Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

In after Baud. Damn.

I don’t recall signing up for living in a dystopian sci-fi novel.

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

Republican speaker of the house Mike Johnson is the bland and smiling face of evil.

You cannot shame the shameless.

Museums are not America’s attic for its racist shit.

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

Fear and negativity are contagious, but so is courage!

One way or another, he’s a liar.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

Speaker Mike Johnson is a vile traitor to the House and the Constitution.

Fear or fury? The choice is ours.

This is dead girl, live boy, a goat, two wetsuits and a dildo territory.  oh, and pink furry handcuffs.

They were going to turn on one another at some point. It was inevitable.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

Weird. Rome has an American Pope and America has a Russian President.

Innocent people do not delay justice.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires Republicans to act in good faith.

There is no compromise when it comes to body autonomy. You either have it or you do not.

“In this country American means white. everybody else has to hyphenate.”

My Prediction for Democratic VP

by John Cole|  December 8, 20038:20 pm| 29 Comments

This post is in: Politics

With the Gore endorsement of Dean pretty much sealing the nomination for Dean, it is now time for me to predict who Dean will choose as his running mate.

As Dean’s campaign has basiclly been “I hate everythijng about Bush and I was against the war,” it is time to run to the center. They are not going to pick a southern veep- politically the world has changed and a southern candidate simpy is not as important anymore, particularly to the Dems. They need someone young, dynamic, and centrist. They need someone who was in favor of the war to blunt the charges that Dean is McGovern, and they need someone who has not made a bunch of idiotic public proclamations in the last two years. They need someone who has not been bloodied by the nomination process, so the 8 other has-beens are out. They could use someone from the industrial midwest, and if they choose someone from the Senate, it needs to be someone who could be easily replaced by another Democrat, particularly a state with a Democratic governor. The answer is rather clear:

Dean’s running mate is going to be Evan Bayh.

This would also explain his well-timed and rather hawkish Q&A last week.

*** Update ***

And before people start claiming he is not centrist, lemme ask you this- how many other Democrats have pictures of themselves with Colin Powell, Kay Bailey Hutchinson, and Rick Santorum on their official Senate website? The question is, will he go the way of Lieberman in 2000 and throw out all of his principles to make sure Sheila Jackson lee and Maxine Waters are happy with the ticket? Of course, Bayh is not Jewish, so that solves part of the problem with the CBC.

*** Update #2 ***

I see the name Bill Richardson being floated. A good choice, but didn’t he JUST get elected, with his first action a drastic tac cut package? And Graham has become a nutter, not to mention the age issue.

Gore to Endorse Dean

by John Cole|  December 8, 20035:08 pm| 21 Comments

This post is in: Domestic Politics

I guess this is sort of a loser’s relay race, because Gore apparently has agreed to pass the baton to Dean.

Cool.

Also, will someone please tell Dean to drop it with this 9/11 consipiracy theory nonsense. I wrote about it the other day, and yesterday, Dean once again babbled about it. This time it was on Fox News, and to be fair, he was not the one who brought it up, but his answer was not confidence inspiring:

WALLACE: The most interesting theory is that the president was warned ahead of time by the Saudis. Why would you say that, Go who believe that. We don’t know what happened in 9/11. Tom Kean is trying to get some information from the president…

WALLACE: Do you believe that?

DEAN: … which doesn’t — no, I don’t believe that. I can’t imagine the president of the United States doing that. But we don’t know, and it’d be a nice thing to know.

WALLACE: I’m just curious why you would call that the most interesting theory.

DEAN: Because it’s a pretty odd theory.

What we do believe is that there was a lot of chatter that somehow was missed by the CIA and the FBI about this, and that for some reason we were unable to decide and get clear indications of what the attacks what were going to be. Because the president…

WALLACE: I guess…

DEAN: Because the president won’t give the information to the Kean commission we really don’t know what the explanation is.

Dean- the only acceptable answer is ‘Anyone who thinks the President knew about the attacks prior to 9/11 is mentally unbalanced.’ The Governor keeps trying to have his cake and eat it too. If you can not ‘imagine’ the President knowing about the attack in demand, why do you keep insisting that there are documents that would cleare this up that Bush refuses to give to the Kean commission. The reason is because you are being a weasel. Dean knows damned well that the only documents not being turned over to the Kean commission are several classified security briefings, and while they are not being formally turned over, some commission members are allowed to peruse the documents.

This guy is arrogant, hot-headed, condescending, dishonest, and has the wrong ideas regarding foreign policy and fiscal policy. I am going to love the general election. A long time friend (and former McCain supporter) the other day noted that he had sent $100 bucks to the Dean campaign, because “he is thoroughly unelectable.”

Impressive

by John Cole|  December 8, 20031:04 pm| 17 Comments

This post is in: Humorous

Calpundit takes a bill written, passed, and signed during the Clinton administration and manages to turn it into Bush-bashing.

Apparently the name Bush is synonomous with bad, or evil.

*** Update ***

People seem to be missing my point. I think the legislation at hand is a bad idea- any screwing with peer review is not wise, IMHO. What I find amusing is that the only way Kevin and Chris and Mr. Robbins can effectively highlight the pitfalls of the bill is to invoke the evil specter of George W. Bush.

