Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

GOP baffled that ‘we don’t care if you die’ is not a winning slogan.

The arc of the moral universe does not bend itself. it is up to us to bend it.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

Not rolling over. fuck you, make me.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

Museums are not America’s attic for its racist shit.

It’s pointless to bring up problems that can only be solved with a time machine.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

The line between political reporting and fan fiction continues to blur.

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

They punch you in the face and then start crying because their fist hurts.

You would normally have to try pretty hard to self-incriminate this badly.

Anne Laurie is a fucking hero in so many ways. ~ Betty Cracker

Oh FFS you might as well trust a 6-year-old with a flamethrower.

We can show the world that autocracy can be defeated.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

If you cannot answer whether trump lost the 2020 election, you are unfit for office.

Republicans firmly believe having an abortion is a very personal, very private decision between a woman and J.D. Vance.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

Come on, media. you have one job. start doing it.

I Am Back

by John Cole|  November 12, 200312:32 pm| 14 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads

I am back, and I feel like I am up to about 85%. I still have a nasty cough, but it looks like I am going to survive. At any rate, the first question I have to ask everyone is “WHO THE HELL CARES WHAT TOM TOMORROW THINKS?” The Instapundit, LT. Smash, and Roger Simon have wasted entirely too much time on this jackass and the absurd little comic that upset so many people (BTW- I am a vet- can I write about whatever I want, Mr. Tomorrow?)

Two quick points about the petty cartoon:

1.) Go to a bar, restaurant, or any other crowded place that has a lot of adults. Walk around asking people if they have ever heard of Tom Tomorrow, and if they have, who he is. A quick note to Democrats, NEA members, and anti-school choice crowd- you might want to wear flip flops or sandals so your counting is not hindered in any way when you get to ten.

2.) This ‘chickenhawk’ blogger argument is just another example of loony left identity politics. I guess, according to this sort of thinking, no one should discuss telecommunications legislation unless they are in the field of telecommunications. No one should discuss abortion unless they are about to have an abortion or be aborted. No one should discuss rape unless they are a rapist or victim. Note to Tom Tomorrow- arguments stand or fall on their merits, not on who made them.

*** Update ***

Oliver Willis farts in public states:

Much like our president, vice-president and several other members of this administration, the warbloggers encourage using our military as some kind of toy to be trifled with, invading on whim when if they or their children were forced to serve they would likely be humming a whole ‘nother tune.

$5 dollars to the person who can figure out what the hell that means.

I woke up this morning and feel like I have finally turned the corner on this. I may need rehab for my new found robitussin addiction, though.

I am sick with the double whammy- strep throat and bronchitis, which means my tickets to the Steelers on the 50 yard line tomorrow are useless. I want to cry. I don’t know when I will post next.

A Real National Disgrace

by John Cole|  November 7, 200310:56 pm| 7 Comments

I feel like the Soviets must have felt like in 1980:

Now here’s a stunner: The defending champion U.S. baseball team will be at home next summer while countries like the Netherlands and Italy compete for an Olympic medal in Athens.

Manager Frank Robinson and his team of mostly minor leaguers were beaten at their own game, falling to Mexico 2-1 Friday — a loss that eliminated them from a qualifying tournament with no second chances.

I am really speechless.

Here Comes The New Meme

This post is in: Democratic Stupidity

Don’t worry about the Dems, though- even if the economy doesn’t work out in their favor for the elections next year, they will still create all sorts of absurd memes. Witness Oliver repeating the newly created ‘Bush doesn’t go to soldiers funerals’ meme, all the while shilling (‘He’s a General! And a Democrat!’) for Clark.

Here is the Volokh group discussing the issue in detail- although Oliver will surely dismiss it as nothing more than RNC ‘talkig points.’

In other news, none of the members of the Plame Brigade have yet to acknowledge the Democrat malfeasance involving the Senate Intelligence committee. At least Bob Kerrey and Zell Miller understand how awful the Democrat actions are– although it is nothing more than the process that the Democrats started with Leahy and the Senate Judiciary Committee.

More Bad News For Democrats

by John Cole|  November 7, 20034:54 pm| 29 Comments

Campaign 2004 already seems to be going down thetubes for the Donks:

The nation’s unemployment rate dropped to 6 percent in October as companies added thousands of new jobs for the third straight month, new evidence of an improving labor market.

The Labor Department reported Friday that payrolls grew by 126,000 last month, significantly more than the 50,000 new jobs that economists had predicted. That followed a revised 125,000 new jobs in September, which initially was reported at 57,000.

U.S. companies also added new jobs in August, marking three months of hiring gains following a six-month slump. October hiring occurred across a broad swath of the business landscape, including technical services, temporary employment firms, health care, social work, education and retail.

“We can finally put the nail in the coffin of the jobless recovery,” said Ken Mayland, president of ClearView Economics. “We are back on a rising job track.”

Another issue slips away.
