Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

When you’re a Republican, they let you do it.

Bad people in a position to do bad things will do bad things because they are bad people. End of story.

So fucking stupid, and still doing a tremendous amount of damage.

Shut up, hissy kitty!

Their shamelessness is their super power.

Their freedom requires your slavery.

They spent the last eight months firing professionals and replacing them with ideologues.

Every reporter and pundit should have to declare if they ever vacationed with a billionaire.

The unpunished coup was a training exercise.

Come on, man.

I did not have this on my fuck 2025 bingo card.

“When somebody takes the time to draw up a playbook, they’re gonna use it.”

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

Fundamental belief of white supremacy: white people are presumed innocent, minorities are presumed guilty.

Let there be snark.

We need to vote them all out and restore sane Democratic government.

Wake up. Grow up. Get in the fight.

Nothing says ‘pro-life’ like letting children go hungry.

Everybody saw this coming.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

This must be what justice looks like, not vengeful, just peaceful exuberance.

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

The desire to stay informed is directly at odds with the need to not be constantly enraged.

Republican also-rans: four mules fighting over a turnip.

BTW- Am I the only registered Republican who is sickened by this orgy of spending? Goodness- it is just appalling. I think I might be ripping up my elephant card and following the lead of the Samizdata folks.

OK. The pundits all seem

OK. The pundits all seem agog with this speech. I thought it was a luke-warm ‘O.k.’

I still think his best speech was his acceptance speech at the 2000 Republican Convention. In particular, these lines:

A time of prosperity is a test of vision. And our nation today needs vision. That is a fact … or as my opponent might call it, a “risky truth scheme.” Every one of the proposals I’ve talked about tonight, he has called a “risky scheme,” over and over again.

It is the sum of his message — the politics of the roadblock, the philosophy of the stop sign.

If my opponent had been there at the moon launch, it would have been a “risky rocket scheme.”

If he’d been there when Edison was testing the light bulb, it would have been a “risky anti-candle scheme.”

And if he’d been there when the Internet was invented well … I understand he actually was there for that.

He now leads the party of Franklin Delano Roosevelt. But the only thing he has to offer is fear itself.

SOTU Prediction update-

#5 partially confirmed. David Gergen mentioned that BUsh was JFK-like in his call for service. I am almost sure Matthews will say it now.

#2- Too early to tell.

#3- Somewhat confirmed. Subject brought up immediately on MSNBC.

#4- Confirmed. Gephardt’s opening line was on parties united. Couldn’t see Hillary’s calves, but I am SURE they are still fat.

#5- Not yet confirmed. Matthews not on yet.

#6- Nothing really to confirm. Gephardt is nasal and whiny always.

#7- Can not confirm fully. Did not see them much (Saw Schumer only once, but he wwas clapping and smiling).

He seems to be halfway

He seems to be halfway through, and I am already drawing a map of my backyard so I know where I have buried my wallet. He does not realize that Congress can not spell fiscal responsibility, let alone understand it.

My SOTU address predictions: Prediction

by John Cole|  January 29, 20028:12 pm| Leave a Comment

This post is in: Open Threads

My SOTU address predictions:

Prediction #1- Bush, with the gleeful support of all the ‘fiscal conservatives’ in congress, will propose mammoth new spending programs, forgetting once again that they are fiscal conservatives.

Prediciton #2- Anything that is not a textbook example of profligate spending on an unneeded social program will be assailed by Democrats as raping the social security trust fund. Everything else (drug benefits for the geezers, etc.) will be assailed as not fully funded, proof that Bush is not a compassionate conservative.

Prediction #3- Anything Bush says or does not say about Enron will be determined to be proof of his complicity in the scandal by the idiots on tv.

Prediction #4- Democrats and Republicans will be united on the war on terrorism, and Hillary will have fat calves.

Prediction #5- At least once after the speech, Chris Matthews will gush how much Bush has grown, and then attempt to compare him favorably to someone who normally churns my stomach (2-1 odds it is John F. Kennedy, 4-1 it is FDR, 8-1 Bill Clinton).

Prediction #6- Gephardt will appear nasal and whiny in his response.

Prediction #7- Chuck Schumer and Bob Toricelli will clap as loud or louder than most Republicans.

Prediction #8- The most contentious issue discussed tonight will be National Missile Defense. This will be the one issue to get the pundits and the leftists (pat Leahy, etc.) really hopping mad, and they will scream that Bush is trying to use the war on terrorism to advance Star Wars. Maureen Dowd will have a tizzy in her next column. At least one person will point out that the World Trade Center was not destroyed with a missile.

That is it…
