The Fag Hag

So Ann Coulter lives up to her standards and calls John Edwards a faggot at CPAC:

Democratic Party boss Howard Dean demanded that Republican presidential candidates denounce conservative columnist Ann Coulter after she referred to Democratic presidential hopeful John Edwards as a “faggot” during a speech Friday at a national conservative gathering.

Coulter, who was addressing the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington, D.C., said:

“I was going to have a few comments on the other Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, but it turns out you have to go into rehab if you use the word “faggot,” so I — so kind of an impasse, can’t really talk about Edwards.”

Members of the audience seemed startled, then many clapped, and she proceeded to open the floor to questions, reported EditorandPublisher.com

After her comments, Dean issued a press release expressing his outrage. Dean called Coulter’s remarks “hate-filled and bigoted.”

It appears that this is being pretty widely condemned by bloggers of all political affiliations, which would seem to be a no-brainer. Not only is it offensive and bigoted, but politically dangerous. I do have to remark that it is not surprising she said this- these types of attacks have been par for the course as long as Edwards has been a candidate. What the hell is ‘the Breck Girl’ if not an implied attack on Edwards’ maculinity? For the record, I don’t think anyone of the candidates attending CPAC should have to apologize for her remarks, and I think Howard Dean is just milking this for as much mileage as he can get. I am betting they probably will, though, and will probably not agree to appear there again with Coulter.

In other news, I am wondering where the fuck we would stand in this shitty study.

    Excellent title John.
Of course we’ve come to expect nothing less from the Attention Starved mAnnequin from the 7th Ring, so it always pains me when officials bother to respond to her crap by calling it hateful. Yes, and water is wet, fire is hot. I also have to wonder about politians who will voluntarily be seen in the same room with her, much less share a podium. What next, golf trips with David Duke?

In other news, I am wondering where the fuck we would stand in this shitty study.

Well, that’s easy enough: 1,170 pages containing one or more of the deadly words, out of 4,070 total, for an average of 29%. I wonder how quickly that could be brought up to, say, 50%?

Given the rampant coprophrasia manifested on this site in the posts, such as this one by Mr. Cole, as well as by the commenters, I rather suspect Balloon Juice would score very high indeed, perhaps even winning the competition. The Gilles de la Tourette’s syndrome sufferers, such as ThymeZone, would drive the BJ numbers quite high.

Bravo to the blogs who decried Coulter’s remarks!

Now, lets here from some of the Republican national leadership that were also in attendance…waiting…waiting…

And now, pray tell, what will the blogs apologize for the next time she is a prominent and popular speaker at a conservative national convention? Or the next? Or the next?

The woman is a reprehensible, vile example of rightwing garbage but she is repeatedly and popularly hired to speak at these national functions.

Until that changes all apologies are bullshit.

Sure, she was widely condemned by more reasonable right wingers like Captain Ed and Allahpundit at hotair.

But let’s take a trip on the crazy train.

You seem to have forgotten the wackjobs at RedState, where the commenters tried to:

    1. Claim it was a reference to a Grey’s Anatomy actor and anyone who didn’t get that was stupid:

She uses this reference frequently it’s a reference to Isaiah Washington and rampant ridiculous PC liberalism.

This is typical of liberal’s criticism of Ann; they’re usually 3 steps behind her mind!

    2. Said that her “inflection” made it clear she wasn’t calling Edwards a faggot:

You have to hear her voice inflection for it to be clear she was being facetious about Washington. Implying if you have to go to rehab for using the word ‘faggot’, just think what they’d do to her given what she’d be likely to say about Edwards. It was classic Coulter… and it sure was not calling Edwards a ‘faggot’.

    3. Infamous RedState psychopath Tbone dropped this wisdom bomb:

Annie is HOT! I have now asserted my inalienable right to insult who I wish and endorse who I wish. Try not to be so self-righteous. That is the most liberal trait not to emulate.

    4. Blamed it on the PC police, highlighted by this little exchange:
    Liberal:

Do you believe the word faggot is acceptible?

    RedStater:

Yes I find it acceptable. What I find unacceptable is small groups being able to impinge upon everyones freedom of speech.

And just who on this earth do you think you are to tell anyone what is or is not acceptable ?

