Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

One way or another, he’s a liar.

“Facilitate” is an active verb, not a weasel word.

Not rolling over. fuck you, make me.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

Donald Trump found guilty as fuck – May 30, 2024!

I did not have this on my fuck 2025 bingo card.

Shut up, hissy kitty!

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

When we show up, we win.

Wake up. Grow up. Get in the fight.

The republican caucus is covering themselves with something, and it is not glory.

They want us to be overwhelmed and exhausted. Focus. Resist. Oppose.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

Roe is not about choice. It is about freedom.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

No one could have predicted…

How stupid are these people?

Dear Washington Post, you are the darkness now.

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

Republicans want to make it harder to vote and easier for them to cheat.

Republicans do not trust women.

It is not hopeless, and we are not helpless.

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

An Honest Question

by John Cole|  May 18, 20043:59 pm| 23 Comments

This post is in: War

This is a serious question:

“Why can’t the discovery of sarin gas in artillery shells beconsidered proof of the existence of WMD?”

I will grant you, this is certainly not large arsenal, and if I had been asked whether I was willing to go to war over several clandestine artillery shells fill with chemical weapons, I would have answered no. However, that never was the only reason why war in Iraq was justified.

Regardless, I am not sure how you can state that this not proof that there were indeed unaccounted WMD, and who knows how many more there are…

Oliver’s Binary Construct

by John Cole|  May 18, 20043:49 pm| 13 Comments

This post is in: Democratic Stupidity

The other day, Brad DeLong wrote (via Mark Kleiman):

There is a certain kind of Berkeley professor who I am losing my tolerance for…

You know (or maybe you don’t): the kind who believes that your first duty is to sympathetically understand where people are coming from. Unless they’re Republicans. You have a duty to enter into the thought processes and sympathetically entertain the understanding of the world of a guy in Nigeria who as a picture of Osama bin Laden in his car, or a bureaucratic functionary working for Fidel Castro, or somebody who thinks that Bangladeshis should not be allowed to work in the textile industry. But Republicans? They are Blue Meanies. They are one dimensional. They are baaaaad.

And, of course, they appear to have no ironic consciousness of the huge disconnect in their intellectual stance at all. To say in one breath that we must not succumb to the temptation to turn those who express sympathy for Osama bin Laden into alien, hated, one-dimensional OTHERS; and then say in the next that those who express sympathy for Paul Wolfowitz are alien, hated, one-dimensional OTHERS…

The problem is, it isn’t just a few Berkely professors- it appears that this attitude is rampant in the mainstream left and right. Today, Oliver wrote the following:

According to the fundamentalist religious right, Armageddon was supposed to come knocking today because… some people got married.

Still waiting.

This type of hyperbole is rife among the mainstream of the Democratic party- if you oppose gay marriage, well, then you are just the same as John Derbyshire and this jackass.

Most people who oppose gay marriage, I am willing to bet, are not hate-mongering jack heels who think that armageddon will occur overnight. Most are probably quite reasonable, and probably just think that there is no reason to elevate same-sex union to the same level of a traditional marriage, some may have doubts about the necessity, some may have doubts about the implementation, others may have doubts about the long term effect this may have on marriage in general.

But hell- why not just villify your political opponents- it is so much easier than debating them.

*** Update **

I should probably point out that I am agnostic on the issue. I understand both sides of the argument. For the homosexual community, the simple fact isthat they simply love their partner and want what they perceive are they same rights as heterosexuals. For the other side, there are a number of misgivings, including religious beliefs, etc.

I would whole-heartedly support civil unions. I am tepidy indifferent about gay marriage, leaning in favor of it. So I guess since I am not all out in favor of gay marriage, I am a hatemongerer.

Lies and the Lying Liars

This post is in: Democratic Stupidity

In case you didn’t believe me when I stated this before, the Democrats will say ANYTHING to get Back in power:

he campaigns for President Bush and his likely Democratic opponent, Senator John Kerry, traded accusations today about who is more to blame for gasoline prices that have shot past $2 a gallon in many parts of the country.

“Where is the president?” Mr. Kerry asked in Portland, Ore., where he made a campaign stop at a training center. “We need a president who is fighting for the American worker, the American family, at the fuel pumps, to lower the price of gas in the United States.”

He and several other Democratic leaders accused the president today of breaking a campaign promise to try to control oil prices by pressuring oil-producing nations to increase production.

Several United States senators today called on the White House to release strategic oil reserves they say would help bring down the soaring price of gasoline.”

Let’s make sure we have the events in the correct chronological order:

First, the Democrats accused Bush of not using his close relationship with the Saudi’s to lower the price of oil.

Then, they intentionally mis-interpreted Woodward’s book and accused Bush and the Saudi’s of manipulating the oil market to lower prices to help Bush get elected.

In 2000, Kerry was against tapping the strategic oil reserve.

Today, he is in favor of it.

Liars.

Things that make you go hrmm:

Transexuals will be able to compete at the Olympics if they have had appropriate surgery and are legally recognised as members of their new sex, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) said today.

The rule will cover both male-to-female and female-to-male cases and will be in place before the Athens Games in August.

The IOC’s medical commission drew up a list of criteria and said transexual athletes could compete, providing:-

“Surgical anatomical changes have been completed, including external genitalia changes and gonadectomy.

“Legal recognition of their assigned sex has been conferred by the appropriate official authorities.

“Hormonal therapy appropriate for the assigned sex has been administered in a verifiable manner and for a sufficient length of time to minimise gender-related advantages in sport competition.”

Insert your own crude pole vault joke.

Jeff is demanding respect. I offer this in tribute:

I’m the Urban Spaceman, baby,
I’ve got speed.
I’ve got everything I need.
I’m the Urban Spaceman, baby,
I can fly.
I’m a supersonic guy.

I don’t need pleasure,
I don’t feel pain.
If you were to knock me down,
I’d just get up again.
I’m the Urban Spaceman, baby,
I’m making out
I’m all about

I wake up every morning with a smile upon my face.
My natural exuberance spills out all over the place.

I’m the Urban Spaceman,
I’m intelligent and clean.
Know what I mean?
I’m the Urban Spaceman,
As a lover, second to none.
It’s a lot of fun.

I never let my friends down,
I’ve never made a boob.
I’m a glossy magazine, an advert in the tube.
I’m the Urban Spaceman, baby, here comes the twist.
I don’t exist.

A Neat Trick

by John Cole|  May 10, 20041:25 pm| 26 Comments

This post is in: Media

The only possible way to make Michael Eisner look alright in my eyes is the jaded hacks at the NY Times:

To the Editor:

You accuse the Walt Disney Company of cowardice and censorship because of its decision a year ago not to distribute Michael Moore’s film “Fahrenheit 9/11” (editorial, May 6). In fact, the cowardly thing would have been to be intimidated into distributing the film. We did not block its distribution. There are many avenues for Mr. Moore to pursue to get his film distributed.

Your accusations of stifling free expression are misplaced. The First Amendment does not say that The New York Times must print every article presented to it or that the Walt Disney Company must distribute every movie. If a government entity had blocked Mr. Moore’s film from being released, that would have violated the First Amendment, and we would have quickly signed up to join any protest.

In the case of “Fahrenheit 9/11,” we chose a path that was right for the company and its stakeholders.

The creation of intellectual product rises and falls on similar judgments by creative people and executives across America. We would hope that The Times would recognize that the Walt Disney Company has the same right of freedom of expression that it is advocating for Mr. Moore.

MICHAEL D. EISNER
Chief Exec., Walt Disney Company
Burbank, Calif., May 7, 2004

It appears like they are almost actively trying to get stories wrong.
