Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

Everybody saw this coming.

If you cannot answer whether trump lost the 2020 election, you are unfit for office.

The most dangerous place for a black man in America is in a white man’s imagination.

Giving in to doom is how we fail to fight for ourselves & one another.

The Giant Orange Man Baby is having a bad day.

A norm that restrains only one side really is not a norm – it is a trap.

Someone should tell Republicans that violence is the last refuge of the incompetent, or possibly the first.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

The “burn-it-down” people are good with that until they become part of the kindling.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

They think we are photo bombing their nice little lives.

They don’t have outfits that big. nor codpieces that small.

The low info voters probably won’t even notice or remember by their next lap around the goldfish bowl.

Wait, what?

Stamping your little feets and demanding that they see how important you are? Not working anymore.

Balloon Juice, where there is always someone who will say you’re doing it wrong.

“When somebody takes the time to draw up a playbook, they’re gonna use it.”

GOP baffled that ‘we don’t care if you die’ is not a winning slogan.

Keep the Immigrants and deport the fascists!

A tremendous foreign policy asset… to all of our adversaries.

Republicans firmly believe having an abortion is a very personal, very private decision between a woman and J.D. Vance.

I am not sure what to make of this post from Big Media Matt:

Now that Orson Scott Card says I’m unpatriotic, I guess it’s time to throw in the towel. Seriously, like all young nerd everywhere I loved Ender’s Game, but if you read the Ender prequel’s you’ll see that this is a man with all the insight into geopolitics of a really devoted Civ III player.

Here is Card’s statement:

“Am I saying that critics of the war aren’t patriotic? Not at all – I’m a critic of some aspects of the war. What I’m saying is that those who try to paint the bleakest, most anti-American, and most anti-Bush picture of the war, whose purpose is not criticism but deception in order to gain temporary political advantage, those people are indeed not patriotic. They have placed their own or their party’s political gain ahead of the national struggle to destroy the power base of the terrorists who attacked Americans abroad and on American soil.”

Is Matt saying that he is one of those who “try to paint the bleakest, most anti-American, and most anti-Bush picture of the war, whose purpose is not criticism but deception in order to gain temporary political advantage, those people are indeed not patriotic. They have placed their own or their party’s political gain ahead of the national struggle to destroy the power base of the terrorists who attacked Americans abroad and on American soil.”

What the hell is Yglesias talking about?

While Atrios might think that Tim Robbin’s newest play, ‘Embedded,’ is ‘obviously satirical,’ the value of such an effort is lost on me. In fact, I think it is pretty damn disgusting. A rundown:

But his play, “Embedded,” profiles the journalists who traveled with and reported on U.S. soldiers in Iraq and features the president’s war cabinet. It was written in Los Angeles and produced in Hollywood.

Robbins portrays journalists as Pentagon puppets, U.S. soldiers as thieves and killers of innocent women and children, and the Bush cabinet as war mongers willing to start a war to escape the negative publicity of the Enron scandal.

In production less than a month, the play received not one, but two glowing reviews from the Los Angeles Times. Robbins’ audience appears to accept his version of the war as the gospel truth.

“It is not propaganda. It is a voice of dissent, which is different than propaganda,” said audience member Kadina Dayal-Halday.

If this is dissent, color me a conformist. If this is right, I don’t mind being wrong. This play, from everything I have read about this venture, seems disrespectful, dishonest, and nothing more than agitprop for the A.N.S.W.E.R. crowd and their willing accomplices.

And to save you time in the comments, I am not saying Robbins and his friends are not patriotic- because we all know however asinine the dissent, it is patriotism! I am, however, calling Robbins an asshole. David Bloom, Michael Kelly, and the hundreds of thousands of soldiers you mock as ‘puppets’ have more character in their little fingers than exists in all of Robbins demented world. I guess the new definition of dissent includes calling everyone you disagree with stupid.

While the mainstream media is now finally addresssing the issue of Howard Dean’s sealed gubernatorial records, I was on the issue two months ago.

From today’s WaPo:

Howard Dean, facing criticism for going to unusual lengths to seal records of his governorship of Vermont, said Tuesday that he is unlikely to make a quick decision about whether to seek to open them before next year’s election.

“We’re talking about trying to be accommodating,” the Democratic presidential candidate told reporters. “We have no commitment to do anything other than what we’ve done right now.”

Dean negotiated a 10-year seal on many of the official papers from his 12-year governorship when he left office in January 2002. The seal lasts four years longer than that imposed by previous governors…

After Newsweek reported the seal this week, Dean said Monday on ABC’s “Good Morning America” that President Bush had done much the same thing by depositing the records of his Texas governorship in his father’s presidential library.