    5. Began down the path of “its not really a bad word, anyway”

Where you’re from, faggot may be the worst name they’re called. Where I’m from, it’s one of the best. No it’s not nice, but don’t be thinking that the vast majority of the people living out here in flyover country consider it a cuss word.

    6. Took #5 all the way to “its not even a gay slur anymore” citing urbandictionary, which I’m kind of surprised somebody at RS has even heard of.

Check out urbandictionary.com’s definition of faggot:

“In these times not really used if somebody is really a homosexual mostly used instead of calling somebody stupid or a loser.”

So this word continues to evolve from contemptible woman to homosexual to stupid/loser.

We don’t know for sure if it was meant as a gay slur at all, do we?

    7. And, finally, compared Coulter to… founding fathers?

Ann serves a purpose. We need her. Rhetoric serves a purpose. It’s as old as the day is long – Think Samuel Adams, John Hancock, Paul Revere, Thomas Paine, Nathan Hale, Patrick Henry etc… Great rhetoriticians and firebrands all

    Awesome.

The reaction over at the Corner is mixed. K-Lop is doing her best to spin the comment as well as a few others.

Here is my problem. Ann has been the queen of intolerance for years (from genocide of Muslims to the assassination of Clinton) why does she get a pass from Republicans? Why was she invited in the first place?

McCain is looking pretty smart right now.

BarneyG2000 beat me to it–CPAC should apologize for inviting her in the first place. But then again, Fox should apologize for putting her on TV, newspapers should apologize for syndicating her ‘column’, Random House should apologize for publishing her, etc., etc. That is, if they had any decency whatsoever–of course, they ceded that when they gave her a platform for her consistently hateful and insane rantings and ravings.

    John,
What comes around goes around. Republicans are always asking for Dems to condemn the remarks of other liberals. Recall the conservative firestorm over remarks made by John Kerry about “getting stuck in Iraq.” First, the outrage monkeys purposefully misrepresented the meaning of that remark, condemned Kerry for attacking the troops, and then called on other Dems to distance themselves from Kerry.

I don’t blame Howard Dean for milking the Coulter remarks for all they’re worth. Coulter’s remarks were clearly over the top and had nothing to do with criticisms of Edwards’ policies and everything to do with emasculating Edwards in front of a conservative audience.

Conservatives routinely invite Ann Coulter to speak at these events. They know that Coulter will say vile things. Those who invited her ought to criticize her for it.

Puzzling. Puzzling to me why the right attaches itself to the Coulters and the Limbaughs when they are so clearly just self-interested trash entrepreneurs who are using their audiences to make money for themselves.

Of course, also puzzling to me why you guys either (a) permit the trash Darrell to post here, or (b) create him as a theatrical device. Either way, the effect here is roughly the same as inviting Coulter to speak at your function. Isn’t it?

Are you kidding? (S)he is the poster child for the anti-PC idiots (‘she says what we’re all really thinking’). She’s there just to say something that they can make fun of liberals for being offended by.

Conservatives routinely invite Ann Coulter to speak at these events. They know that Coulter will say vile things. Those who invited her ought to criticize her for it.

Except that they invite her so she’ll say those things.
It doesn’t matter what he says so long as its something the left wouldn’t like. If the left gets offended it just proves their a bunch of liberal PC faggots and no one wants to be see as a liberal PC faggot right? So you identify with the right. Then you become a staunch republican meaning you will follow and vote for the guy with the R next to his name. Now that you’ve shown that you’ll vote R without even caring what the polititian has to say don’t be surprised when they stop taling to you (not that you’d notice though).

The good old Inalienable Right. Will Coulter lose her prestigious speaking spots on FOX or any other major network? Nope. CPAC will have her right back next year. In the near future Glenn Beck will have her on his Headline News spot commiserating about how cruel life can be to conservatives who have the nerve to speak their mind.

Then Beck will launch into a spittle-flecked tirade against Obama for some misinterpreted comment.

Just another example of the left having no sense of humor. The pearl clutching over Ann’s joke about PC speech is amusing to those of us who get it. But the hypersensitive comically challenged wackjob left definitely don’t get it. The condemnations from the right (giggle) are mostly for show. We all know that the fainting couch reaction is almost as funny as Ann’s intelligent and stinging barbs.

There’s a bit of a double standard here (nothing new to the far left which eats cognitive dissonance for breakfast, lunch and dinner). If being gay is not a bad thing, if it’s a perfectly normal lifestyle choice, then why get the panties in a bunch over Ann’s tongue in cheek statement? I’ll let outraged homophobic liberals sort that out for themselves.