News Flash

This post is in: General Stupidity

This will come as a shock- the people at MoveOn.Org are a bunch of liars. In Spinsanity’s words:

In short, with The Daily Mislead, MoveOn has become the leader of a new school of liberal criticism that seeks to brand every policy disagreement with President Bush as a broken promise or lie. These loose accusations trivialize charges of dishonesty, reducing them to little more than another partisan spin tactic.

Must have been reading the CalPundit’s Tautology of Lies. At any rate, does anyone else find it amusing that a group formed to ‘move on’ past the events that led to the statement “it depends on what the meaning of the word is, is” now lying at every opportunity? At least they have been consistent throughout with their respect for the truth. They have none.

Dump The BCS

by John Cole|  December 7, 20036:10 pm| 10 Comments

This post is in: Sports

It is time to dump the BCS. Every year, some team does exactly what it is supposed to do, and then gets hosed byt the BCs nitwits. This year’s victim is USC. Despite being #1 in the AP and CNN coaches polls, doing everything they had to, winning every game- by convincing margins, even, LSU and Oklahoma re going to the big dance.

And it makes no damn sense. I am now rooting for USC in the Rose Bowl. This current system just is not fair, and Kevin- your team got screwed. There is no other way to put it.

Dennis Kucinich, Sick F–k

by John Cole|  December 7, 20034:55 pm| 132 Comments

This post is in: Democratic Stupidity

Go see this abominable ad by Dennis Kucinich, using our war dead as agitprop in an ad claiming that the war in Iraq is solely for war profiteering.

Dennis Kucinich- Go to hell, you slimy little pissant.

And every Democrat who fails to disavow this ad and that man- you can go to hell, as well.

Can the parents of these soldiers sue Kucinich and the DNC? Can the companies sue? This is absolutely disgusting.

*** Update ***

Loser Atrios calls the ad ‘interesting’ and states that “the party could use a few more like him – we need to shore up our left flank a little bit – but that’s not the same thing as saying our party should be run by people like him.”

Heya Dave Neiwert- Why don’t you take a five minute break from claiming everyone in the GOP is either a fascist, a proto-fascist, a crypto-fascist, a fascist-enabler, tolerant of fascists, or indifferent to fascists, and examine some of the sick twerps in your little political hemisphere? How about a couple pages on the jerks that you no doubt embrace.

I think I am the angriest I have ever been at a political candidate and political party ever. These Democrats have NOTHING to talk about, except name-calling and rage. They stand around calling the President a miserable failure, calling all Republicans brownshirts, making one stupid accusation after another. How desperate are they- when the President flies to Iraq, serves chow to the troops, and for five seconds picks up the turkey centerpiece and states “I think I’ll take this one,” (or something to that effect), the Democrats talk about the turkey being a fraud for two weeks.

Meanwhile, standing in their midsts is the racist fraud Al Sharpton, who is responsible for ruining who knows how many lives, and not one Democrat is willing to say a bad thing about him. Can’t lose that 90% of the African American vote, now, can we?

Carol Moseley-Braun, an embezzler and fraud in her own right, not to mention a third rate intellect (yeah- Bush is the dumb one), is not only not laughed off stage, but they appear to take her seriously. Why no criticism of her sheer buffoonery? Guess we can’t lose the support of NOW.

Dennis Kucinich- well, I am not wasting any more of my breath on him.

Kerry- Kerry is disingenuous to the point that he makes Al Gore look candid and unscripted.

Oh- who cares. They are going to lose 45-48 states in the next election regardless of who they run. The fact that this is the face of the Democrat party is what is so sickening.

*** Update ***

‘Moderate’ Oliver asks in the comments section: “Does it really say anything that’s untrue?”

Oliver’s question does more to highlight the intellectual and moral bankruptcy of the Democratic party than anything I can possibly say. And, remember- Oliver is a ‘moderate,’ and not the ‘left flank’ that Atrios thinks needs shored up.

OK- Let’s try this on Oliver. The very first statement is a lie. The ban was put in place in 1991, but only recently was enforced because of litigation. Is that enough lies for you- the very first statement? Do I need to go on?

How about I just look at the big picture- the OVERALL IMPLICATION of the ad, which is that the only reason Bush went to war was to make his buddies rich, and therefore, has murdered these soldiers in the pursuit of profit.
Do you agree with those statements?

Jeebus Oliver- you are a nice guy, but you really need to get over your knee-jerk anti-Bush response and your lapdog attitude towards the DNC and everything Democrat. Independent thinking does not mean putting your own personal spin or creating your own innovative defense for everything the DNC and the loony left do or say.

*** Update ***

I was in the army for ten years, and all I can sit here and think is that if I had been killed and someone like Kucinich had used my name in a commercial like that I would haunt him for the rest of his life, which hopefully would be short and unpleasant. To think he would use my name, my rank, and my unit to disgrace me like that, to dishonor me and my service like that. I can’t think about this anymore. I am in a white rage.

*** Update #2 ***

Hi. My name is Oliver Willis, and we can add no-bid contracts, the military in general and the military policy regarding casualties, and Dick Cheney’s relationship to Halliburton to the long laundry list of things that I completely do not understand but have no problem talking about at great length.

My old advisor was right- a little bit of knowledge is worse than none at all.

*** Update #3 ***

Right on, Ricky.

*** Update #4 ***

I have calmed down some, and after some correspondence with someone, I agree that my language was wholly inappropriate throughout. Thus, there are ten or so fewer four letter words in this post than when it originally appeared. My apologies, andI will try not to become unhinged again any time soon.
