Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Trump should be leading, not lying.

These are not very smart people, and things got out of hand.

“The defense has a certain level of trust in defendant that the government does not.”

So very ready.

There are times when telling just part of the truth is effectively a lie.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

I’m starting to think Jesus may have made a mistake saving people with no questions asked.

The Supreme Court cannot be allowed to become the ultimate, unaccountable arbiter of everything.

He seems like a smart guy, but JFC, what a dick!

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

There are consequences to being an arrogant, sullen prick.

“But what about the lurkers?”

Of course you can have champagne before noon. That’s why orange juice was invented.

Lick the third rail, it tastes like chocolate!

Stamping your little feets and demanding that they see how important you are? Not working anymore.

Consistently wrong since 2002

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

The rest of the comments were smacking Boebert like she was a piñata.

I would try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

It’s pointless to bring up problems that can only be solved with a time machine.

One way or another, he’s a liar.

At some point, the ability to learn is a factor of character, not IQ.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

Fighting Dems?

by Tim F|  December 28, 200510:00 pm| 243 Comments

This post is in: Politics

A month or so back I remarked to John that there seemed like a large number of Iraq vets running as Democrats these days, an observation that came largely from Kos’s efforts in pointing them out. John asked how many Republicans there were, and since I didn’t know we both shrugged our shoulders and moved on. The question matters because as everybody knows both sides are recruiting desperately for 2006, and the side which troops choose says any number of things about the mindset of the actual grunts prosecuting this war. A gross imbalance, depending on which side it fell, would be either a slap in the face of the yellow-ribbon-on-an-SUV crowd or else a vindication of their smug self-superiority.

Today Kos provides hard numbers on both sides: the Democrats have recruited thirty-six Iraq veterans, according to this article. Depending on whether you count Iraq veterans or all veterans, about which there seems to be some confusion, Kos asserts that the Republicans have recruited either one or two. Kos does not support the claim, so don’t be 100% eager to take it for granted.

I will watch the fallout of this particular windfall with interest. Paul Hackett nearly upset the most conservative county in Ohio, and unless Bush gains the ability to heal the sick through your television set whatever bounce Hackett got from Bush fatigue will be ten times more severe by 2006.

So what will the GOP do? Swiftboating seems likely. I’m eager to find out whether they have the cajones cojones to try it thirty-six times.

Pet Blogging

Some quick pics of the family pets. First up, the greatest Jack Russell Terrier in the world:

Russell is giving me dirty looks, trying to get me to play with the football behind him. He isn’t the most photogenic dog to ever walk the earth, but we love him anyway and he is much more handsome in person.

Sid, my sister’s 20+lb polydactyl, sleeping in my dirty clothes basket. That is a full sized basket, to give you an idea how big that damned cat is.

I will post Speak and Whisper, my brother’s cats, tomorrow.

This, via Radley Balko, is the most evil thing I have ever seen.

There is a special place in hell for ‘friends’ like this. I can’t even file this under humor, it is so wrong.

Pandora Speaks

My Pandora station for the Red Hot Chili Peppers is currently playing Splender-I Don’t Understand, and this is why:

Base on what you’ve told us so far, we’re playing this trach because it features a subtle use of vocal harmony, myld rhythmic syncopation, repetitive melodic phrasing, and many other similarities identified in the music genome project.

Simply amazing.

The NY Times champions the cause of chemical plant security, something I thought had already been addressed (apparently not), and while the whole thing was a little surprising, this paragraph stuck out the most:

If terrorists attacked a chemical plant, the death toll could be enormous. A single breached chlorine tank could, according to the Department of Homeland Security, lead to 17,500 deaths, 10,000 severe injuries and 100,000 hospitalizations. Many chemical plants have shockingly little security to defend against such attacks.

After 9/11, there were immediate calls for the government to impose new security requirements on these plants. But the chemical industry, which contributes heavily to political campaigns, has used its influence in Washington to block these efforts. Senator Collins, the chairwoman of the Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, has held hearings on chemical plant security, and has now come up with this bill with both Republican and Democratic sponsors.

The bill requires chemical plants to conduct vulnerability assessments and develop security and emergency response plans. The Department of Homeland Security would be required to develop performance standards for chemical plant security. In extreme cases, plants that do not meet the standards could be shut down.

They haven’t done vulnerability assessments or developed response plans yet? This goes beyond government responsibility- how have they managed to continue without their insurers making sure this was taken care of. Or their investors? Or what about action by the local communities which would be affected by Bhopal-like clouds of gas covering the area?

More Rhetoric on the Abortion Front

by John Cole|  December 28, 200511:32 am| 41 Comments

This post is in: Politics

This will no doubt inflame the passions of the intended audience:

God sees embryos as “full and complete” humans, Pope Benedict said on Wednesday in an address that firmly underlined the Roman Catholic Church’s stance against abortion and scientific research on embryos.

“The loving eyes of God look on the human being, considered full and complete at its beginning,” Benedict said in his weekly address to the faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square.

Quoting Psalm 139, Benedict said the Bible teaches that God already recognises the embryo as a complete human. That view is the basis for the Church teaching that aborting or manipulating these embryos amounts to murder.

In Psalm 139, the psalmist says to God: “Thou didst see my limbs unformed in the womb, and in thy book they are all recorded.”

“It is extremely powerful, the idea in this psalm, that in this ‘unformed’ embryo God already sees the whole future,” Benedict said.

“In the Lord’s book of life, the days that this creature will live and will fill with works during his time on earth are already written.”

Benedict has already weighed into an Italian debate on abortion ahead of a general election in April, publicly supporting a pro-life group that right-wing Health Minister Francesco Storace wants to have access to counselling centres advising women seeking to terminate pregnancy.

No doubt it will have the desired effect. More here.

It Is Tough Being Hillary

by John Cole|  December 28, 200510:50 am| 54 Comments

Actually, it really isn’t- most politicians would pay to have this kind of opposition:

Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton’s support for the war in Iraq has outraged many liberal activists in the Democratic Party, who are warning of retribution, including a primary challenge to her re-election campaign next year.

Some liberal activists are angry over Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton’s stand on the Iraq war, and are supporting a 2006 primary challenger.
But the activists are in the same sort of political bind that liberals found themselves in a decade ago when Bill Clinton defied liberal orthodoxies: struggling to bring meaningful pressure to bear on a politician who is cherished by many traditional Democrats.

The frustration on the left toward Mrs. Clinton, the junior senator from New York, has been building for months, particularly as opinion has turned against the war and some Democrats in Congress have begun to pressure President Bush to begin a withdrawal of American troops.

Recently, the anger erupted into public view, with antiwar activists publicly protesting against the senator and, perhaps more significantly, an antiwar candidate emerging to challenge her in the Democratic primary next year.

That challenger, Jonathan Tasini, a longtime labor advocate, has the support of Cindy Sheehan, the antiwar protester who lost her son in the war and who camped for weeks outside Mr. Bush’s Texas ranch, demanding to meet with him. Mrs. Sheehan has been critical of Mrs. Clinton.

I can see how Clinton infuriates some on the hard left (hell- her video game crap and the support for flag-burning legislation annoys me to no end), but these kinds of attacks on Clinton only make her more palatable to the majority of the public.