Another recent example of humor impaired lefties is the dustup between the feministe blog and Sadly No (a low brow liberal “humor” site).

Sadly No photoshopped a picture of a huge sub sandwich into the hands of a slightly heavy right winger (Daffydd ab Hugh) they did not like. It was actually kind of funny, although the sub sandwich had nothing to do with why Sadly No doesn’t like the guy. There were complaints from a fatty blogger so Sadly No corrected their picture by photoshopping in a huge celery thinking this more PC version would make things all better.

Feministe got all upset about how Sadly No was insulting all fat people by posting this mean picture. More recently, Sadly No posted this comment about the CPAC joke “Above: Coulter’s appearance nothing like that of unskilled drag queen.” Naturally feministe went ballistic.

The PC wackjobs on the left have no sense of humor. They can’t even tolerate minor humerous transgressions from their own side. PC purity is required by all. I love it!

I think I’ll pop some popcorn and make myself a large sub sandwich.

DNC Chair Howard Dean denounced Ann Coulter, suggesting there was no room in politics for such “vile rhetoric,” except perhaps from the people who work in the kitchens of those swanky hotels.

Meanwhile, Barack Obama said he wouldn’t allow campaign politics to get in the way of his defending Edwards, stating, “John Edwards is not gay, though he did look at me sort of funny once in a Senate chamber men’s room. I am aware of the rumors surrounding Hillary over the years, not that I believe them, but I’ve never heard a thing about John. I’m outraged that the shameless liberal media has refused to cover Ann’s eye-opening remarks at CPAC last night.

Why does the liberal media hate free speech? Clearly Ann’s just saying what many people are thinking. Squashing the truth and free speech can explain why she believes the Times building should explode and disintegrate into a pile of rubble. Can you blame her?

We can’t rest until we re-install the Fairness Doctrine and end the media consolidation that liberals forced on us during the Telecommunications act of 1996. That will stop the liberal bias.

Given the state of conservative discourse these days, it is incredibly difficult to determine if this is parody or not. But if it’s not, allow me to give you a civics lesson: “free speech” is only illegally suppressed by the government. If a news outfit fails to report something you said, or your employer fires your ass because you said something very publically which embarasses them, etc, there is nothing illegal about it.

Romney hyping up Coulter before she came on. This isn’t an isolated incident either, she has a history of calling people homosexual in various demeaning ways, and she had an incident like this last year at the SAME event and was invited back as the featured speaker! How in the world does Romney get a pass on this? He positively endorsed what she said

The reason Dean is hyping it is because it’s actually a real thing. There may be some people being unfairly tarnished with this but there certainly is one candidate who deserves it

Maybe it would have been more PC if Ann called Johnny “Silky Pony.”

And Ann obviously didn’t call Breck a “faggot.” She was referring to the Gray’s Anatomy guy who went into rehab for calling a co-star the naughty name.

She was suggesting that she didn’t have nice things to say about the guy and that it would be safer to keep her criticisms to herself lest she be sent to rehab. A PC police joke that the PC police cannot even fathom since they are conditioned not to think before jerking the knee.

The PC police see the word “faggot” and immediately puff up and blush and scream and wet themselves. Fuck em if they can’t take a joke.

What was the first thing Edwards’ campaign did? According to Marcotte’s blog (his former Blogger who is more foul mouthed than the dreaded Ann Coulter), Pandagon, the campaign immediately attempted to raise $100,000 in “Coulter Cash.” Milk that cash cow!

What was the first thing Edwards’ campaign did? According to Marcotte’s blog (his former Blogger who is more foul mouthed than the dreaded Ann Coulter), Pandagon, the campaign immediately attempted to raise $100,000 in “Coulter Cash.” Milk that cash cow!

    that is some good spoofin’.

That is definitely a shitty study. The results don’t surprise me, nor does the fact that the methodology is horrible. The thing is, just for starters, counting the “number of pages” where something appears on a site–and then blindly comparing it to another site–is at best totally useless and at worst fundamentally intellectually bankrupt. Because, guess what, Daily Kos has a lot of pages. And then there’s the “User Comments” factor–a lot of right-wing blogs don’t even have User Comments in the first place (and of course some others are heavily moderated or censored, which I don’t necessarily see as a plus). And then there’s the fact that George Carlin’s ‘seven words’ was a comedy skit, representative of nothing–he pulled the words out of thin air. Some of them are generally considered to be very offensive, and some of them aren’t (‘tits’?)–and that varies culturally, as well. I could probably go on, but what the fuck would be the point.