“I’ll unseal mine if he’ll unseal all of his,” Dean said.

All 2,100 boxes of Bush’s statehouse records were moved from the presidential library to the Texas State Library and Archives Commission in July 2002, according to a state archivist. Two months earlier, a Texas attorney general’s opinion had established that they were subject to the state’s open-records law.

Gillespie said records of Bush’s governorship “are available to the public . . . with limited exceptions.”

“I’m sure that when Dr. Dean learns that President Bush’s public papers as governor are now unsealed, he will be good to his word and unseal the papers of his governorship as well,” Gillespie said.

My comment back then is just as legitimate today:

I am not sure how to judge a candidate who wants to run on his record but is afraid to show it to the public. For the record, Bush did the same thing when he left office to run for 2000, was sued, and the records were released.

Why should Dean get a pass for things when George Bush would get hammered for it? Also, while Dean is currently surging- this is the Democratic primary season, a time when reality is suspended along with critical thinking skills, the historical record, and the laws of gravity- but will he one day be forced to respond to his more reckless statements? Statements such as this:

“The most interesting theory that I’ve heard so far – which is nothing more than a theory, it can’t be proved – is that he was warned ahead of time by the Saudis,” Dean told a caller to Washington, D.C’s Diane Rehm Show, according to a transcript obtained by Opinion Journal.com.

“Now, who knows what the real situation is?” the presidential conspiracy theorist cautioned. He then added, “But the trouble is, by suppressing that kind of information, you lead to those kinds of theories, whether they have any truth to them or not.”

Dean warned that the more theories like his “get repeated,” the more people tend to believe them. “So I think the president is taking a great risk by suppressing the key information that should go to the Kean commission” investigating the 9/11 attacks.

He may have couched his rhetoric in such a way so as to seem to not advocate this position, but merely by repeating it he is giving the theory credence. He knows what he is doing- throw something at the wall and see what sticks. I guess it is rather telling, though, that this is the sort of pandering Democrats have to do to get their party’s nomination. Kinda makes Republican ties to big business look downright admirable by comparison.

When Dean is straightforward and does not lapse inton full-on arrogant prick mode, he is pretty likeable. I have stated before that I think his draft issue is a non-issue, and I think the NY Times piece about it was a simple hit piece. I thought that this exchange on Hardball was downright refreshing:

MATTHEWS: Do you think, if you hadn

I’m with the Calpundit. This maneuver by the Dean campaign is clever, and I do wonder if this is the first time it has been done (at least this openly).

Good News for Bush

by John Cole|  December 3, 20038:04 am| 6 Comments

This post is in: Politics

If the Democrats in your life seem exceptionally surly this morning, cut them some slack. Life hasn’t been too easy for them. First, there is this news:

President Bush’s standing with the public has improved since his surprise Thanksgiving trip to Iraq amid signs of a stronger economy and following congressional passage of a prescription drug benefit under Medicare.

Bush’s job approval was at 61 percent in the National Annenberg Election Survey conducted the four days after the holiday, up from 56 percent during the four days before Thanksgiving. Disapproval of the president dropped from 41 percent to 36 percent, according to the poll released Tuesday.

If that were not bad enough, then they get hit with this nugget:

Ralph Nader has not yet decided whether to make another run for the White House, but he’s authorized a new exploratory committee to raise money for a potential bid.

The Nader 2004 Presidential Exploratory Committee was formed in late October as part of the consumer activist’s effort to gauge support for a run, said Theresa Amato, a committee director.

“He is using it to test the waters,” said Amato, who served as Nader’s national campaign manager when he ran for president on the Green Party ticket in 2000. She said the organization is part of Nader’s overall strategy of “talking to people, calling people, seeing what level of support there is.”

Cut ’em some slack, ok?

John Hawkins has his 2003 Warblogger Awards up, and once again, it was a clean sweep for Balloon Juice.

Nothing.

Zip.

Nada.

Zilch.

I did get five votes for Best Overall Blog, tying me for 14th place, so I would like to thank mom, dad, and my brother and sisters for those votes (*** Update *** This was just a joke- or supposed to be I really appreciate the fat that that many people voted for me, and I am actually quite surprised).

In other end of the year award news, Little Green Footballs is accepting nominations for the 2003 Fiskie:

How Did I Miss This?

Someone just needs to go slap the asshole editor at the New York Times who wrote this headline:

Iraq’s Shiites Insist on Democracy. Washington Cringes

Because it is really that simple, you see. Even a theocratic Shiite cleric wants democracy more than this administration. I can’t write anything else because I will use too many four letter words.
