishment. I should just wait for Ken Layne’s write-up, but he is probably smart enough to be out drinking instead of watching the awards.

News Flash: Arafat is a terrorist. Thank God at least Cheney recognizes it.

“It is slow going,” a U.S. official said, speaking to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity. “Progress has been very slow. It’s fair to point a finger of blame at the Palestinians.”

I rarely disagree with Andrew

I rarely disagree with Andrew Sullivan, but when I do, it is usually a major disagreement. Yesterday, Sullivan unleashed a grievously stupid remark that almost knocked me out of my chair:

Homosexuals have historically never done well under repressive leftist or rightist regimes; they are far more likely to flourish under limited government, low taxes, and a robust foreign policy.

Note to gay conservatives- Historically, NO ONE has done well under repressive leftist or rightist regimes. EVERYONE is far more likely to flourish under limited government, low taxes, and a robust foreign policy.

This belief is what makes you CONSERVATIVE, and it has nothing to do with being GAY. NOTHING. Not even a LITTLE.

Sullivan goes on to point out that regimes such as the Islamo-Fascist Taliban and the Nazi’s were notoriously cruel to homosexuals. Cruelty, I must add, is merely one of those characteristics of a repressive regime (as is repressing people). Lots of other people suffered under those two repressive regimes. In the case of the former, jews, women, christians- generally everyone other than Mullah Omar had it pretty shitty. In the case of the latter, well, Jews, Gypsies, Slavs, and ALL OF WESTERN EUROPE got it pretty hard.

What bothered me most about the statement is that it seemed counterintuitive to one of the main arguments by homosexuals in recent years- that they are just like everyone else except for their choice in mates. And I would tend to agree with that assertion. My homosexual friends do everything I do except for one thing- although with rare exceptions they do dress better than me. They have families, they have pets, they have children, they have jobs, they have hopes and dreams and aspirations and they feel hurt and they feel joy and are pretty much the same damned thing you and I are except for that one little issue. So why it would come to Sullivan as some sort of revelation that gays do better under limited government is beyond me. The only people who do not fare well under limited government are Democrats and those who work in government.

The world doesn’t disappear just because you close you eyes, does it?

That is from the movie that should have multiple Oscar nominations, but has only one. That is why you should boycott the Oscars- but of course I won’t.