However, if we’re going to continue with such idiocy, then I’d like to see a study that compares death threats or threats of violence towards particular people or groups on right-wing vs. left-wing blogs. Or, for that matter, amongst pundits and media figures, too! Paging Ann Coulter, anyone?

A pertinent quote from a 1995 Mother Jones profile of Rush Limbaugh, by Molly Ivins:

I have a correspondent named Irwin Wingo in Weatherford, Texas. Irwin and some of the leading men of the town are in the habit of meeting about 10 every morning at the Chat’n’Chew Cafe to drink coffee and discuss the state of the world. One of their members is a dittohead, a Limbaugh listener. He came in one day, plopped himself down, and said, “I think Rush is right. Racism in this country is dead. I don’t know what the niggers will find to gripe about now.”

If you invite Andrew Dice Clay to speak at your event, you know you’re going to get racist remarks. If you invite Mel Gibson, you don’t get to act shocked when he starts babbling about Jewish conspiracies. By appearing at an event where Coulter is a prominently featured speaker, CPAC and the candidates were implicitly endorsing her hate agenda. So of course they should denounce her remarks, and for being there in the first place when they knew exactly what she would do, and make a commitment to sever themselves from her and her insane politics of hate.

I can take a joke and I will laugh at un-PC comments but to actually try to defend Coulter’s speech as part of the “stinging wit” against the PC police is a sad statement. I have reacted to her comments the same way I would react to anyone else who steps over the line whether it is calling Bush a Hitler, saying that we would be better off if Cheney would have died in the suicide bombing or calling Obama “Obama bin Laden…”

There is a line of good taste and a line in which rhetoric becomes simple hate speech… Coulter knows what this line is and steps over it when she knows she will get the coverage she needs to advance her self interests…

she knows, as well as anyone else does, that when she crosses that line she will get the news coverage she believes she deserves and if the heat becomes too much she will just claim that her Free Speech is being attacked… but it isn’t Free Speech that is the question and it never has been… it is being personally responsible for the remarks that she makes and facing the consequences for making them… but much like other people on the “personal responsibility” side of the debate, it is the actions of other people rather than their own actions that cause the problem.

Ann Coulter isn’t worth the newsprint and has become a comical farce of a pundit. She no longer speaks with a conviction but one that wants the attention. In other words, she is the political version of Paris Hilton–better known as an attention whore. The only difference between the two is that Paris Hilton does far more interesting things with her mouth than Coulter…

    R23,
Don’t get the idea I was supporting your views, if you think Coulter and her like are funny you have an odd idea of funny. My point was and is still, that AC doesn’t have anything going for her other than outre comments and organizations that depend on such are reflective of that lack of intelligence. (Wit actually involves an odd twist upon intelligent discourse)

…the hypersensitive comically challenged wackjob left…

Calling someone a “faggot”, now that’s just roll-on-the-floor funny, isn’t it? Right-wing humor is always hilarious like that.

Take Fox News’ new right-wing comedy gem, “The Half Hour News Hour”, for example. It even features the hilarious hijinx of Ann Coulter herself, as well as the man of a million laughs, Rush Limbaugh. Ann’s big punchline from this week’s show? After being appointed acting president by Limbaugh, she picks up the phone and says, “Pentagon, this is acting-president, Ann Coulter. What countries haven’t we invaded yet?”. Thought I was gonna die.

Please Fox, leave the comedy to the liberals. They then follow that bomb up with, “Red Eye”, which is targeted at the young, hip right-winger. It has to be the worst program aired in the history of television. No really, it’s that bad.

Glenn Greenwald over at Salon summed it up best when he said that Coulter will be speaking again at events like this because it is her and her ilk that are now the face of the current republican party. She is the result of all the racism, sexism, xenophobia and religious intollerance the right has tried to keep hidden for so many years. Rather than it going away as they had hoped it festered and grew while quietly being nurtured as “the base”.

As for what she said, I hereby reserve the right to be as shrill as I want when saying she looks like she was used as the pivot point for a bulldozer.
